Deciding on new gun
So, my birthday is coming up in March. It's time for a new gun! Only problem is I'm so indecisive i can't decide on what to get. The options are, a Vepr hunting rifle with a 23" barrel in 7.62x54r sitting in a IWD SVD stock with a POSP scope.
Or a Smith and Wesson 460XVR with an 8 3/8" barrel, which later on down the road will be getting a Deltapoint or an RMR. The comparison in my mind, The Vepr will be for long distance plinking 100+yards, the ammo is extremely cheap, but i only have access to a 100yard range at the moment and the cheap ammo means I'd have to clean it constantly. The 460XVR is a magnum load but can be used with 45LC which is still inexpensive i can shoot it out to 100 yards on the range and, i can also hunt with it since its straight walled and the barrel is 5"+. Also if i go on the route of the XVR i will start to reload.

7.62x54 has gone way up in price. Talking about $80 in the last year. Surplus is corrosive AND because it's coming from different countries manufactured at different times you will have a big spread in accuracy. One year or lot number from country A may be great but the next year's may not be or another country's may not be. It's not going to be completely off just you may constantly get different POA POI and MOA will change. You can buy commercial ammo made by PPU. It's reloadable and none corrosive and more consistent. Price is about $15/box of 20 or slightly less. Expect $13 - $15 a box.
I own several rifles in that caliber. It's fun to shoot but I've been buying ammo since the time it was $50 for 440 rounds so I'm well stocked

Where are you finding .45 Colt ammunition that's "inexpensive?" I suppose it may be considered so in comparison to .460, but in my area it's running close to a buck a round. Fortunately, I reload.

In my area its running .40-50 cents a round, cheaper if you buy it in bulk. Cheap lead casted plinking ammo is all i need. The most expensive I've seen it was ~.72 cents a round. Which i figured the 460XVR will be my next gun so i will also be into reloading, soon.

I owe me three gifts, 65yo birthday, retirement, Christmas. Been retired since 52 but now I'm 65 on s/s.
I'm thinking a few 1911's, another m29 & m57?
I wanted a Saiga in 7.62x54r in a Sporter version but they never made it.
