Very pleased with this non-permanent modification to my son's 10/22. We had a decent, inexpensive scope on it but he told me that he has really warmed up to shooting with the iron sights I have on my 90's AR-15. He say's they're "more fun".
You've probably seen these from Tech-SIGHTS:
I installed them last week. There are two models for the 10/22 - one having a single rear aperture which is adjustable for elevation and the other having a dual flip aperture on the rear. Both aperture holes on the flip model are about the same size as the small USGI 300-800 hole but are set at differing elevations.
We chose the TSR100 w/dual flip aperture because it has the ability to instantly toggle elevations and the rear sight aperture itself sits lower between the sides of the rear sight base.
The front sight post is adjusted for elevation like an AR but it has 5 detents instead of 4 and the post is thinner. Click adjustment on both front and rear are about 1/4"@25yd.
Up until now, the only alteration we did to the Ruger besides the scope was adding a rubber butt pad to serve as a stock extension. After installing these new iron sights, I removed it and put the original thin plate back on to bring the rear-sight eye-relief where it needs to be for a sight picture more-or-less identical to the AR-15.
Didn't take my son but a few shots to get the low aperture zero'd at 50yd. He much prefers the new iron sight setup to the glass optic.
Will be shooting more paper later to see where the other aperture hits at farther distances. Supposedly the long range selection has a 4MOA difference from the short range and the manufacturer states that with the one marked 0-2 hitting at 50yd, the other is supposed to be on at 100yd (assuming w 40gr regular ammo).
Anyway... here are the pics:
