Ruger Alaskan

I've had one on order for about a month. The LGS called yesterday and told me it in. I'm going to pick it up Friday.
Member Mc5aw purchased one if IRC. I believe he gave it a stellar review. Maybe he'll comment again.
I have a El Paso Saddlery "tanker" holster waiting for it. Can't wait to get it.

Ernie ... Klyde is correct. I stumbled across a used Alaskan at the LGS earlier this year. Tagged at $600 not including tax and call in fee. The Alaskan is forged on an anvil ... it is a massive chunk of steel, but is surprisingly comfortable to carry and shoot. I contacted Earl at Trailmaster Holsters and he whipped up a stellar carry rig for me. (He specializes in Alaskans).

The Alaskan looks "blocky", but handles extremely well for a revolver that bears the profile of an armored car. I like the Alaskan so much, I'm saving up for the new Ruger TALO Kodiak. The Kodiak doesn't have the "unibody" frame that the Alaskan does, though the Alaskan has a "1/2 tang" grip, while the Kodiak has a traditional flush grip akin to any S&W. I don't see any evidence that the Alaskan can be compromised short of being blown up with bad ammo. If you want a revolver for the great outdoors, the Alaskan is it ... and I am a lifetime S&W loyalist saying so. I anxiously await hearing from Klyde once he gets his Alaskan.

I bought the .454 to shoot mostly .45 Colt out of it. Only took it out once with .45 Colt. A little different than my Smiths, but I can get use to it.

interesting indeed, the one I am looking at, has the bbl as part of the frame, NOT screwed in. Its 44 mag, and NO writing on the left side of the bbl, its underneath, it a reg Alaskan? Rubber grip

I'm not nearly as schooled in the nuances of Rugers as S&Ws, but I suspect it's simply an older or younger version of my Alaskan (with the barrel writing). Mine is .44 and eats Specials like .22s. Mags create some serious muzzle flip, but the big rubber grip does a great job taming recoil. You'll feel a Magnum, but your hand won't hate you. Also worth noting, the Alaskan's rubber grip initially looked imposing to me, but it is as comfortable as the S&W 500 Hogue.
Ernie and Klyde ... You've got me itchin' to hit the range tomorrow with the Alaskan and a box HSM Specials.

Full Power Loads = Full Power Fun
Down loaded with 255-grain SWC to .45 Colt levels, a pleasant shooter.
Built like a tank and excellent quality.

They are tanks. I got a concealed grip for mine because it just wasn't near painful enough.

Ernie--I have posted this before. My 10 year old and I picked one up on a lark and we are in gave danger of damnation of a S&W site--it could easily become our favorite revolver. The post above saying it eats .44 specials like .22 is dead on-it is truly amazing. Take it out having never shot it and set up 6 coke cans at 25 yards with .44 special. See what you do. Get ready for 5 of 6 or 6 of 6. I would not hesitate to let any begining shooter that I would start on a .22 shoot it with .44 specials.
We are going to buy another because both my son and I fight over it as our carry gun when we go to our ranch or farms. It's becoming embarassing a 52 year old fighting with a 10 year old.

A friend has a .454/.45 one. With full house 454's in it it will leave little bits of rubber from the grip in your palm. Makes us laugh like schoolboys HAHA!

Picked up my .44 Alaskan in 2013; for some reason, the valley was choked with them. I ordered a more compact GP-100 grip, but prolly will not install it, since the issue Hogue grip is comfy with full mag loads.
The Alaskan IS built like a tank, but like a heavy tank. Hard to believe, but the DA pull is magnificent. It is easier for me to shoot than the SA trigger is. I only shoot mine DA. It handles full bore 180gr Mag loads, no problem.
I would like to try the TALO Redhawk .44 snub cited by mc5aw, but it is uglier IMO than the Alaskan and my hand will no longer tolerate a RB grip. Yeah, I know, custom grip.

Ernie,
The Alaskan you are looking at is most likely a fairly new example. Ruger finally wised up and began to put the "warning label instructions" on the under side of the barrels instead of billboard style on the side. My SP101 I purchased this summer has the warning on the underside and a clean barrel.
If you look at Mc5aw's 3rd from left internet picture of the Alaskan and the Kodiak it shows a clean left side barrel.
Took the day off so I can pick up my Alaskan. LGS opens at 10:00. I'll be waiting like a vulture on a limb.

Holy Moly is this thing a tank. Trigger is not the glass rod break of a Smith but very good. Broke it down for the initial cleaning and installed the Lett grips from Chiggs Grips. The OEM Hogue's are just too big. The Letts fit my hand much better. Also gives the gun a little smaller feel.
The El Paso Tanker fits like a glove.

Klyde ... That a great set up you have. Now wander around the woods for a while with the Alaskan and put some rounds down range.
I went out yesterday and shot a box of HSM cowboy loads. I'm still amazed at how such a "clunky" revolver is so smooth to shoot. Also worth noting, with the right holster, the Alaskan makes a nifty CCW under a jacket.

