Default Ruger MKII- STANDARD, 6" stainless LNIB??????

Went to my local pawn shop today to see if anything new was out and I ran across this older looking Ruger Box
(1980's I assume). Inside was a Stainless Ruger MKII Standard with the 6" pencil barrel and all the original paperwork and one magazine. The grips are black plastic with a black/silver eagle emblem (no red). So I asked to see it and looked pretty clean, no obvious damage or abuse to the feed ramps. It does not have adjustable sights (dovetail w/ insert). He was asking $300 out the door and I passed due to my ignorance of this particular model. Can anyone here help me out here? I see these things everywhere but always walk past them without a second thought. Anyone own the MKII? Is the price right? Advantages of this one over new production other than the safety lock mechanisms?

I never had a tapered barrel. I know many prefer them for the lightness and way they handle. Bought my first Mk2 in the mid 80's. Government Target Model. Put thousands of rounds through it and then foolishly sold it. I had the chance to purchase this one about 15 years ago from a coworker. Had 50 rounds through it. Needless to say I didn't hesitate.

Can't tell you a thing about the new ones except I wouldn't own one. If you like the tapered barrel I'd be all over it versus a new gun.

I've got a blued MKII target (w/adjustable sights) with the 6" tapered barrel. Family favorite! I've shot bull barrels and much prefer my tapered for balance.
The big difference is no mag disconnect. There's other small differences I can't remember right now.
$300 out the door sounds fair to me, especially for a stainless.

$300 ain't bad. As far as I'm concerned the MKII's are the best in the Ruger line of semi-auto .22 handguns.

I've owned several of that very model and still own two other MK II's. The MK II's are some of my all time favorite .22 target pistols.

My 2 cents: That was a great pistol at a very decent price. Buy it , shoot 20,000+ rounds through it and then give it to the grand kids or go get $300 back. Accuracy and dependability never goes out of demand.

Not a bad price.I have a pair of tapered barrel guns from the 50s that I prefer over my mark III bull barrel. They balance nicely.

$300 out the door sounds fair to me, especially for a stainless.

Differences between the MK II and III are:
-mag release is on the bottom of MK II, on the side of the MK III
-MK III has loaded chamber indicator
-MK II and III us a slightly different mag (but equally available)
-MK IIIs come drilled and tapped for an optic base. Only the competition models of the MK II are D&T. Mounts are available for both though.
- MK III has mag disconnect (and more complex trigger as a result)
Personally, I prefer the MK II but do own both.

Here is a picture of one of my "never sell" MK IIs.

Mark II Rugers are disappearing fast. Buy it.

I found a NIB Mark II Government Target last year. Paid 399.00 for it. I would have paid $500 because they are growing scarce.

$300 is a good price for a standard.

Default HOW DO YOU MEASURE SIX INCHES?

The "standard" tapered bbl, fixed sight MKll has a 4& change inch barrel. Maybe it was an option?, But I've never seen a 6" bbl that wasn't an adjustable sight target model. MKll Gov't models get my vote as best, but sold my 2nd for a 4" target MKll bull bbl. 300$ sounds too high for a standard model used. With some time looking you could find a target mdl for that, or close after taxes. The MKlll's also have that plastic loaded chamber indicator that Me and others don't need or care for, many remove them entirely, I thought it was to help them cool faster & get rid of fouling, but nope, just to lose some plastic that may fail sometime. Some prefer the MKlll's, TEHO.

If as you describe it, its way underpriced. The Mark IIs were the best of the marks, and the SS the best of the IIs. If I saw it I would buy it in a heartbeat, and I already own several of each variety.

$300 for a Mk II 6" stainless Standard is a very good price if the gun is in very good condition.

I'll double check the barrel length of the gun in question to confirm 6". But the Blue Book does say they were available in both 4.75" & 6". If I'm mistaken and it turns out it was a 4.75" does that make difference in price?

I'd prefer the shorter barrel actually just for easy of carrying afield.

I have a 6 7/8" stainless Mk II Target, very nice.

Isn't someone here going to say something about "pencil barrel"?

Default Ruger pistol

OP, the Mk II is a good pistol that will serve you well. I have a MK II bull bl tgt, as well as a MK I tapered bl and a hvy BL tgt.
The Mk I tapered 4 3/4" pistol has been my hunting companion since the 70's. I installed a Clark trigger in it in the 70's and competed with it in bullseye as well.
Last year at an informal tgt shoot with some other fellas that had S&W 41's, high std's and Colt's, the little Ruger proved what it was capable of. I was invited to participate in the shoot this year on the condition that I leave the Ruger at home.

I have a MkI Tapered barrel & a MkII bull barrel. About five years ago these were dirt cheap used. One was so lead fouled it couldn't function. After disassembly and cleaning they look like brand new. They were $150 each. One is a red eagle. Today $300 is a good price. Seen them higher.

More guns for the grandson.

I also think the MKII is the best of the series. I'd have paid the $300, they ain't making them anymore. Joe

I don't see the Kmk-4 as often as I do the Kmk-6, but with the box that's a pretty good price. I hope you went back and bought it.

So here is the deal, I went back in today and placed the gun on their free layaway deal. I'm currently chasing a good deal on my 2nd favorite rifle ever made (A Winchester Model 75...second only to the model 52). I'll grab the MK II and give it a try, if I decide against keeping it I'll post it up here first. I appreciate all the help.

Ruger Mark II , slab side , gold trigger, red medallions. I believe it is a 40th Anniversary model.

You're wrong on the last, save for limited production of the 5.25-inch barrel model. The Bull Barrel normally has a 5.5-inch barrel, heavier than the scarce 5.25-inch one.

I wrote an article on the Ruger .22 autos (American Handgunner, Nov-Dec., 1980, I think) and in research, found a South African correspondent who had one of the 5.25-inch ones. He'd shot some puff adders with it. I've handled just one and it felt very good in the hand.

I favor the stainless bull bbl., and mine is a MK II. I prefer it to earlier or later Marks. However, the standard Target model has a tapered barrel of 6 7/8th's -inches. Other barrels have been produced.

A MK II stainless with six-inch barrel with box and acc. is definitely worth $300, if in nice shape. I believe that El Paso Saddlery makes holsters for it.

When I divorced, my Ruger MK I Bull Barrel .22 was the only item of mine that my wife wanted. I swapped it to her for a table that I needed, and eventually replaced it with a MK II stainless model.

I think the Ruger .22 auto pistols are one of the best values in guns.
