Question 32 short / long Colt and 32 S and W 32 Caliber

Hello to all:

It has been a while since I posted but I think I have come to the right board for an answer.

I have a 32 Colt Police Positive that takes the 32 short Colt and 32 long Colt. I had a terrible time finding ammo for the thing.

I have bid on and H and R 732 32 caliber that is supposed to take the S and W 32 short and long.

My questions are these:

First, is the ammo readily available?

Second, with the Colt ammo interchange with the H and R S and W 32s?

Help me out you ammo experts if at all possible. A correct answer may make a difference in how or if I try to be the high bidder or not?

Feedback?

Save your time and money. The .32 Colt caliber uses .299 bullets, much smaller than the S&W .312 or .313. The S&W rounds won't chamber. Finding the ammo is kind of a chore, and if you have any sense, don't trust the ammo sellers. They're known thieves and swindlers. Honest.

If you attend the larger gun shows there are often tables with antique ammo for sale. If you see a box of .32 Colt and you want it, agree to a price, but insist on opening the box and inspecting the rounds. Expect the seller to be upset, because he's a thief and doesn't like getting caught, especially in public. But open the package. Any that say .32 S&W aren't the same thing. Some sellers may try to tell you they are, and they lie. Guess how I know this stuff.

But if you're persistent, you can find the ammo. A few years ago I bought a Colt (bannish the thought). It was in really good shape, and with hard rubber grips it dates it to pre-1923. My table partner had some rounds at home and brought them to me. So I took it shooting. Its a sweetie. Much like a Benjamin Pellet gun when it goes off. No recoil, just a noise and a hole in the target. It makes a .32 S&W feel like a magnum. Its just not a gun for a guy that wants to shoot it regularly and a box at a time. Over the last 2 or 3 years I've probably hoarded a couple of hundred rounds. No, I don't have dies, nor do I have a source for bullets.

I know Remington still makes the .32 S&W (short) but finding it is sometimes iffy. The .32 S&W L is not to hard to find. A few months ago I found the .32 S&W L everywhere but it took awhile to find the .32 S&W and one box was $35. and another was $55. My gun will only shoot the short. Larry
