I lost a Kershaw Blur a few years ago. I was stopped to put fuel into a big tender truck and it must have gotten jarred loose on the climb into and out of the cab on that big monster. I had that knife for about five years and Kershaw had already replaced it once under warranty. It was crazy sharp, but I really disliked the plastic scales.
My lovely wife bought me a nice Benchmade to replace it on my birthday several years ago. The Benchmade is all metal and quite a bit heavier, if it comes of my pocket, there is a noticeable lightness on that side.

It was later in life when I started collecting antique folders. Before that they were just a work tool. I would use up a knife within 2 years. They had either been ground away, blades broken, been sway backed, burnt by a live electrical wire, or loosened to the point of replacement. Many times they were just lost. Stuck in stump after gutting a elk, and forgotten about. I had 2 folders returned after years apart. A little 2 blade Buck was found in a parking lot of a construction yard where I would often get out of my coveralls. A relative found one of my lost folders in the cushion of her couth may years later. It was an early single blade US made Parker with stag handles. I should have taken better care of that knife. It is scratched and heavily used. My most memorable lost folder was an unknown brand (usually Schrade's). While on a remote job site in northern Washington state, my rifle took a spill that landed on its scope. Unsure if the scope was out of alignment, I drew an x on a piece of paper, walked 100 paces and used my pocket knife as a nail to keep the paper on the tree. Yup you guessed it. I nailed that folder, exactly 2" above the bullseye where the rifle had been previously sighted. On the way back to town I shot a coyote with the rifle, so the loss of another knife was not mourned.

I lost a Gerber Fairbairn a few years back, I had carried it for years. Not certain where it went missing but the inlaws is the last place I remember having it. Loved that knife so much a replacement was immediately purchased. Can't think of another knife that I've lost, wore out a few, but that one lost Gerber... heart breaking.
This thread needs picks.

Last winter after 12 inches of snow overnight....... the snowblower found the Sunday Paper before I did.......... on the first pass up my 200ft. driveway.....an "O-c--- I'm in big trouble" moment.
Good news the shear pin didn't break...... but my all stainless Kershaw I'd had for 7-8 years and is no longer made......... went missing..............
Figured I'd find it with the next snow melt.........
Figured I'd find it when the snow/ice piles along the driveway melted.....
Figured I'd find it in the Spring........
Figured I'd find it as soon as I bought a good replacement.........
Figure I'll find it someday..............
Carrying a Kershaw Blur now....... nice knife at a decent price...... but a bit bigger than I'd like for EDC
Bought my wife a nice Benchmade knife...... 10-12 years ago...... so she would have one nice knife..... she put it away so "the boys" wouldn't "accidently find it"..................
you guessed it!

One sad, one funny:
I had an early Leatherman that I used while working on a car and apparently left on the fender when I test-drove it. Never found and greatly mourned as it came to me from the ATF bomb tech who introduced me to that fine tool.
When in uniform I carried a cheap, very flat, very sharp folder marked "Seaman" in my sap pocket. One day the knife just disappeared. I searched my house, my patrol car, my locker - nothing. After much searching I found another. Five years later I was moving and drained my waterbed. There was the original, between the mattress and liner. The Seaman had been underwater for 5 years but was no worse for wear.

I regret to report that I lost a Bob Jones custom folder on an elk hunt in N NM.
I also lost the Buck folder that I carried in SEA under similiar circumstances.
So I don't leave town carrying a knife with sentimental or very much monetary value.

For years I carried one of those little Swiss Army knives, the one with the toothpick, blade, and scissors.
Every time I'd lose it I'd look for a week, then buy another.
Never failed that I'd find the lost one a few days after I bought a new one.
I think I had 4 of them at one time.

