3. model3S&W naturally associated the number three with the 19th century big bore top break he named himself after but in my observation Mark III is more often used as short hand for each of two very different guns, the Ruger Mark III .22 pistol and the millions of WWI SMLE No.1 Mark III .303 rifles.

6. Matching 6 with the .30-06 cartridge is fine but it is not a good identifier for the Model 1903 Springfield rifle.

#16 for a varmint rifle? Real men associate 16 with the navy's 16/45 & 16/50 rifles.

8. (already suggested by rwsmith) 8 mm Lebel, the world's first smokeless powder cartridge. It made all other countries' rifles obsolete.
8. (a better known cartridge) 8x57 mm Mauser, the kraut's cartridge through two world wars. 8x57 was without doubt the most widely used military cartridge in the world for 50 years.
8. 8 mm Remington Magnum, my old elk rifle.
