This is not a new idea. You can thank Colt for smart gun technology back during the Clinton years. That is when Colt was going through their "Screw the commercial public in favor of government contracts" phase.

I wonder how hard it would be to remove or bypass the electronics, it took al of three hours for the public to figure out how to remove the S&W lock from the new guns and a week or two to figure out how to plug the hole.

Just what California needs...more "safety" oriented technology they can cite and then legislate and cram down our throats.

This is ridiculous...
"The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399"
Uh huh... I can't wait to get this little .22....
There are so many reasons this is a bad idea I don't know where to start.

I NEED ONE!
Any gun that is smarter than the politicians who passed the rules on CA guns belongs in my collection! When the price gets down to under $99.00, it will be added. Does it come in colors?

Daylight Savings Time
When you have to change for daylight savings time, does the gun fire an hour after you pull the trigger?
It will bring new meaning to "Watch" this shot!

If I were mayor of city in California, and could get a good deal on the guns in 9mm, 40mm, and 45 caliber, I would make the purchase for my police department and make it a choice for the officers. Having a weapon like that beats hell out losing your weapon in a tussel with bad guys and having them use on you! Smart guns? Good idea, IMO. When you return home and some burgler has your gun, well, he may beat hell out of you with it but he sure as heck is not going to shoot you or your family. Just my 2-cents.

I imagine that these smart guns will be hardily embraced by the California street gangs.
Once the Crips have fully adopted and are in full compliance with all of the existing CA gun laws... it will be only a matter of days before the Bloods fall in line.
I wonder how they'll rap rhyme with "Armatix GmbH".... seeing as Glock has so many wonderful rhyming alternatives.

Does it come with a little set of jumper cables to use in case the battery dies?

Even if the battery never died and everything operated exactly how it is designed to, you still have to enter a code before the unit will activate and the gun can be fired. I suppose that wouldn't be a problem as long as the bad guy is patient.

Could be bad news for a lot of us.
Smart guns could transform firearms industry - Nation - The Boston Globe
Quote:
Lawmakers around the country have been intrigued by the possibilities. New Jersey passed a hotly contested law in 2002 requiring that only smart guns be sold in the state within three years of a smart gun being sold anywhere in the country. A similar measure made it through the California Senate last year, and at the federal level, Representative John Tierney, Democrat of Massachusetts, has also introduced a mandate.

SOAP BOX ALERT
I just recently retired from the second largest Police Department in the US, first in California (figure that one out) after 33 years.
When I was 21, I made that Department and the NYPD, settling in on the West Coast one.
I moved to one of the nicest places in the US. Southern California in the 80s.
We had a great Governor, we were conservative, we had great gun shows and no real gun laws to speak of.
Over the last 33 years I've watched the economy here take a dump, companies run screaming from the bus and average people lose their homes. I've watched crime see saw and a loud minority win every battle in political races.
Recently, my wife, who works for a major Pharma company has been given the opportunity to move up to corporate. That move will be to Indianapolis. She came to me with that face, you guys know it, the I really want to do this face but it's up to you. Like we actually have a say in that one!
So it looks like I will be moving some time soon.
All that said, the big Metro areas, NY, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles (oops did I mention the city?) have no choice but to screw the pooch for the "average joe".
I genuinely feel bad for the Californians that have to stay, it was an amazing place but things change, change with them.
As for the Weapon. I am positive it will fail, the technology is flawed, we tested it. Tactically it's a nightmare. We had more success with the 1911 due to the fact it had multiple safeties.
Mike

I'm on the same page as Mike (don't know him, but I'm thinking we have a few friends in common). I too worked for a large agency in California. Not quite as large and farther to the south. San Diego was a wonderful spot when I first moved there for school and then the first part of my LE career. It was a conservative place, with the military and retired military still the overwhelming majority.
That quickly changed and it went downhill. It turned into one big socialism experiment, the value of the dollar literally went the way of the peso and I was giving close to 40% back in taxes when it was all said and done. It bothered me enough, and I was fortunate to be in a position in life that allowed change, that I packed my bags and returned to Alaska. It was a tough decision since I was already on the downhill slide to retirement and had a great job. Transferring nothing earned other than experience, I started over and it was worth it. Still visit to see old friends, but I'm quickly reminded each time that I made the right decision.
I hope with this smart gun idea, that nobody buys one single piece and the idea fails. I'm certain it will, but just the thought that it's the way we as Americans are going, is bad enough.