A few years ago, my wife gave me a Benchmade Griptilian for Christmas. It quickly became my favorite EDC.
One day I lost it at work. I was so sorry to lose it, I ordered a replacement that very evening. The next day at work, there it was on the tarmac, lying right next to my bus. The replacement sat on a shelf for a while, in reserve, but eventually became a birthday gift for my son-in-law.
A year or so later, I bought another Benchmade, a 550 Mini Barrage. A few months later, I lost this one too. It didn't turn up the next day, or the next. It hurt the pocketbook a bit more to replace this one, and I could only find it in a black finish blade. I still carry that one, but a few months ago, I found one with the stainless finish on the blade. I happened to have the money, so I grabbed it to have the spare.
Meanwhile, my wife berates me for carrying expensive knives to get lost. Then she turns around and buys me a SOG Spec Elite, a knife I likely never would have picked out for myself, but a very nice knife nonetheless. What is a guy supposed to do, leave it on the shelf?

Thought I lost or misplaced my Puma Skinner I bought in 67. Carried but never got to use before it went missing. I was BS. Found it in the trunk of my SUV 4 years later stuck between floor and wheel well. Glad I found it when I saw what the older carbon blade Puma's are going for on Flea Bay. I recall the price back in 67 was $30 or at least thats what I paid. Sorry ya lost you Sog Twitch as it is a nice knife. When I saw the Sog Trident Tanto with spring assist I had to have it and thats what I pack now for a carry knife.

I have never understood the theory of not using an expensive something cause it could get hurt. I hunt with old Winchesters, Smiths and Colts. I carried many antique Case knives and yes some get use marks. Since Leatherman came onto the market, I no longer use my pocket knife for anything but cutting. I have however quit carrying antique bone handled folder after a Case Tested came out of my pocket and hit the cement while pulling out my car key. Now I still use high quality antique knives but mainly using the yellow or slick black handled variety.

I had a S&W folder, the one that was all metal and the blade flipped out of the handle. Very flat and easy to carry but also apparently too easy to lose.

Too many to talk about. I've got expensive EDC pocket knives laying in fields and parking lots all over the Bootheel. Current Benchmade automatic has managed to hang around for two or three years. I don't see the point at all of carrying a cheap knife just because I think I might lose it. If it breaks when I try to use it, I may as well not have one to begin with . . .

For fathers day 1985, I rewarded myself for fathering our 4th child (Father's day presents can't be left to 6 year olds and broke house wives!), So I bought a new Gerber pocket tool. The style that were screwed together not riveted. It came in a nice leather pouch. I repaired the stitching on the pouch several times over the years, but in the fall of 2008 it wore through the leather and was lost on the grounds of a apartment complex I worked at. I believe it was found but not returned. The newer ones are fine, but nowhere as smooth operating as the original! Ivan

The first Benchmade I ever bought, I lost working over Christmas break while home from college in 2002. I can't remember the model number but it had the axis lock and was blue with black scales so to speak...to this day I have no idea what happened to it. Very expensive lesson was learned that day.

I have several SAKs, all Victorinox, and have lost track of at least a couple more, including a Wenger that was my first. I say "lost track" because I don't think they are really lost, they are out in the garage somewhere, living in motorcycle tool kits or tucked into various fairing pockets or pieces of motorcycle luggage. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of Leatherman multis out there too, in moldy leather sheaths.
I rarely used to travel anywhere without at least three of the following: Leatherman, an SAK, an Opinel 7 or 8, my little Anza and my Tapio Wirkkala puukko, the best campfire steak knife I ever had, although the Opinel was right up there. They didn't all get used on every trip, but a couple always did. The one time I tried to go light and limit myself to the blade on my Leatherman, I regretted it.

Had a nice Buck folder my brother gave me at Christmas a few years back. Apparently my seat belt snagged the clip and as I was getting out to get gas and probably bounced under the truck. When I got home noticed it was gone and drove back to the gas station only a few minutes away thinking maybe someone turned it into the clerk. Should have known with this "find it claim society". Oh well I thought the best for a while.......

Spyderco Delica was my EDC for several years until one day I wore a pair of new jeans. They were stiff and shiny, and somewhere on my several errands that day, the knife slipped out, probably when getting into or out of my truck. I've carried an Endura since then, and have gotten into the habit of tapping that pocket now and then. When I don't carry it I still absent-mindedly tap the pocket and have a tiny panic attack until I remember that I left it at home. Got a bunch of others, but that one has been a mainstay.

