Got a gator duckbill attachmunt the other day. This rem 870 that I grabbed last week was prepped for the REMCHOKE and came with a breacher attachment.

If youre not familiar with the duckbill, it was a choke developed for the u.s. Navy seals in Vietnam. The duckbill was welded to the end of an Ithaca model 37 and the inner diameter was flattened in an oval shape.

Designed for use with #4 buckshot it would flatten the pattern and elongate it rather than delivering a round pattern.

One of the original SEAL team members was a big proponent of these and said that he could hit every man in a sampan with the first shot.

Admitted this is a kind of historical novelty, but I wanted it and it definitely would break up a group of something...

It's supplied with a briley choke tube that goes into the barrel and then you apply red loktite to the exposed threads and screw the gator on to the proper alignment. Then you can quickly remove the entire assembly by unscrewing it in a few seconds.

It does exactly what it says it does. At 15 yards it throws a crazy *** horizontal pattern about 3 1/2 feet wide and a foot tall.

So with 2 3/4" shells that's 27 pellets of #4 buck...or with 3 inchers youre up to 41 pellets.

I think I need one for dove hunting. i'm always knocking off tail feathers. lee

A number of things have been done over the years to alter the characteristics of shot patterns, including stringing shot together.

My only thought is what exactly is this for, considering the threats likely to be faced by a private citizen?

It's for engaging multiple or fast moving targets.

In the days of olden, they used to just run a wedge shaped piece of steel into the muzzle to get the "duck bill". I guess that with the screw in chokes, available nowadays, all you have to do is buy a choke. It definitely ain't something new.......been around for a number of years pre-dating Vietnam........

I've seen reference to ww2 era marines hammering the barrel flat

I think H&K had a "riot gun" with some sort of a "box pattern" choke back in the '80's. I'm too lazy to look it up, something like "MK512" or somesuch. Joe
