Default Colt King Super Target New Service in 44 with Ropers--Letter Arrived --See post #9

This followed me home from Tulsa...I wasn't looking for it. Son spotted the Ropers & pointed them out to me. Gun was listed as a 45 "long" Colt and a bunch more than I planned to spend to acquire my first set of Ropers. Got it, then discovered it wasn't a 45. Barrel is marked "Russian and S&W Special 44". Serial number would date the gun to late 1934. Front sight is a gold bead. I think the hammer and trigger are stock Colt. There's a whole lot I don't know about this puppy. Any further info would be appreciated.

What a nice find, some real cool guns come out of Tulsa. Some day I'll make it to the show. Vintage King and Ropers. Do you plan to put at least one cyl full through it? Thanks for the pics, Larry

Larry - If HE doesn't fire an obligatory cylinder full....I WILL appropriate it and send a whole BOX full of Keith wad cutters through it Maybe not full Keith loads, but same bullet shape & weight at least. Don't want to hurt that gorgeous old Colt.

Randy, have you pulled the grips to see if the gun is round or square butt? Kinda hard to tell on a Colt if you're not used to them. Doesn't matter on value or enjoyment of gun but if you ever decide those Ropers just ain't right, my Colt Super Target is round butt.

Gorgeous. This was my first trip to Tulsa and me and my dad had a great time. Was nice to talk to some forum members too. I didn't see this one, but was lucky enough to see the Police Positive with those non thumbrest Ropers at the forum booth.

Colt Archive letter arrived today. Obviously, I was hoping it was sent directly to King and retailed by them. Wrong. Gun shipped on May 7, 1934, to Anchorage Commercial Company, Anchorage, Territory of Alaska. Is that interesting? Alaska in the 1930's was a bit wild... So, I have no idea when it was sent to King or by whom...

The letter does state that it was a New Service Target with unspecified grips...

I followed up on this interesting thread. I called the Colt Archive department for clarification on my letter. My gun left the factory as a "New Service Target". The historian said that records sometimes listed King sights but as far as she knew Colt never shipped a full King Super Target. Some records showed Colts being shipped directly from the factory to King.

JP@AK had also PM'd me some information on the Anchorage Commercial Company (ACC), currently called the Alaska Commercial Company and still in business though changed hands a couple of times. Also got some info on mid 1930's Alaska. Interesting times on the Alaskan frontier. They were just about to get air service at the time my gun was shipped. Thanks for all the info...