I have a batch of 240 cast over 8 grs of Unique in the magnum case. Should be a decent load to familiarize myself with the gun. After I cleaned it I was doing a little dry firing. I'm really liking this thing. Weather has been good the last couple of days so hoping to make the range tomorrow.

My Alaskan v my 629-4 3"
I am lucky enough to recently purchase both. I think the Alaskan handles hot stuff much better than the SW. But why carry a tank when you can carry a humv! I carry the 629 on belt carry and have tried the tank carry but grab the SW for woods and hunt backup. I live in fl and I don't think a hog will know or care if he is killed by a SW or ruger. Lol

I've got to stop clicking on this thread, its going to cost me some money. How heavy are these? Anything much over 45 oz gets to be too much by the end of the day for me.
Mike's gun looks really nice with the grip change and that's the photo that's getting under my skin. I can see myself banging away at the 100 yd gong for hours on end with it!

Chris, 45 ounces on the nose. A 3" Smith, depending on model, is approximately 40 ounces. 4" weighs in at 41.5. So not a huge difference. Not trying to start a debate. Different guns period. Apples and oranges.
I wanted a short barrel and any decent Smith with out a IL is in the $1200+ area. Paid much less for the SRH.
BTW Chris, I've got an extra room if you need it. Rent it cheap for ammo.

No, you don't. Just have bigger pockets sewn into your clothing. That way you won't list when walking, and if you step into a puddle, you'll sink straight down!
Great idea, about the tanker rig. El Paso makes that?

I believe El Paso is the leading manufacturer of the Tanker rig, although Simply Rugged makes something similar. The Trailmaster holster I have handles the weight and causes no problems for OWB carry. I ordered a crossdraw model, but found the Alaskan rested on my left hip. Thus, I switched the rig to my strong side and it is perfect. The crossdraw configuration left me with an Alaskan resting in the gunfighter cant.

Klyde--Thanks! It does not suprise me the Ruger weighs more than a 4 inch 29/629. I would have bet the difference was more than 3.5 ounces.

Here are some photos of the Trailmaster rig for my Alaskan. Earl devotes significant time, attention to detail, and care to every holster he crafts. There are numerous options to choose from (copper rivets, double stitching, hammer thong, cartridge loops, carving, etc.), and you'll get a hard use holster that should last a lifetime. I went fairly basic, and as noted above, I found the crossdraw configuration works well on my strong side with the gunfighter cant. The only fancy touch I requested was the modest bear paw stamp.
Earl Southard is a true gentleman to deal with as well. Highly recommended.

Ernie,
The bottom belt strap on the Tanker positions the holster to sit on top of your belt. I wear a Bullhide 1/4" wide belt. The holster sits where the belt overlaps so there is a 1/2" "shelf" the holster sits on. End result is the belt takes up quite a bit of the load. Very comfortable. Probably end up getting a Trailmaster similar to what Mc5aw pictured as an alternative.

I bought a $1200 (A tremendous amount of money for 21 year olds just starting their lives) rifle 4 months before my wife and I's wedding. I felt really really guilty about it but she didn't murder me. I knew she was for sure a keeper!

I picked up my Alaskan in .44 mag about a year ago. There is a bit of a funny story how this purchase came about. I was in a gun store with a buddy just browsing. I saw a Ruger Blackhawk in 327 mag and asked to look at it. As I was looking at it, I was thinking owning an eight shot Blackhawk would be pretty cool. I wanted to buy a gun, but wasn't familiar with this particular piece at the time, and decided to keep looking. Anyway, this older gentleman standing at the counter next to me was chomping at the bit to see it. So I passed it over to him and continued looking. However, I couldn't get that gun out of my head even after we left the gun shop. I got back to my buddy's house and started looking on gunbroker and that's when I realized how bad I screwed up! The one at the gun store was LNIB and was tagged at $425... Any of you guys that are 327 Mag fans know what these Blackhawks are bringing now. So I go back to get it and of course it was gone...
I was pretty bummed to say the least. Anyway, there was only one thing I could do to make myself hurt a little less, and that was buy something else. So I went home with the Super Redhawk Alaskan instead. I love this little gun, and it rode in my pack on my last backpacking trip in Arkansas.
I keep telling myself that I don't need one in 480 Ruger or 454 Casull...but how cool would a pair of these be?

Two years ago I lucked out on a trade with someone on Armslist who did not like revolvers and was able to take it home by offering an M&P 9mm range kit. I replaced the grips with snakeskin Altamont's and put a dab of orange paint on the front sight. It's one beast of a gun and I'm happy to have it in my collection. Compared to a S&W the trigger is not as smooth but it is pleasant. Frame feels like something between an N and X frame, but handles more like an N. Recoil with 44 mag is not as bad as I thought it would be. I mostly shoot 44 spl out of mine. Overall a very well built and engineered revolver. If you are a S&W fan and wanted to branch out and try a Ruger, this would be the gun to do it with.
