I bought an H&K USP 9mm Compact V1 some time ago. The intended purpose was for an example in my NRA basic pistol class. Last week I ordered the law enforcement modification (LEM) kit for it. This kit changes the gun from a DA/SA to a DAO. However, it's not just any DAO. With this mod, the hammer spring remains compressed even though the hammer is decocked. Thus, when the trigger is pressed, there is about a 1.5-2lb pull as the hammer is cocked until it hits the sear. Then it's a 4lb 3oz press just like a single action gun. The best way to describe the feel is, it's just like a single action gun with a long take up. The LEM also removes the safety switch/decocker (H&K calls it a control lever). It is unnecessary with this mod. Some leave it in because they are used to it, but it really serves no purpose.

Today was my first opportunity to shoot the gun with this mod.

Between my friend and I we fired 101 rounds. This included some 5 shot strings, lots of controlled pairs and some emergency reloads. Much of it was done with a timer.

Today I used 5 yards and didn't change distances. I was more concerned with function than accuracy so, I wanted a relatively close target.

I was pleasantly surprised. This gun has spent too much time sitting in the safe because I've never shot it well. Today was a different story. I had no trouble keeping controlled pairs within a fist of each other. If I concentrated, I was making cloverleaf patterns. Even under time pressure I was able to beat the PAR times and keep the same fist sized accuracy. After about three controlled pairs, I was hitting about 1.5 seconds while starting from the ready. The first emergency reload drill (one shot, eject mag and move, insert new mag, fire two shots) I did in just over 5 seconds and the second was about 4.8 seconds. This was without a mag pouch and just grabbing the new mag out of my pocket. I'm happy with those times and will get faster with practice.

As a regular 1911 shooter, the reset is farther than I like, but not unmanageable. While previously this gun was relegated to "novelty" status, it will now get out more. I may do a few competitions with it. My accuracy has improved greatly with this upgrade. I'm sure some of it is psychological, but better is better. Who cares what the reason is as long as there is improvement?

This gun was a great piece of engineering before, I just couldn't shoot it very well. Now it's a great piece of engineering that I can shoot OK. I may have to shoot it some more.

My DAK Sig 229 was about 5lbs. That's much the same. I liked mine o.k., sounds like you're pretty happy with it. Good design/system.
btw: does the LEM system provide re-strike?
