Default Sig 220 or SW 686?

Happy New Year all,

I posted about a related topic earlier...I have the chance to pick up a Sig P220 for $600 (used), but noticed they got a 686 7-shot (both the 4 inch and Plus versions). Here's the question, which would you pick up first?

PS- not my first SW, I have the MP Soport and Shield 40, but not a revolver...this would be my first Sig.

Thanks for your help.

As an aside..... don't care much for 7 shot revolvers....... Sig 220s are great .45s.

$600 is too expensive for a used Sig P220 unless it's something unusual. There were some in nickel I believe and some 220s came in 9mm and 38 super, also a few with heel release. But if it's a run of the mill 45acp it's a $450 gun.

That being said, if I were to choose between the two I'd go with the Sig. I carry my guns and I just fell more comfortable with a semi auto

You have two autos but you don't have a revolver. Get the M686.

P220's are great. Like Arik said you should be able to find a nice one for a better price. P220's are so nice right out of the box, from trigger pulls, to fit and finish to outstanding accuracy.

I like 686's too but I'd find an older six shot one. That 125 grain .357 is a fight stopper!

This is the truth. If it's a run of the mill modern production base model P220, $600 is steep. At $600 used, I'd expect to get something above the base trim level. The exception is if you find a good condition W.German rolled slide P220 with box and paperwork. It has to be in overall good condition.

My W. German P220 wasn't in great exterior shape, but had excellent bones. A quick re-finish, replacement of all the wear items, installation of a short reset and short reach trigger, and replacing the gnarly aged Hogue wrap around grips...

If you are looking at a base trim, recent US manufacture P220 and they won't come down in their asking price, then I'd go for the S&W 686. The only caveat is that if the 686 is used, you had better know how to evaluate the condition of a used revolver.

I'm with malpasowildlifer. He sums it up well. I think that an older 686 would be nicer. 600 is more than a 220 should be getting right now. Great guns and you would not be disappointed with it, but it's more money than is reasonable unless it's a target model or special run. 45 ACP is a fantastic cartridge. However, so is the 357 magnum.... So, I would pass on the 220. And, too, the 686, unless you can get it at a good price.

Get yourself a sweet old pre-lock 686. Here's a pic of my early no dash.

In my handgun herd I have a 686-1 6" that I've had for 25+ years and 2 Sig 9mms, a German made P6 and a US made P226 CPO. Of the three my favorite is the 686. In fact, it's my favorite handgun overall. If forced to, my 686 is the last one of my entire herd that I'd sell. If you don't have a revolver a 686 is a great first revolver and may be the only one you'll ever need. You can use .38 target wadcutters up through 125 gr .357s so you have incredible flexibility in ammo, plus 686s are very well balanced and accurate.

Of my Sigs, the German made P6, even with its worn finish, is clearly a hand fitted gun, very accurate and mechanically nicer than the manufacturer refinished US P226. The German P220s I've looked at seem to have been fitted with the same level of care.

686 prices are pretty stable. P220 prices vary. When a shipment comes in the price drops. In between shipments the price goes up. I'd put $600 towards a 686 and wait for the next shipment of P220s

Great price on a 686 Plus and they are difficult to come by, whereas you can pick up a sig for less anytime.

Thanks, finess r,

What would you consider a good price for a 686 Plus?
