My dad's Marlin 99 .22 rifle has been handed down to me, and I plan to keep shooting it like he did for nearly 50 years.

It's drilled and tapped, but what kind of scope mount will work on it?

There is no groove on the top of the receiver.

(I know there were mounts for it, and I've seen pics but with no detail or info.)

Thanks!

The screw distance indicates a one piece mount. Many older gun stores had a display of Weaver bases, Try (before you buy) one for a similar Marlin 22, you might get lucky and hit it on the first or second try. This is a case where you need brick and mortar, not an E-store.Then you will need rings to fit whatever scope you have or desire. Ivan

doc, I've seen them and they are a little narrow base for 3/8" rings. i'll look thru my boxes tomorrow. I have a lot of old stuff left over from my gun shop days that I haven't looked thru in years. lee

That's an early 99.
1959 to maybe '62 or '63.
I think they started grooving the top of the recv'rs in '63 or '64.
Should be a non-micro groove bbl too on that early a 22.

The 'scope mount' was a narrow rail to take the standard tip-off mounts used on the 3/4" dia scopes. Factory called it an 'adaptor base'.
Marlin mfg'd them in the factory and packaged one with each rifle when sold.
The left side of the rec'vr should be drilled and tapped for a rear peep sight too IIRC.

I don't know if Weaver ever made/makes an aftermarket base to fit the screw hole spacing.
Finding one of the original mounts may be tough. I looked but don't have one. Had one that looks like it was for the 39.

Added.. lengths of Weaver style base is available w/o any screw holes in it so it can be fitted in such instances.
Then you can just use standard easy to find 1" Weaver style rings and a 1"d scope.

I believe the model 99 was and is the same receiver as the Marlin model 60. If so Weaver still builds bases for the model 60 and their part number is 12 for this base.

Doc, I am working at the gunstore tonight let me see if we have one as we have most of them there, If so I will grab it , I will let ya know.

There is a large display box full of older Weaver brand mounts. Thad Byers, the owner, is a one man operation but I am sure he would search his stock for you a mount when he has the time.