I carried a German Puma for years & used it multiple times to skin big game animals. My wife had gotten it for me from the box of lost & found knives at the County Court House where she ran the Security Magnatometer. It was the end of the year and box was marked for destruction, so the Sergeant let everyone look through it. Anyway, in 2003 I used it to cut open a bundle of PVC pipe at a Home depot in Mesa, AZ. Apparently I layed it on the shelf to help my father pull some of the pipe & walked away without it. Home Depot was only about 5 minuyes from my parents home and I realized it was gone as soon as we got there. I immediately drove back and looked without success, some *** got a good knife.
In September 2010 I found a SOG Flash II as I was leaving Carlo Creek, Alaska. The tip was chipped and the pocket clip was broken, I almost threw it away but decided to bring it home. When I got home I started with Google & found the SOG Website, much to my surprise it was a nice knife and was under warranty. I called Customer Service and they sent me a new pocket clip at no charge. I was able to repair the chip amd have carried it as my EDC since.

Chronic pocket tapping is just one of the clues that LEO's use to identify those carrying concealed weapons. Newbies and the unconfident constantly tap the weapon to make sure it's still there . . .

A benchmade leopard while trying to scrape all the chrome off the bottom of a Harley a few years ago. A spyderco police model and a nice discontinued Sig but I'm hoping these two are somewhere around the house.

Roughly 30 yrs ago, following an unsuccessful stint as a vendor of Queen cutlery, I wound up "stuck" with a 3" Easy-Open Single Blade Jack with faux bone grips that simply did not sell. I thought, "Oh well, I'll just start carrying it myself." Great little knife, served me well, stayed sharp, and I lost it 6, count 'em, SIX times, in places as widely separated as Snohomish and Yakima counties, and it always came back to me. I still have it. I guess the "knife gods" really meant for me to have this one.

45 years ago, I purchased a Buck Folding Hunter (back when they were much thinner than they are today). Carried it all thru the Service, 1969-73 & for a while on the ranch in SoCal. The leather belt pouch had lost the flap so it was open on top. Well, somewhere along the line, gravity took over & it was gone. I replaced it with a Puma #270, now I believe called the "General." I still have it, but I'll be durned if I'll ever put it into an unsecured belt pouch.

I've lost more than I can count. Two that hurt were a first production run Griptillian and an Al Mar folder. I've never replaced either. I have several Benchmade folders that make it into the rotation now but my favorite EDC is a Bark River Essential in a pocket sheath.

Like everyone else I've had tons of knifes over the years, one of my favorites to this day being the Schrade LB-7 lock back folder. But the one knife that I lost while in the woods hunting was my Favorite and hurt the most when I lost it: It was a copy of the modified Bowie knife that was used by "Rambo" in Rambo 3!
I've always liked a Bowie knife and when I saw this movie I had to have one!!!! The best hunting knife I've ever owned!! The only flaw was in the wood handle splitting due to the design of the knife I believe.. When it split, I Super glued it back together and taped it with black plastic tape which served for a few years till I found a block of aluminum that I drilled and shaped to replace the wood. It was actually a quite Spiffy modification that made the knife even more functional!
Well, I left it on the back of my truck while hunting and haven't seen it since, BUT..... I liked it so much that when I found a Saddle/Tack shop that could order me a new one I didn't hesitate!! Here's a couple of pic's:

About 7 years ago, I misplaced my Gerber Gator . As luck would have it, turned up last Nov . As MY luck would have it, it turned up on a TSA scanner at the airport. Good and gone now .

I carried a Case slimline Trapper for many years as a teenager and young man. While on a Ferris wheel with cages that tumbled I watched my knife fall out of my pocket and fly past my upside down head.
I found it when we got off, buried in the dirt a ways off from the ride. Glad it didn't hit someone before it landed....
I lost several of those knives over the years and would always just buy another one just like the other one.
Regards,
turnerriver

I lost a Spyderco Paramilitary in the woods years ago. Never again. My max budget for a blade is now $50 or less.

