Here's the small and fast - my .30 caliber Luger. Its a 1920 commercial model made by DWM between the wars when the Germans were kinda playing by the rules of the Treaty of Versailles. It is the most common and least collectible of the bajillion varieties of Lugers out there. It is all original though, and it works great.
The ammo in the green box is stuff my buddy found at a gun show. Its a mix of FMJ and JHP, maybe factory, maybe reloads. It all shot fine, with a huge muzzle flash and enough oomph to work the toggle with gusto. The other stuff is Fiocchi 93 grain JSP, stubby little things with lots of exposed lead that also worked fine, with less drama.
I remember a story from one of Elmer Keith's books where he witnessed a Sheriff shoot a cowboy in the back with his new .30 caliber Luger. Maybe it was this guy.
The cowboy was unimpressed and turned and shot the lawman dead with his Colt SAA, chambered in a more manly caliber. He then set his affairs in order and died sometime later.
I don't doubt EK's story, but that was one tough cowboy. These loads aren't pipsqueaks.
Fat and slow were the 200 grain Super Police loads I keep in my old Detective Special. I shoot the carry loads once in a while and replace them from my dwindling supply of Westerns. True to form, these guys shot high since they spend a while in the recoiling barrel before jogging to the target. I shot five into one raggedy hole at 15 yards, then remembered I had one more and of course tweaked it high a tad. This is with a 6 o'clock hold. As Babe's owner says, That'll do, pig. That'll do.
So here are two loads at the top of nobody's best ammo list, that will still carry the mail. I like 'em.
