Talking Any Browning HP fans out there ?

I have always loved the look and feel of the Browning HP. I sold my first one and regretted it immediately after a couple years later I bought another one that was the same.

Browning HP with a millet sight package and Greg Spegel Grips

Definitely an HP fan, always liked the look of the gun. One night I grabbed my wife's one to see why my dog was going nuts and as I headed out was surprised at just how good it felt! Hers had Uncle Mikes grips and the mag safety removed. Nice.

I've posted before.....if I carried cocked & locked it would be my Mk III with millet front sight 15rd Mec-gar magazines and Spegel grips........

the best looking adjustable sights in my opinion is a inlay-ed rear S&W k-frame

I have 3 at this time. First one is a 1959 Browning badged in 85-90% condition from holster wear. The second is a early '50s FN E-series in 80-85% condition. The last is my favorite, a late '40s FN in 50% condition that has a 4.5lb trigger. Picked it up online for $275. This one will be the "custom". I plan to send the slide to Heinie for a set of plain Slant Pro sights. I will work on the slight pitting issues myself and then get a local guy to do a blue job, or maybe see if I can find someone local to hard chrome it.

I really like the lines on the older internal extractor HP's with the takedown scallop.

I have an older commercial and one of the newer matte finish ones. My only complaints are the small sights and controls. I looked at having Novak sights put on the newer one and it would cost more than I paid for the gun.

I bought my first HP new in 1985. Had Cylinder & Slide add sights and some other stuff. Traded it a few years later with regrets. I picked up a very clean 1968 vintage with original box a year or so ago. This one stays as found which is fine by me. Great gun.

Here's my IDF trade in after I had it blasted then I refinished it. Did it myself in my own back yard.

Another view with different grips:

I was given 2 by my father in law. Both are accurate, reliable, and easy to carry in a Horseshoe Leather Small of the Back holster. I carried one for a couple of years. I really find them hard to beat in 9mm. If I wasn't so stuck on 45s and revolvers I would probably be carrying one now. Anyone that carries a Browning HP is well armed.

In about 1972 I swapped a 2" square butt model 10 and $40 boot for my Belgium HP brand new. It has the Browning adjustable sight. Back then I was in L.E. and the only real 9mm was the mdl 39 and the 59 had just came available.

This one weapon is perhaps my favorite. Being an almost exclusive revolver man this one of the few auto I have hung on to thru the years.
It is still a classic handgun.

Also it's the only weapon I fired in the line of duty and it performed just like it was intended to do.

The BHP is my favorite SA auto, with the Model 39 being my favorite DA auto.

A couple years ago, there was a thread on the 1911, and I posted this just for fun. I know it's not true, I was just having fun.

This is from 1977, and the stocks are coco bolo. On my "grail gun" list, it was at the top:

Have three, an Israeli surplus in 9mm and two in .40SW. Never undergunned with an HP.

I have a 69C series that is too nice to mess with. I can't see the factory sights very well so I don't shoot it. I would not give it up though, it is a classic Browning. Everybody should have at least one.

I also have a 1969 C. Definitely has seen some use and probably wasn't stored the best at one time but it is a very good shooter and I have no desire to ever part with it.

Picked up three in the last three months. First was a HP Practical, sitting in the LGS used case for eight months. No visible use, with box and 2 mags. Second was a MkIII that I bought as a project gun, after the original user butchered the sear pin hole trying to remove the mag safety. Had it Cerakoted. The last was one I bought Thursday at another LGS; .40 S&W Vigilante, blue finish, and apparently NIB. I owned a couple of .40 S&W models a few years back, and foolishly let them go. These I won't.

I've got two. It'd be tough for me to pick a favorite from among them or one of my 1911's.

Default Serpico - 1973 - starring Al Pacino as Frank Serpico

Shhhh......don't tell anyone I admitted this, but I grew up in the New York City in which Detective Frank Serpico did his best to clean up the then corrupt NYPD. We all have stories....

