Default Why are 9mm carbines so popular?

I mean, I know why I like my 3...

* Affordable prices for my 3 carbines
* Compact package
* Affordable ammo
* Fun and easy to shoot up to 100 yards without optics.

So I gotta ask - why do you guys like em?
And why do some people pay the outrageous prices for some of the AR looking ones?

You forgot about sharing ammo - and in some cases magazine (like my Camp 9 and M59) - between your carbine and your side arm.

Good question. I got a Model A Uzi back in 1980. It was like carrying around a concrete block just to shoot the puny 9mm. I put it up in it's box with all the stuff that came with it. Sold it 5 years ago for a fortune. So, I guess there is some merit to buying something big to shoot something little.

I have a Marlin Camp 9, got a great deal at a pawn shop and it was like new. I changed out the buffer and recoil spring and it shoots great, have an inexpensive 4x mini scope mounted and it is sighted at 50 yards.
A carbine length barrel in 9mm turns the little cartridge into 357 magnum handgun power.
What's not to like about that?

Beretta CX-4 9mm carbine.................

and Beretta 92s use the same magazines. 15-30rds
fast fist size groups out to 50-70 yds.
9mm picks up a lot of FPS and muzzle energy from a 16" barrel
Overall length of about 29 inches.

Great SHTF/home defense (w/light) weapon.

Why was the H&K MP-5 so popular for so long?????

You know I actually thought about getting the stock for my first 995TS, that makes it look like the cx4 storm.
But I just like the way it looks as it is, better.

I've been a fan of the Beretta 92 since the late 80s..... so I grabbed an early CX-4 that took 92mags ..........and some 20rd mags......
later added a small Bushnell TRS 25 red dot......
a butt pouch that can hold 2 extra 15-20 rd mags and .....
last year a Streamlight TLR-? weapons light(300 lumens) mounted on the rail under the barrel.

Last time I was at the range a guy next to me was shooting an AR and a Marlin Camp 9. He shoots a few rounds with the Marlin and the gun locks up solid with a live round in the chamber. The Range Officer doesn't know anything about it and they can't clear it. The guy asks me and I took a look. You could see the buffer all disintegrated like powder all over the trigger area and action. I told him what it was. Gun was in excellent condition and the guy stated he had owned it for years. I offered him $400 on the spot for it and explained they were a sought after item. The guy was just about to bite when the Range Officer tells him he could get a lot more on Gun Broker. The same dope who knew nothing about it a few minutes earlier. I thought I had scored. Love to have a 9mm Carbine.

Amongst my shooting buddies, they have the 9mm carbines
because after I make them feel bad with a S&W revolver against
their various hi- cap 9mms. They can shoot a few rounds and
have a decent target to show. They don't say which 9mm it
was shot with.

I like to go old school for all the same reasons. It is nice to have a long gun and handgun in the same caliber. I prefer my handguns in calibers beginning with .4 so here is a couple of model 1873s.

Did anybody mention 9mm rifles are so easy to suppress? The flash hider on this AUG is threaded the same as an older Gemtech muzzle can. Lots of accurate, quiet fun.

My range used to be a beaver-flooded little valley full of dead trees - natures's own reactive targets - over a variety of distances. Good stuff.

One reason some people like the 9mms in their ARs is because there are some indoor, and I suppose maybe some outdoor, ranges that allow pistol caliber carbines and not .223 etc.

I do not know that the 9mm is that much cheaper to shoot, boxes of 50 FMJ brass case are up to $14 something per at Walmart whereas M193 type ball brass case has been $7 for 20. For a while the Peerfecta in a 50rd box was $15.

The M193 ball probably edges out a 9mm 115gr FMJ in terminal effectiveness, even at carbine velocities, while seemingly offering reduced penetration of walls and such. Thus the M4 type carbine and the like began to replace MP5s and other misc 9mm subguns.

Someone or another was making an M1 carbine in 9mm. I think it takes Beretta mags.

What I would like is a Hi Point type carbine with a magazine housing forward of and seperate from the pistol grip that used either Sten mags or Glock mags....and is designed around a $350 price point....

Anyone with an engineering background feel free to design one.

The old cowboy philosophy. The same round in your rifle and pistol is more convenient and economical. If both share the same magazine, all that much better.

I like sub-machine guns. but I don't earn sub-machine gun money, so I get sub-machine gun semiautomatic clones (Uzi carbine, MP5 clone, SUB2000, RRA CAR15 9mm). I want a Sterling and Sten semi clone too.

Not limited to 9mm. I have a Thompson M1 semi, and M3A1 (Grease gun) semi clone, lever actions in 357, 44, and 32-20.

I just love them. Great range toys.

Default They are the most fun......

After a nice revolver 9mm carbines are just crazy fun to shoot. Sort of reminds me of a BB, pellet, .22 days but with a serious round. Since you will probably pull the trigger a lot, the expense of the ammo is a strong consideration also.

I too really like carbines, though I only have one in 9MM. As mentioned it is easy to supress

I have always been a fan of the lever action carbine and have them in 22LR, 357 Magnum, 41 Magnum and 45 Long Colt. Blue, brass and stainless lever guns all sit in my gun cabinet next to the bed

My two favorite carbines are chambered in 357SIG and 10MM Auto. Either one is capable of delivering 30 rounds on target in roughly 2 seconds.

