Question Odd Grip: What Is It?

Found this in a box of old junk grips. Appears to be solid Bakelite and the way the grooves are located/shaped, it's for the left hand. A through hole passes through the grip. I've thought machine pistol foregrip, manual transmission shifter, all kinds of stuff but I'm stumped. Any idea what this grip belongs to?

My guess is a gearshift knob, similar to this:

Except for the color, it looks like a grip for a Wham-O slingshot.

I've seen something similar to that on the levers that crane operators use for control of the boom. They were shaped for the right and left hands to use.

Dan Wesson revolver? They attach through the bottom of the grip but the top hole isn't/shouldn't be round.

Good ideas, guys, but I still haven't been able to find an example of any of those items similar to this one online.

I think Marshwheeling nailed it. A slingshot handle would, for most people, be held in the left hand.

I was thinking it might be a handle or grip for a custom bow. I found some made of wood with similar shapes but nothing like this material.

It reminds me of the old shifters that came on some Plymouth Road Runners and such back in the late 60's early 70's. Those that I remember were wood, but this might be an aftermarket version.

It would screw into the shifter, wide end up, with the finger groves forward, and the single grove in back for the thumb.