Anyway, when this movie came out it was a major hit, especially in NYC. This goes back to the days of the revolver being typically in every cop's holster, Serpico goes to a gunshop because he's very much in fear for his life and knows he needs additional firepower. He selects a Browning Hi-Power and the conversation goes something like this:

Quote:
Seller: That gun takes a 14 shot clip. You expecting an army?

Serpico: No. Just a division.
(c) Serpico 1973 Sidney Lumet, Director

From that very moment I knew that someday I would have to have a Browning Hi-Power. My first grail gun! Totally out of reach for a young man with a wife, baby, and in law school, so it took me 40 years but, yessirreebob, I have always been a fan of the BHP.

Actually, when I bought my modern production BHP (Belgium/Portugal) I was in the process of transitioning my collection to a degree and I liquidated a number of guns to acquire a few new ones that I wanted more. Mostly, I recall selling all but one of my military surplus rifles, a vintage Model 97 Winchester shotgun, and two Norinco 1911 .45s. It personally amused me to replace two 1911s with a BHP. There were other acquisitions more in line with this Forum, like a 2.5" Model 19, another grail gun for me

Last month I took a combat shooting course using that BHP - it performed wonderfully well and made me look soooo good!!!

When I was younger and perhaps more impulsive, I bought a BHP and quickly traded it in, because the safety was not particularly easy or quick to move to the off position. I should have kept the gun and had C&S take care of it. It seemed to have the bore axis closer to the forearm axis than any other gun I had handled, thus was quicker on followup shots than any other gun of similar power.

A few years ago, someone around here was selling a nearly new (perhaps actually new) BHP Mk2 for a reasonable price. The safety was easily moved and a bit larger, right out of the box. It fits my hand just about as easily as a 1911, which is a good thing. It's not quite as easy to detail disassemble as a 1911, but it is even easier to field strip. Almost needless to say, I bought it, and I'm not selling it.

The Browning High Power is my favorite handgun - hands down. It feels better in hand than any handgun I have ever held. Everyone I know who has held one says the same.

I have a 1993 MkIII, and could I only have one gun, this would probably be it.

Still have my Belgian that I purchased new in 1972 for $114.00......Only thing I did was add Millett adjustable sights many years ago....Don't shoot it much anymore...It sleeps in its original Browning zippered case along with its hand book...........Back when I did shoot it a lot.........It was HELL with Juras's SUPERVEL AMMO......Thats all I shot when it was available.

I've "settled" for the FEG exact clone, Israeli surplus and parkerized, that I picked up for just over $200 a few years back. At times I have considered finding an upgrade, and if I do find a sweet priced deal, I will. But since the FEG functions just fine, I haven't been in a big hurry to do so.

I don't have huge hands, and it's the only double-stack that works for me. And, it feels better to me than any single-stack.

I can't think of one handgun that I've ever handled that felt better than the BHP.

I guess I'm just a wannabe. The first handgun I ever shot was a HP and I have wanted one since. The second was a 1911, and I have wanted one of those, too. Just waiting for the confluence of the necessary elements: me, the gun and the money in the same place at the same time.

In the meantime, I have an FEG that looks like a HP from a distance, but up close, it's not even close, and it has DA/SA guts to boot. I have a CZ75, which reminds some people of an HP, and which is all the gun I need, but if the HP comes my way, I'll still take it.

The FEG Hi-Power is a great gun. I've seen a couple other copies, and the FEG beats them all. The "blued" finish of most of today's production handguns get is terrible (IMHO), but the FEG has a bluing way above most of today's pistols. Most people don't realize that FEG (shortened for simplicity) has been around since the late 1800's.

I've had two, I sold my last one to my neighbor when I bought my FN. I just got to see it again recently, and it reminded me what a great looking pistol it is. I never had a single malfunction with either one, just like an FN.

