Real or fake, looks like a ***. you might want to save your hard earned money and look for a revolver in better condition.

Someone went to a lot of extra trouble (barrel and frame stamps, stock medallions, etc.) to make an obvious non-S & W revolver to appear like one. Finish, appearance of parts, proportions are also incorrect. Run, do not walk from this one.

How do you guys tell it's fake? I just see a beat up J frame. And the Serial number would be on the bottom of the grip anyway

That is a most interesting specimen. Its a shame there is no serial number. If it had numbers, I would roll on a few bucks just for the research factor. As it stands, its red hot. Fake or not, probably is, run now from it.
Its glowing trouble.

The forward frame is too wide.
The trigger is not S & W, and both it and the hammer are blued. (If it were just the finish it could have been redone).
The blue and polish are not up to S & W standard (ditto).
The teeth on the ratchet are the wrong shape.
The tip of the ejector is not S & W.
The rear frame (backstrap) comes up too high.
An S & W J frame would be stamped ".38 S & W SPL." on the right barrel; it would not be spelled out.

Fake.
In pic # 2 and # 3 you can see the sideplate comes up to the bottom of the cylinder window, all the way to the cylinder stop.
Not so on a real S&W.
Also in Pic # 2 it appears to have a strain screw. J Frames do not have strain screws.
In Pics # 4 and 5, one of the tips of the extracter star is pointed.
There is an offset hole in the cylinder face under the odd tip.
Run from it. and Welcome to the Forum.

This revolver is very reminiscent of some of the products from the Khyber Pass in the Spin Ghar Mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Look at the design under S&W in the brass grip medallion . Sure looks mid-Eastern to me. Along with the overall quality. Saw a lot of this stuff in the 1980s. Just an observation.

Some years ago, S&W marketed a Non-Gun copy of a J fame revolver. At first glance I thought this might be one of them, however on closer examination, I'm agreeing with Mike. It has the earmarks of a middle eastern or Asian copy. Ed.

That further leads me to believe the origin of this gun is from Asia, as in the years past, you saw many examples of these Asian made guns in the Philippines and other far eastern counties. You could see little children sitting with a few files and a piece of old railroad rail that would be turned into a copy of a Thompson sub machine gun in a few weeks. Ed.
