Blast from the panic buying past
Hi there all, was making our local gun shop run last Tuesday and came across this one, a new in the box R 6530 Colt Sporter Lightweight bought in 1993 and was just put away. What makes me think "panic buy" was the $1221.93 price tag still on the box and the fact it never seems to have left the box since purchase. Paid the $599.00 price and lugged it home. I've heard of these called transitional "blue tag" guns made in between the partial and full ban mode models. It's a cool little rifle with it's skinny "pencil" sixteen inch barrel, mid barrel gas port with the shorty handguard and no bayonet lug. Has the A-2 sights and carrying handle and A-2 butt stock with accessory trap and "full fence" mag release button. Has the "sear block" in the gizzards and came with the riveted internal block magazine making the 20 round magazine a five shot.
The receiver marking are a bit strange as there is no AR-15 markings and under the model markings was stamped Cal .223. On the barrel it had the usual C CM 5.56 Nato and 1/7 twist stamping. It also had a letter dated November 24, 1993 stating that they were short of cleaning rods at the moment and to complete the form on the letter and mail it to them and they would send them when available.
Any hoo, boy was it dry and what was left of the factory lube was gummy and stiff, cleaned the bore and chamber and and lubed up the sticky safety and hammer pins and such till all was snappy and smooth again. NIB went away the next morning as off to the range it went and was zeroed at fifty yards for the moment, functioned just as it should haved and we will see how that one in seven twist will handle the fifty five grain ammo at one hundred yards. Attached is some free download pic's of the rifle I found on the net, too lazy to take pic's and post em I guess!
Thanks for looking and have a good week end!

Adjusted for inflation $1221.93 1993 dollars converts to $2,012.13 today.
To make a comparison of the loss, I adjust 2015 dollars into 1993 dollars. Your 2015 $599 is equivalent to $363.76 in 1993. You bought it at 30% of it's original value. That 1993 panic buy resulted in more than 70% loss for the original buyer because you know the gun store didn't pay him what you paid.

I paid $340 for mine brand new...in 1979.
Still have it. Shot it today, AAMOF. Put 20 rounds offhand at 25 yards into a group I could cover with my hand. Not match grade shooting, I call it "Minute of Rioter."

OP, that was a real steal! I would have hurt myself reaching for my wallet at that price.

I bought one just like it in 1995, a brother to that rifle made in November 1994, advertised in a local trading paper for $900. Shot it a bit in some Three Gun Matches, then traded it for a match grade M1A. It was a very popular rifle in 1995, very desirable today.
It's crazy how events drive AR-15 prices, the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, the Y2K craze, Newtown shooting, Presidential elections, etc.

$340 in 1979 = $1,114.34 in 2015.
I like to adjust for inflation to give myself a true gauge of whether or not an firearm is truly less expensive back then than today. Of course I'm not taking into account the cool factor of a 1:12 Colt AR15 SP1. That cool factor is priceless.

As a matter of fact I think I did sprain my arm a bit! A side story here as history seems to have repeated itself. Around the same time frame I wanted a new Colt AR 15 for IPSC rifle competition, the price at the time was just about the same as the Sporter, the panic was on. Evidently my favorite LGS had a live one who wanted a new Chinese Norinco "Legend" AK-47 and I had one I paid around $450-500 for at home. A even up trade was made for a new Colt Match Target H-Bar they wanted $1,200.00 for! Now it has a stable mate cousin. The H-Bar had a one in seven twist and shot eight inch "patterns" off the bench with 55gr bullet ammo at 100 yards. Called Colt and they said that was acceptable accuracy! A new SGW stainless Ultra Match barrel in one in nine fixed all that!

Bob I had a pre ban HBAR. I put a 4x12 scope on it. It was sub MOA. Sold it later, wish I'd kept it. It would be nice next to my newer Colt match target that I bought at a huge savings after the last panic buys ended back at the LGS'.

I've a pre ban ar15 and it is my most accurate semi auto rifle. Feeds just about any brass cased 223/5.56 you put in it. And very accurate. Frank

Yeah, I'd pay $1,114.34 for a brand new one today. Maybe even $1,125.