Can I sneak in my SxS as a 12 gauge carbine? OK, I know in reality it is a coach gun, but it is a hoot to shoot. Pull both triggers and 18, .33 caliber(00 buck) projectiles are released simultaneously and you better believe that you remember doing it

I am building a 45ACP integrally suppressed AR style carbine right now. Pictures will be ready in about 3-4 months

Thumbs up

I've had Marlin Camp 9 carbines since they were introduced along about 1985 IIRC. Why? No serious purpose at all, Just Fun! I tell people they kick up more dust when I miss BTW, chronographed velocities from the carbine length barrels can be quite sprightly, especially the +P+ stuff

Guess I am odd man out on this one. Didn't know that pistol caliber handguns were still that popular. Since the birth of the cheap AR, I never see anyone shooting the pistol caliber carbines anymore at the range.

In my part of IL, the closest outdoor range is across the border in Wisconsin. When I go there, I'll choose to shoot the rifle caliber's all day long. Problem is the winter. Indoor ranges near me don't allow rifle caliber cartridges on their pistol lanes. The indoor ranges that do have a rifle range have issues too. One indoor rifle range facility is less than 25 yards, making it pointless to me. The other has a 75 yard indoor rifle range, but it's still not fun. It's $30/hr. You can't shoot off hand. You must shoot from a seated/bench position. While not ideal, indoor pistol ranges average $20/hr. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but it's better than $30/hr for a horrible rifle experience.

I know. I could shoot a .22lr firearm on a pistol range. The cost/availability of .22lr ammo for the past few years, soured me on .22lr firearms. I went from owning 6 to 2. I also don't get the same jollies shooting .22lr rimfire v.s. center fire.

I can't wait until Spring hit's it's stride. I can head up to the outdoor range. The cost to shoot all day long until your ammo runs out or the facility closes is $17.

Think the Kriss Vector is is really cool looking. But the price then makes me say... Oh look, a $1400 -$1800 dollar semi auto carbine.
Not so much cool anymore.

You know I really wanted one of these. But I've heard a lot of hit or miss reviews on the Chiappa's performance lately. And I saw it for myself at our local range about a month ago.
Guy a couple stations down from me had one lock up on and couldn't get it going again. He was cussing an awful lot and wasn't accepting help from a couple of other guys around him. It was entertaining.

Around here you probably see more 9, 40, 45 carbines at our local outside range, than you see AR's.

Suppressed, compact, cheap to fire, durable. 5 inch Colt with Silencerco octane.

11.5 inch AR-15 for scale.

I wonder....Polymer AR lower with stock runs about $130....shouldn't be that much more to make/mold/design with a block allowing 9mm mags....might be cheaper to build that way than retrofit? That would make for an easy off the shelf receiver.

Then for an upper what amounts to a steel tube with a 16.5" barrel....dispense with any sort of complicated gas system and keep it as a straight blowback in 9mm. I wonder if that upper could be done at a $200 to $250 price point?

I haven't followed 9mm ARs, does anything like that exist?

They are a lot of fun to shoot. Especially when they belong to someone else.

Marlin Camp Rifle goes with my 6906, Kel Tec Sub 2000 goes with my Glock 17. Marlin Lever Action (I know, it's .357/.38) goes with my revolvers. I like having a rifle and a pistol sharing calibers and magazines.

Some time in the past German engineers recognized the 9 as reliable carbine round. And it also fed the Lugers, Walthers and High Powers with the same little 9 mm round.

So I guess .22 rifles make no sense either?

Me too. A Camp Nine in the bedroom safe that takes the 915 mags from Oct-April, then a Rossi .357 takes it's place when I dust the revolvers off for the "outdoor" months. Makes range trips all the more fun, too.

Count me in the "not worth it" camp.

9mm full-auto is AWESOME. The MP5 is a laser and keeping an entire mag on a body target at 100m is easy.

9mm semi-auto rifle (legal rifle i.e. 16" barrel) --- 1, you're beyond the sweet spot in 9mm barrel length (8"-12"); 2, if you're restricted to semi auto only from a 16" barrel, for Heaven's sake move up to a rifle caliber! If you want a training rifle, go .22LR. Yes, I know it's hard to find but I can easily buy 500 round boxes for ~$32. Try getting 500 9mm for that price.

I find the recoil impulse of 9mm blowback to be worse than 5.56mm.

The only platform where it starts to make sense is an SBR, particularly suppressed. But now you're talking about $400 in stamps and all the complications of NFA items.

I see just about zero utility in the "cowboy" method of matching pistol and rifle ammo in the modern age. True rifle cartridges are so far beyond pistol ones in capability that it's just better to specialize. Just look to the military; they pay a lot of attention to common caliber among like weapons (rifle, pistol, machinegun, etc) but about zero cross-platform.

Not trying to get all mall ninja on everyone. It's cool to have "fun guns" particularly when you have casual shooters as friends or family. But at least for me and mine, we'll stick to rifle cartridges in rifles and pistol cartridges in pistols. I broke that rule with an AK pistol but with a brace it runs right up to the SBR line without crossing it. If not for the brace I wouldn't have bought one.

I'd really like to have one in a M1 carbine configuration. Nice long barrel, classic looks, inexpensive ammo. what more could you want.

They are cheap and fun to shoot!

My Beretta CX4 carbine and 92FS

My CMMG MK9LE with a Slidefire stock and a 1st Gen G17, of course these use different mags.

I have $434.95 invested in my AR 9mm. Purchased a complete 9mm kit less the lower from PSA for $399.00 shipped and assembled it on an Anderson lower I paid $35.95 for. Shoots great and for the price I couldn't pass it up.
