Default Colt SAA 1st Gen...questions.

Seeking additional info on the below old Colt.
Bought off GB. Local dealer.
I knew at the time of purchase that it is a "Parts" SAA.
Dates to 1906 with a 1929 grip frame. Great stags.

Old gun was converted to 38 special "back in the day"
which I understand was common. In addition, the top strap
was milled for a S&W sight assembly.
Hammer changed likely from a Colt New Frontier.

Front sight removed from the barrel and that is my
question.
Barrel is two line address on the top and 38 special
in 4 3/4 inch.
What generation do you think the barrel is ?
1st..2nd ?
Pics...

Going to do something to it but have not decide
yet which way to go.(reason of the purchase)
Suggestions considered.
Thanks in advance....

The Colt Forum could answer that I am pretty sure.

Put the S&W sight back on, then find a New Frontier barrel. Shouldn't be much trouble to regulate the sights. Real nice old Colt!

xfuzz,

While it's a bit hard to get a good read on the Barrel Address from the photo...With a somewhat high degree of certainty going by the Caliber Marking...I'm pretty well assured the Barrel is a 1st Gen as it's the one they started using around 1929 possibly when it was converted to .38 Special!!

Also...If you can obviously see the Frt. Sight was just removed...Rather than the Barrel being cut back from a 5 1/2" which is unlikely given it would have a Single-Line Address...I'd have a New Std. SAA Sight Blade installed in the Original 1st Gen 4 3/4" Barrel...Just My Honest Opinion!!

Can't give you an accurate vintage on that barrel. What to do with it? Honestly, I would re-mount that S&W sight, a proper height front ramp sight, and shoot it as is with 38spl. 158 cast SWC's at about 850 fps. A nice effective small game load, without a lot of stress on the gun.

The gun may be stronger than I am giving it credit for, but the early manufacture date of the frame, along with the metal removed from the top strap would make me cautious of frame stretch with heavier or bigger caliber loads loaded on the warm side.

You might get on the Single Action Shooting Society Forum, too. There's a bunch of Colt SAA experts in that game.
