THE MOST BEAUTIFUL .38 SPL SNUBBY REVOLVER ? ? ?
I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING BOTH COLT AND S&W REVOLVERS FOR CLOSE TO 60 YEARS. I DO LOVE MY S&Ws, AND THAT IS THE BRAND THAT I SHOOT ON A REGULAR BASIS. ON OCCASION, I WILL TREAT MYSELF WITH A PYTHON OR DIAMONDBACK FROM THE SAFE.…..
I TOOK THIS UNFIRED 2.5" DIAMONDBACK OUT THE OTHER DAY, TO LOOK AT IT. IT WAS MFG IN 1978, AND HAS SAT IN MY HUMIDITY CONTROLLED SAFE FOR 35 YEARS. IMHO, THIS MODEL MAY BE THE MOST GORGEOUS .38 SPL SNUB EVER CREATED…...
HERE IT IS, PICTURED NEXT TO MY 2 1/2" 686+ WHICH, IMHO, IS ALSO A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER….
BASED SOLELY ON APPEARANCE, NOT FUNCTION, WHICH DO YOU LIKE ? ? ?

I'll take the Smith. Not a fan of the snake barrels and most of their grips look like I made them out of pallet wood.
MHO but there it is.

JOE,
When I read your title, "The most beautiful .38 spl revo? ? ?", I immediately thought Detective Special. Then I thought, S&W 15 with 2" barrel and adjustable sights. Then I opened the thread and... Yes. You are right. Sticking with .38 Special revolvers, I agree the Diamondback snubby is the beauty queen.
I wish I had one.

I also like the D'Back snubs Joe. I have one in nickel that's unfired in the box and it will stay that way 'til I sell it. This one however has seen a lot of use and will stay with me until one of my heirs sells it.

The Colt is OK, but give me a M36/M60 or a M10/M66 snub for the best looks. JMO.

I have an m36 and a 2 1/2" diamondback, and I have to go with the diamondback as well, very sexy handgun. I love the 36 for many reasons, but, cosmetically, the colt looks better proportioned.
The m36 snub needs a bit longer barrel and bigger grips if it were to be as well proportioned, but then it wouldn't be a pocket revolver.

Without question, the Colt 3rd Gen Detective Special is the one to beat in the looks department. That said, my first choice in a snubby will always be the S&W Stainless Chief's Special.

Between those two, I'll take the Colt.
Overall, I'd say a round-butt Model 19.

Diamondback/Python ? What revolver man cannot like them. But simply for looks ( and equal quality), the 686/586 fill me bill.

Obviously beauty is a very subjective thing.
Objectively, I've never felt that adjustable sights have any business being on a 2" revolver. Snub nose revolvers are almost by design intended to be carried concealed and the higher profile of an adjustable sight just creates a snag hazard.
Subjectively, an adjustable sight ruins the lines of a snub nose.
I like the S&W Model 36 and Model 60 2" revolvers, but the best looking variants are those with 2 1/8" barrels and shrouded ejector rods. The lines just look better.
Below is a 1 7/8" tapered barrel Model 36 and a 2 1/8" Model 60-14. I think they both look great, but the late configuration Model 60 looks better.

Too modern for me. I'll take the original for looks over the shrouded elector rod and those funky stocks.

So alwslate is partial to snubbies with adjustable sights. Rjm6120 said snubbies with adjustable sights look weird to him. This is fine and everyone took it the statement as just a difference in taste.
I said the same thing about shroud less revolvers and I get that reply? Are you kidding me?

What a tough call! I have a beautiful Diamondback but not a snub. Can't argue about the aesthetics. However, I really like the Md 15 K frame with square butt. Of the numerous snubbies that Ihave, this is the one that I think is the most attractive.

I like the 3rd and 4th gen DS as well. Beautiful and functional little revolvers!
I've always preferred the Diamondback to the Python though.....

I think shroud less looks OK when the extractor rod is supported at the end like on the M36 I posted earlier and flush with the barrel.
But when the extractor just sticks out unsupported, it does look like a toothpick sticking out.
I always wonder what happens if an unsupported extractor rod get hit if you were to drop the gun or bump it hard on something. Seems like the ejector might jam or even bend the crane.
Maybe that never happens.

Of the TWO choices, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm voting for the Diamondback. Colt did make one or two good looking revolvers.
I'll also add it's tough to compare a highly polished deep blue revolver against a stainless steel gun. Stainless is great for carrying and regular use, but will never be as attractive as that old fashioned high gloss deep blue finish, that both Colt and Smith and Wesson put on their high end revolvers.

Smith prewar 1902 RB BB
The prewar round butt .38 M&P which I believe was a 1902 vs a 1905 in bright blue is IMO a classic looking revolver. Always had an affection for the half moon front sight as well. Last one I saw was on gunbroker for $4k if I remember correctly.

My pre-lock 640 with original smooth-wood grips is pretty.
(It's .38, not .357, so it qualifies.)

A LGS had a Colt Banker's Special on consignment a while back.
It's a 38 S&W and is smaller than a Colt DS -- mainly because of the shorter cylinder (about 1/4 inch smaller frame).
I thought it looked cool and would be a good pocket gun. Small and 6 rounds.
I've been kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance.

The D'back is flat out gorgeous right up until the attach the stock. It throws it out of proportion and look like a*....well, not good.
The J frame is proportionate tip to tip. The M36 flat latch would be my pick.

It looks like the Diamondback has collected a fair share of the votes. It would be interesting to see the results of a poll with the top favorites from this thread.
I am a bit surprised that this one hasn't shown up yet:
Bodyguard:
If 3" barrels are allowed in the 38 snubbie beauty contest (without protest), then a here's a J with Farrant grips:
Since the waters have already been muddied a little with .357s (heck, they'll shoot .38s, won't they?) I have to toss this purdy snubbie into the mix:
Colt Lawman MkIII:
The 2-1/2" Diamondback snubbie still gets my vote.

I also have to say the model 15, not a big pony gun guy.

But it has that toothpick sticking out of the end. What if you dropped it? You might jam the ejector or even bend the crane. But maybe that never happens. I'm sorry,I just couldn't help myself. You know I'm just yankin' your chain, right?

It's not the most pristine example, but my vote is for the baby Chiefs Special.

Very true - but I admit that I am a huge S&W K frame fan, especially in 2 inch versions. In the case at hand, I like Joe's S&W L frame better than the Colt - I have one very much like that my own self.
I have a number of 2" K-frames, mostly M10s but one is a M15 and there is a 2.5 inch M19. I think this one is spectacular, and I usually prefer round butts but this gun is, well, I already said spectacular....
