While I love my J-frame steel revolvers (I have a Model 60-14 in .357 magnum and a Model 36), I always wanted a 6 shot snubbie like the Colt Magnum Carry (in .357) or Detective Special (in .38 Special). Well, I am not made out of money, so I looked for a less expensive alternative. Hello, the Rossi 462. This is a newer edition of the 462 with the lock-up on the yoke rather than at the front of the ejector rod. The fit and finish is a ton better than the old style 462s made just 2 or 3 years ago (I had one and sold it).

It weighs in at 26 ounces and while bigger than a J-frame, it fits in holsters made for a Ruger LCR. The double action trigger pull is short (compared to S&W and Ruger standards) and not very heavy (for double action). The single action is very light. Single action accuracy was superb. I got it at a local gun store for $349 and tax, but on-line you can find it cheaper (but watch out -- some sellers are still selling off the odd versions of the 462).

I understand Rossi also makes the gun in a blued finish (Model 461)

Very nice and thanks for the photos! :)

Don't sweat the number mix up as I'm dyslexic and mix up numbers all the time. Besides you're on a S&W forum and the 642 is one of the best selling models. :D

I was shooting .38 Special out of it (125 and 130 grain jacketed and semi-jacketed) and it shot to point of aim at 7 yards (single action). I have also shot some regular 158 grain stuff in double action which grouped fairly well, but I was shooting too quickly to speak with precision (more than good enough for social work).