Good point. I'm aware of that clue, and I don't tap to check if my pistol is still there. Then again I use a good holster and I don't carry anywhere that it's not legal. Only one person ever asks if I'm carrying, often when our surroundings begin to look a little sketchy. I smile, she smiles and we go along our way.

It is nice to hear from someone who uses a traditional folder. Only a few mentioned on this thread. About all are metal handled, one hand opening, and with a pocket clip. These newer knives are so superior for everyday use and FAST, but I can not cozy up to any of them. I have a number of them, carry them for a day and toss them into a drawer. They just don't have panache. I feel a sense of relief after putting a traditional back into my pocket. The Case slimline trappers are seldom heard of. I have the single and 2 bladed , red boned XX models in my stash. Never got around to carrying them though.

I have a Buck knife folder that Chuck Buck engraved on opening day at Cabelas that I lost. It wasn't priceless or anything but it was my edc for work. I noticed at the end of my work day that it was gone. I was sick and searched every where. It was about 6 months later I was mowing at work and saw something metallic catching the sun. Not wanting to hit it, I jumped off the mower and there she was. She went through the winter and had some mild surface rust. I rarely carry it anymore and now that Mr. Buck has passed it can't be replaced. He was a super nice guy, he kept asking me why I didn't want my name on the knife. I told him that would ruin it and we both had a laugh.

Lost a real nice Gerber folder inside the dash of my daughter's Volvo 245 while installing a new radio head unit. Woulda cost about a week of labor to remove everything to get it out.

One year my wife bought my a nice D2 Benchmade Griptilian. I carried for about two years and then lost it at the deer lease after gutting a buck with it. I drove back once (4 hour round trip) and spent most of a Saturday looking for it. I never found it.
Next year when we got together to clean up and fix up the lease, someone found it in the county dirt road sticking up out of a dirt bank after the road had been graded. I had forgot I had laid it on the bumper of the truck. The knife was in poor shape, but I called Benchmade, told them what had happened, and they said send it back. Ten days later it came back with everything replaced but the scales-they even put a new D2 blade in it-all for no charge.
They now have a customer and fan for life.

Lost two Victorinox ALOX Pioneers. The first was in the back seat of a Michigan State Police cruiser on a night I'd just as soon forget. The second was at Cedar Point, somewhere under the Demon Drop. I've had the third for 20+ years. So far, so good.

Lost a Randall Made Knife in the seat of a Huey one time. Pilot kept it for me. I did a better job of securing the knife in the sheath from then on. Last year I lost my case yellow handled trapper folder out of its belt scabbard. Looked every where. Found it about 2 months later in front of the horse barn. It had been buried in the sand until a hoof kicked it up. I took oil and a brass brush to it and it came out pretty good. Sharpened it, soaked the scabbard in water to tighten it up and I was back in business.

Started EDC with a SAK, the Tinkerer, while stationed in Alaska. Carried it to RVN. Once, sitting in one of those sling seats on a Huey, with my rump about three inches off the floor, it came out of my patch pocket, and I never got it back. Told my wife what I wanted, and she sent me another. I carried that one until about 2002, when the blade had been sharpened enough that the point stood above the frame, and the red plastic had worn enough that the Swiss cross in a shield had sharp corners to it. Retired it, and got another which I still carry. Here's a picture of the one I carried for all those many years..

Well, I have a good news story. I lost a Victorinox 111mm German Army Knife in the post, bought it in April. It finally landed here just this week. My first 111mm Victorinox and very pleased with it too.
Not my own pic.

I've had a cheap Fury SS folder when I was 12. Someone stole it out of my pants in the locker room. Hours were spent loosening it up so that was a bummer.
A cheap butterfly knife was taken crossing the Canadian border. That $35 knife cost me a $125 fine.
My first fixed blade knife, a small leather handled Buck, I gave to my brother. It just wasn't all that practical to carry around.
A few Benchmades were given away to ladies in my life. I figured that's more meaningful than perfume or jewelry.
There was a cheap flea market "NATO" front opener that I can't recall the whereabouts. I always hated that knife.