Here's a Practical in .40, made in '94, I believe, shown with a Buckmark.

And an FEG clone (P9) from Hungary. Age...unknown.

I like the CZ, and think that it would be where HP's would have gotten if they had continued to evolve.

Change the word "couple" years to "too many" years and that is my BHP story too.

I traded my first handgun, a S&W 915 (gulp!) and $200 on a 9mm Practical model when my 1st son was born- a present to myself for all my hard work! Pretty good trade I think.

I grabbed another along the way, standard model, and have also since rectified my earlier mistake and grabbed another 915!

A Hi-Power and S&W 39 are the 2 pistols that feel the best in my hand. Can't really say why, as they're vastly different animals. I think it's the length (?) front to back of the grip that makes it work so well.

I own three; a Practical, a Mark III and a Capitan. Great pistols all. By the way, the late Stephen A. Camp's website on HiPowers is still up and running. Check it out for some great information. There may even be some of his books on HiPowers still available there:

As I posted above I have a couple of Mk IIIs......I had passed on the earlier guns because of the small sight and safety.....and stuck with revolvers and a 1911 or two.

The FEGs were good guns with better sights and safety IMO.... I had two off and on over the years.... should have hung on to them..... but when the Mk IIIs hit the market...... I upgraded to the real thing!

The Browning High Power is one of my favorite pistols! I have owned and shot many over the years, this is the one that I have kept. I bought this in the late 80's. I don't shoot it as much as I used to, I should take it to the range next time I go!

Like others, I sold one and had to go buy another. This is mine, wearing Esmeralda smooths ...

Silver chrome 9mm and Mark III .40. The BPH's fit the hand very well and are fun to shoot!

As a rule of thumb: Never sell a Browning High Power!
You WILL regret it.

Default If I had to make a quick choice and pick one gun in the old days

it would be a 9mm Browning HP... I shot one overseas in the old PPC matches, and it worked with any ammo I had. I disconnect the magazine safety and got a ported Barsto barrel. The trigger is not the best in the world but the magazine capacity and ease of waste band carry made it perfect for personal protection in the 1970 and 80's. I don't have the Browning anymore but if anyone wants a slightly used ported barrel, let me know.

I have five or six of them laying around but only have a pic of one. It's all scratched up but it shoots good. It's one of my four Sunday rotation guns. Momma always said dress your best on Sunday.

I have had three BHP's over the years. My first one was a 74C series that I unfortunately sold off to fund the purchase of a SIG P226. My second one was a .40 caliber version that I just could not get comfortable with (I now wish I had kept that one and converted it to 9mm).

My third (And current) BHP is a 73C series that I traded a SIG P232 for. I really liked that SIG, but I couldn't pass up the deal. I swapped out the stocks, installed a ring hammer from an Argentine BHP and also had a new ambi safety installed:

My Canadian Inglis HiPower is a favorite for my trips to the range. The 500 meter tangent sight is just dead on. It is hard to miss at that range. Of course, I might be stretching just a bit. The shoulder stock does help.

Default My two T Series HP's...

These are my two High Powers. The one on the left is a 1968 unfired T Series. I have the Browning rug it came in and the original red and yellow box of Winchester 9mm that was purchased with it. The one on the right is my shooter, great condition, just not unfired. Love those High Powers!

Great weapons, have two, a 9mm Practical and 40 MKIII, blue. Told a friend he needed a BHP, so took him to a show. Went to the first table that had one and thrust it into his hands. His eyes lit up and he said, Now I know what you mean! He purchased it immediately. Other guns have better triggers, but none are a High Power!

I carried this German Pistole 640p (FN HiPower made for the Wehrmacht in 1943) for the entire 32 months I spent in Vietnam as helciopter crew chief/door gunner. I had to leave it there with another guy in my platoon and forty-six years later he tracked me down to return it:

NICE! And having one with that kind of history and a "cool" story behind it makes it that much more special!
