'Tis but another example of hoping to throw money at a problem to eliminate training. What hasn't been explained is what the untrained schmuck does when the batteries die or the calibration fails.

The actual number of times when a 1000 + yard/meter shot is available is relatively small. The average sniper shot in 'Nam was reportedly around 450 yards. It was much shorter in Iraq. So the gear is kind of a solution to a seldom seen problem.

Carlos Hathcock did okay without a $28K rifle.

No. No where to shoot it and no way to justify the price of rifle and ammo

On the positive site, it's nice to see what's possible today if you just put enough $ into R&D.

Now, if there's a (big) market for it? Gov. agencies perhaps and some die hard civilian operators with too much money...

In 338 Lapua, junk ammo is $4.00 a round good stuff can run as high $15. With my hand loads and a Savage out of the box 110 BA (OTD $1750 Sept 2010) and a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NSX (also $1750 OTD a month later). I went out on MLK day 2012 (first time out after a stroke 3 months and 10 days before) and nailed cigarette packs at 500 yards. I have not done very well from 750 to 1000 because I haven't re-learned to manage the recoil. Savage makes 2 less expensive models of 338, I have seen men shooting them just fine, I have also seen guys shoot 4 FOOT "groups" at 200, because of junk ammo (The Bitterroot Arsenal stuff I bought from Cheaper than Dirt was horrid) and muzzle break deficiencies. I was at a Thunder Valley and on the 1000 yard bench was a guy with a 408 Chey-Tac. HE let me shoot all I wanted of his $20 a round ammo, I shot 2 rounds. Not because of recoil, but because it was boring. When it is all done for you there is absolutely no challenge. I enjoy the ranging and correcting for wind and drop, on my own abilities. When I miss at 1000, it makes the challenge that much greater! Ivan

I agree with Ivan's post above. When you get it all figured out and connect on a clay target on the bank, or a piece of steel at extended range it IS very rewarding.

A bunch of us shoot 675-1240 yds each Wednesday, Spring and Summer. Mostly steel plates, but we also stick clay targets on the berm.

One keeps records as to the conditions that day, your scope data, etc. It's an OCD guy's dream shooting sport. Lots of small details and record keeping required.



My 6.5 x 47 Lapua. DEFIANCE action, HART barrel, Mc Millian A5 stock, NightForce ATACR scope. THE most consistently accurate rifle I have ever owned, in my 45 years as a rifle nut.

I also shoot a Rem 700 in .308, same stock, and another NF scope.

Frank 237, I love your rifle! I have 2 Rem 700's with that same stock. Friends of mine switched from 6BR w/1:8 twist to 6 x45 Lap w/1:8 for the extra velocity. One was built around a 243 Win Barrel with a little 2000 rounds through it. It is his second rifle in that chambering, on his fist time out, after zeroing at 300, he aimed at a pipe target frame then put 2 more in the same crater at 650 yards. All the guys I shoot with that have fast twist 6 & 6.5 rifles of any chambering have gone to Burger's Hybred design bullets. Hope to shoot with you some time. Ivan
