Ruger No. 1 Question
Anyone have a Ruger No. 1 Varminter in .257 Roberts? I hand load so I hope to find something the rifle likes. What are your experiences and what load is most accurate for you?

Can't help you on the 257 bob. I have had four #1s and could not get acceptable accuracy out of any of them. And getting them to hold zero was a problem.
Hope you found a good one.
Good luck with your #1.

Doug627 I have a Number 1 6mm but have not messed with it, you would more than likely find your answer on the Ruger forum, they have a dedicated forum to the No1 like here on the S&W group and I check them occasionly and they are very helpful like our forum. Jeff

Strangest thing... I have had two No. 1's, a .270 and a .45-70.
.270 at best would do about 1.75" at 100 yards with the best handloads.
The .45-70 shot almost like a benchrest rifle. One-hole groups regularly, not something you'd expect.

All 3 of my No. 1's shoot well. My 257 is a laser. I have been using Ramshot Hunter and 115 grain BTSP bullets with great results.

Like Old Corp I've owned two No.1's over the years. A .300 WM and a 45/70.
Never could get the 300 to group well. I wish I hadn't let the 45/70 get away, but you know how it is when some other gun winks at you.
I understand that the Ruger No. 1 can be really finicky about bedding and it is quite an art to get it right......

I owned a Ruger #1 in .22 Hornet that I could not of committed suicide with if I had tried. The stock looked like it belonged on a Cooper, drop dead gorgeous.
Try the Speer 117 grain bullets, they shoot well in my .25/06.

my 257 Roberts is a 1B. I haven't shot it in a while but I believe I was loading 120 grain bullets in it. I got the load from a Shooting Times article many years ago ,think it was about + P loading and 3 shots were under an inch

My 25/06 Varmint is a good number 1. I have done nothing to it and Ruger specifically says in the manual to not mess with it if you have accuracy problems. Send it back and they will fix it. Their new barrels on the #1 seem pretty good.

I have had 3. A tropical in .375 H&H I let get away (How many elephant rifles do you need. and that made 3). A 218 Bee (2006) that will shoot the tiniest groups you ever saw with hand loads, and a 7x57 (pre-1976)that is sup MOA with Federal Premium factory ammo. The most important thing is, don't let any one mess with your forend screw! Ivan

I have 4 (.22-250, 7mmRem, .375H&H, .45-70) they are by far the prettiest rifles I have ever seen sub $1k, but they are also four of the least accurate rifles I have ever owned. That said I am comfortable with each out to 150yrds (which is rather sad if you think about what the 22-250 and 7mm can do), and I have been told with time and energy I can get more out of them. But in the end, did I mention they are darn pretty? Note If you know anyone with a .243 I would love to trade the 7mm for it?

I currently have 5 Ruger single shots (4 #1s and a #3). One is an older #1B in .257 Roberts. It will shoot about anything bullet I've tried but has the older Ruger loooooooong throat. It will group 100gr. Hornady SPs under 3/4" but only if they are seated so they are just hanging in the case by their toenails. I generally stick to 115 grain bullets and heavier in this rifle.
I have found that #1s can shoot better with a good pressure point in the tip of the forearm. The newer #1s do have better barrels and normal throats. I have a #1 RSI in 7x57 and a 1S in .300H&H I bought in the last two years and they shot great right out of the box.

The Ruger #1 is finicky and there is a No. 1 forum on the Yahoo network that has addressed the issue. My #1 is .223 REm. and shoots better than I . If you cannot find the Yahoo forum send me a PM and I'll get its url back to you.

I've had a .223, a 22/250 and a .243 in Number 1's and none of them were acceptably accurate. I've got a Rock River AR that shoots under 1/2 minute of angle. If it doesn't shoot, it doesn't stay.
