I have been selling off a few things because the wife wants a house gun again for me to have other than my handguns. I told her I am best with a shotgun and that way if anything comes up it's there for her once I get her into it again. I had been looking around and was going to order a new Stevens 320 (even though I do know where they're made) but I ran across a nice gun today that will fit the bill. I spotted an older Model 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge that the serial number puts at around 1980-1981 in about 97-98% that takes 2 3/4 only (I never found a need for 3 inch slugs or buckshot). It has a full choke vent rib barrel that's 28 inches long but after tax out the door it was $260. I figure I can find a shorter 18.5 inch smooth barrel with a bead or a 20 inch barrel with rifle sights will do and I will sell the barrel on it online or something. The question I have is, will all the 12 gauge barrels interchange without any issues? I am not an expert on the 870 by any means, I usually have Ithaca pumps but the price on this gun was too nice to pass up. I don't plan on decking this thing out too much, just a shorter barrel and maybe some sling swivels. I like the idea of the shorter barrel with rifle sights and smooth barrel because I could keep it around for deer season as well. Anyone else swap barrels around on the 870 before?

An 870 barrel is an 870 barrel. Any one of the same caliber should fit.
Just unscrew the end cap on the magazine tube and the barrel slides right off.

Just be careful because you can put 2 3/4" barrel on a 3" receiver.
Even though it fits, don't try to fire a 3" shell in that barrel.
The barrel itself should be stamped for the shell size.

CDNN SPORTS - REMINGTON 870 12 20 TACTICAL BARREL TARGET SPORTS

I have these on my table at the shows.
Not made by Remington. Good quality and fits fine.

I do NOT RECOMMEND the Optional Polymer Heat Shield - Mattel makes better plastic toys.

Easy swap David. I have a couple of 18" 870s One stays on the rack in the shop with an extended mag tube and a full compliment of 00 in the tube. Normally never carry it out of the shop since it is so front heavy. Has to be some very strange noise for me to grab it at night while I am in the shop working. Larry

870 is the go-to SD shotgun

I think there's been about 10 million of them made so far....just stay away from the cheaply-built "Express" models. One cheap gun which has really impressed me is the NEF Pardner Pump....it's an 870 copy (although the barrels won't interchange) that's all steel but made in China. Lots of places sell them for $179 to $199 with 18 inch barrel. I've had one for years and it's worked flawlessly...

One way interchangeability.

I hate to differ, but there is nothing "cheap" about a Remington 870 Express, except the price. The only caution that I would give you has to do with putting a 3" chambered barrel on a 2 3/4'' receiver. Firing three inch shells in a 2 3/4" receiver can cause you some problems. If you have a magnum receiver, you can use either 2 3/4" or 3" barrels with no problems.

The newer barrels will fit but the magazine cap won't stay tight because they use the serrated magazine plug to hold it on. The newer cap has no notches on the outer edge they are on the inside of the cap. If you find a barrel that you want just look to see if it has a retaining ball on the muzzle side of the ring that slips over the magazine tube.
