Well, I stopped in Cabelas today with some Christmas cash and a gift card and happened upon a used Stoeger Coach Gun, it immediately caught my eye and when I picked it up just had to ask what they would take for it.

I examined it and really it looked barely used. Bore looked great, barrel and stock. So I picked it up for $289 which seems to be ok..

I think you did real well at that price. I have the Supreme flavor in 12 ga that the wife bought me for Cowboy Action Shooting. Took forty rounds before the action loosened enough to break without requiring excessive force. After that no sweat, no strain. Shoots great. You'll enjoy it.

I'm not sure, but last time I looked I had one beside the dresser, next to the bed. I had another and foolishly loaned it to my youngest son. Haven't seen it since. He used to take it plinking with some buddies. Said it got a lot of attention.

You didn't get hurt by the price. Just stay clear of buckshot or slugs, they'll hurt you with recoil.

That's an excellent price as the new models go for $400-550.

I love the look of the Stoeger Coach Gun, and have it on my short list. Another option for anyone looking for a SxS that is a bit more HD and a bit less CAS, is the Double Defense:

Yeah, I'd say the price is "okay". Cheapest gun show cash price I've seen on 'em lately has been $350. That's for a new one, of course. I'd like to have a blued one with the single trigger. Maybe some day.

Didn't know there was a Cabela's in Greenville. Do they have a decent selection of used handguns? Might have to zip down there sometime soon. Looks like it's not too far off I-85S?

I used mine in 12 gauge for six years in CASS match's with zero problems. Box stock except for the polished chambers for the "jerk and stop" empty shell ejection procedure.

Yeah, they had it listed for $349 and I offered $275. I felt like where we ended up was fair.

The long gun racks were really picked through. Normally they are full. And they usually have a decent supply of pistols and revolvers. Quite a few old Smiths but I really don't know pricing on those, they just all seem high.

Nice store though.

Quick update. Just got back from range and what a fun gun. Ran some target loads and some #4 buck and 00. Of course the 00 has some kick but it wasn't that bad. This will sit beside my bedside loaded with #4.

Looking forward to getting it outside and shooting some clays.

Anybody please, can concealed hammer doubles like these have the hammers cocked for long periods of time without losing spring tension? I've always maintained mine empty and uncocked with ready rounds on a stock cartridge slide. Thanks in advance.

Well I know of one 16 gauge Ithaca double (Field grade) that was made in the 20s that has been in cocked mode more than half its life time and it works fine.

It was my father’s gun and he never owned snap caps or pulled the trigger on an empty chamber that I know of. I tried to get him to do the right thing but he was a weekend hunter on occasion, definitely not a “gun guy”. When he died in the 90s I inherited the gun and I use snap caps.

I also have a Stoger 12 gauge Coach and while not a fancy gun will get the job done... I prefer 00 buck and it does tend to kick a bit!

Absolutely! No problem! Leave it 'cocked'.

I have box lock doubles over 100 years old that function just fine: one of them has spent the last 30 with me with the springs compressed (Action 'cocked') and I'm sure most, if not all, of its first 80 years were spent in that condition.

I store all my box lock doubles in 'cocked' condition and have never had, or heard of, a problem.

This is something folks fuss over with no reason.

But as you know well, we love to worry about something.
