The early speed guys were used to drawing from Rodgers holsters, in the front and from the hands up for Bianchi, So it was a natural for Jim to be able to draw that way. Him and his wife Linda were both actors at that time. She was a real shooter , Womans Steel Challenge Champ and up there in Bianchi Cup in the real early 80's.
In the early days there were a couple real lookers, her and Jo Anne Hall, (I believe) made an impression on us guys at the early Bianchi Cups, they were good shots, but mostly it had nothing to do with their shooting, HA ! This is fun remembering 30+ years ago. Take care. Bob

Bren Ten Karma.............

I have a new (never worn or even tried on) ball cap from the day the Bren Ten was introduced at Gunsight. It is white in color with blue letters across the front that says "BREN TEN". On July 8th, 5pm PST, I will give it away to someone that has posted on this thread (you people are automatically entered) or to anyone else that 'claims' to own a Bren Ten and adds a post to this thread. I will put all those names in a hat and my beautiful wife will draw one. With a little communication back and forth that named person will receive an actual "BREN TEN" hat......... Big Cholla

And calibers can be interchanged on the same frame. But it's fairly heavy. I've had one for about 9 years (.45 ACP and .38 Super), and it's one of my favorites.

Witness Steel Full Size- Tanfoglio - EAA Corporation/ USSG
This is because both the Bren Ten and the large frame Tangfolio designs are up-sized versions of the CZ75 design.

I am very fond of the EAA offierings. EAA used to be located in Dade county Florida and shot at Uncle Hal's gunshop and range on Tuesdays. It must have been 15-20 years ago that they did this pair for me. One is 45ACP and one is 38 Super.

The more recently offered Elite Match is very reasonably priced considering the performance of the firearm.

However I really like the limited. The long dust cover adds to the weight and dampens recoil rather substantially.

And if you want Velocity, the Hunter is hard to beat with that nice 6" tube and sight radius.

I too am a big fan of the Tanfoglio product known in the US as the 'Witness' series. I have two and both have conversions slides for alternate calibers. The original 9 mm is now also a 40 S&W. The 40 is more accurate (very) than the 9 mm....go figure. The original 45 acp has a rare 22 LR slide. The 22 LR version is very accurate and you can imagine how a substantial handgun of that size and weight holds while shooting the 22 LR. The ergonomics are tops for me and my smallish hands. While I would really like to own a Tanfoglio in 10 mm, I am in good shape with that caliber with my Colt Delta Elite and my S&W M 1066. .................

Per my offer of Bren Ten Karma............ The very old, but never worn or even tried on Bren Ten Ball Cap goes to.............. bc1023 ..... Very appropriate IMHO, as he is one of the few of us to actually own a Bren Ten. This hat was handed to me on that fateful day by one of the "D"s. I never caught which one it was and my memory is too faint now to try to identify by pictures. I just put it in my shooting bag. If Member "bc1023" will PM me with a mailing address, this cap will be in the mail the next day.............. Thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,, Big Cholla

PM sent!

Thank you, sir. That was a very kind and generous thing to do. I will certainly enjoy it.

I've always loved the Bren Ten. Its one of the coolest pistols ever built.

Miami vice had a huge impact on the eighties. I don't think they were a product of the times, I think they made the eighties. The show had a huge impact on fashion, and music. A song from an unknown artist would be featured on an episode, andthe artist was an overnight sensation.

To me the biggest icon, is not the Bren Ten, cool as it is. To me the star of the show is the Galco, shoulder holster.
How that holster came into being and got the Miami Classic name which it carries to this day is a story in itself.

I remember setting the vcr to come on and tape the show when I was in the field during my time at Ft Bragg. It was a cool show for its time and set a television genre that far outlasted it.

Thanks all for an interesting thread. I learned more about Miami Vice or ten Bren and various loads than I ever would have thought of. Wasn't into Miami vice that much or semi auto's in the 80's but sure enjoyed the info. I'll keep my 357 mags handy since I have no 10mm or sig 357

Well, I have a somewhat different slant on the OP's Bren Ten essay in that a lot of what he wrote is "Kinda' Sorta' what happened. Sort of close but no cigar. For instance the two Bren Ten blank guns used on the show were specifically made as blank guns in .45 ACP. No thought was ever given to making a 10mm blank gun. Also, the MEC-GAR magazine fiasco was substantially different than the OP stated and had almost nothing to do with the bankruptcy. The toolroom magazines made by Triple K worked just fine. However, MEC-GAR chose not to heat treat the magazine bodies. When used with the 10mm Norma ammunition, the tubes would distort after 400 rounds or so to the point that they became difficult to impossible to insert into the gun's magazine well. There was a 2nd magazine vendor to D&D but the 10mm caliber specific magazines came to Huntington Beach as components and not assembled magazines. Even these were not exactly correctly manufactured.

The two best sources of accurate information regarding the Bren Ten and the gun's Miami Vice connection can be found in the book " Bren Ten-The Heir Apparent" and at the Bren-Ten.com website. You will find there a couple of articles written by me including a Bren Ten Buyer's Guide. The worst are IMGDB.com and Wikipedia. The various Miami Vice websites are not so hot either.

I remember when the show came out, I didn't really care for the original shoulder holster Crockett wore, Ted Blocker's 'Lifeline' rig. But when Galco was chosen to fit his S&W 645, I thought that was one cool rig!

I bought one around 1988 to fit a West German Sig Sauer P226, I still have it and last time I wore it, years ago, it still fit great, but looked a bit worn. I oughta dig it out...

Actually, the Galco Jackass Rig took over from the Ted Blocker Lifeline rig during the second season while Crockett was still carrying the Bren Ten. Don Johnson was complaining about the back plate on the Blocker rig printing from the first day he wore it. He also wore the LifeLine Rig's harness upside down and inside out. He claimed it kept it from sliding around. You would think that with the suede side out on the straps, it would be just the opposite.

The Ferrari was confiscated from a drug dealer/criminal & came out of the motor pool. There was one episode where they wanted it back, but Sonny convinced them that he needed it to maintain his cover. I suspect it was the same story for the boat.

For those interested in the original Bren Ten and Vltor's Peregrine Falcon Project, see this thread:

Bren Ten - 1911Forum

I also have additional information at 10mm Talk, The Ten Ring, Bren-Ten.com and the Bren-Ten.com Forum but you will need to search these sites. Also, If you can buy or borrow a copy of Carrillo's book "Bren Ten-The Heir Apparent", please do so. It's an easy and engaging read-sort of like an extended magazine article. Ron and I spent 7 years gathering and assembling factual information for it and he did a great job in writing and publishing it.
