I realized lately there is a hole in my gun collection, that being a magazine fed semi-auto rifle. I like AR-15's and AK's, but the trim lines of the Ruger Mini's are appealing. They also have peep sights which work good for my aging eyes, AK sights don't work good for me, too short of a sight radius. The stainless steel construction of the Mini 30 is nice as well.

So, I decided to go ahead and order a Stainless Mini 30. A week later I had it in my hands, today I spent a very pleasant morning sighting it in. The rifle was 100 percent reliable with a variety of ammo I ran through it, PPU soft point, Tula FMJ, and Federal American Eagle FMJ. After sighting it in, I did an accuracy comparison with the ammo I had.

Now, since id don't have a shooting bench yet (I'll build one later this Summer) my shooting was done from the sitting position at 75 yards. I have owned Mini 14's in the past, so I had low expectations of fine accuracy from this rifle, servicable field accuracy for a utility rifle is what I want, and the Mini 30 delivered that. My best effort was with PPU soft point ammo, probably 3" or so:

As the rifle heated up, group size grew. It didn't really like Tula ammo, definately didn't like it through a hot barrel:

I'm sure If I benched the rifle properly the accuracy results would be better, but I'm happy with it "As Is". A sturdy, trouble free rifle...

I've got the same gun. I tried sticking a red dot on it and finally took it off. I do just fine out to 100 yards with the stock peep sights. I don't know if it is just me but I have found anything but Ruger mags to not feed reliably.

Very nice gun, great for home defense. Congrats.

I just bought a used Mini 30 stainless a few weeks ago. Due to a bad arthritic wrist, I put the gun in an Archangel pistol grip stock we had at the shop. I got the stock for about half price. I'm waiting for a red dot sight, so I haven't shot it since putting it in the stock. My other Mini 30 has a factory stock and a Leupold PigPlex scope. It is plenty accurate for its intended purpose. They are good, solid, reliable rifles in a caliber with plenty of power inside their intended range.

Most of the negative comments about the Mini 30 date from earlier models. From what I can tell, the 580/581 series is a big improvement. My blued/plastic version with the 16.5" heavy barrel will hit a 4" steel plate at 100 yds. from the prone position all day long with my handloads (124 grain Hornady soft points). Short and light. Easy to clean. Have never had a failure to fire or eject. The 30 cal round hits pretty hard.

The one I mentioned above was in in a Archangel stock. Between the extra weight and the pistol grip it really seemed to help with the recoil. I think you will like it.