Wow, you guys are incredible. Back in the 1800's, you would have been the shooters complaining about those complicated, darn, pesky revolvers and repeating rifles. In WW1, I can visualize you guys refusing to use that funny looking, non-revolver thingie the 1911 Browning. In WW2, it would have been complaints about your trusty bolt action rifle being replaced by something called the Garand: "No bolt! Not me! No sir!". 357 magnum?! Naw, just a gussied up .38, forget it. M14?! Naw, it's too heavy! M16?! Boy, I really like this one! It's not heavy, you don't need to clean it so much and, uh, hold on a moment, it seems to have jammed. Uh-h-h-h, I better fix this because Charley's about to bayonet me. Where's that M14?!!!!

Did y'all think that maybe the high prices for the set up--is a great marketing tool to keep people from buying them? Just sayin.

Son I sincerely hope Maryland restricts you to nothing but those Smart guns that you seem to so willingly endorse for everyone else. Not everyone in Maryland, just you.

You can also be sure as heck you won't be able to use it when you wake up in the middle of the night. Me - I don't have a use for an $1800 rock.

I like technology as much as most guys, but it's about reliability for me when you combine electronics and guns (or gun safes).
If my laptop crashes and give me the "Blue Screen of Death" that's a whole different matter.

Every time you press that laser button on your rifle or handgun, that's computer technology at work. Everytime you turn that gun light on, that's modern technology at work helping you find the bad guy in the dark. New, faster, better scopes? All designed by computers. Progress is a train that waits for no-one, not even shooters. By the way, I'm a Vietnam vet.

I'm okay when the flashlight doesn't work because the batteries went dead, but there's a definite list of things that should work even if every battery you own died - guns, knives, toilets, ...

There are no lasers nor lights on any of my guns.
Thank you for your service but I don't agree with your thinking on this topic.

I don't know why you keep comparing apples to oranges. Lasers, optics, lights are auxiliary systems that may enhance the functioning of your gun, having an electronic lock messes up with basic crucial functionality. Having malfunctioning laser is not the same as having malfunctioning electronic lock.

While those things may be nice to have they are accessories that are removable for when they break, and are not necessary for the weapon to function properly. There are a few target guns that use electronic triggers but they are for playing games and not defence weapons, and there was a muzzle-loading hunting rifle with electronic ignition and Remington eTronix tried it, they went the way of the DoDo bird.

I dunno, it might be a good idea to buy one.
A year from now it'll be considered a rare collector's item.

Have any of u guys seen those things they call smart cars. Well i've seen a few of them have stupid accidents. All because of the person who was operating them.
Its just amazing how things like this work. A smart car that still isnt smart enough to avoid an accident.
Oh look a smart pistol......Oh great now my pistol can be tracked due to this little smart chip inside it.

There's a name for this. Saw something on a plane crash & a theory is that planes are becoming so automated that pilots are forgetting how to fly.

Cool. We're disagreeing, not being disagreeable.

In a pitch black room that laser is your electronic lock (on to the target). Until the locks fail, you have nothing but an unproven theory that may or may not ever become fact.

Okay, okay. Then why did they crash prior to automated systems?

Unfortunately it also works both ways.... if there is any dust or other particulate matter in the air (like gunsmoke) that laser beam points right back to you.

You only have to enter the code once to "mate" the watch to the gun.. After that the gun will fire if they are close. Not sure how close. I wear my watch on my left arm and shoot right handed. Is that close enough????
