Remington Model 30 Express

Ran across this unusual rifle today, a Remington Model 30 Express. Built on the Pattern 1917 Enfield action, this was Remington's first post-WWI attempt at a commercial bolt action rifle. Most were in 30-06, but I bought this because of the very unusual caliber - it's a 7mm Mauser. I always had a soft spot for the 1917 action anyway as that's the first rifle I hunted big game with. Think maybe I'll try this one out on antelope this Fall.

Looks like a Weaver K 2.5 on top of the action.

I bought one of those when I was 14 years old. Mine was all original in super condition. I paid an unheard of $165 for it. It was a 30 Springfield 1906 as the 30-06 was originally called. I carried it with me when I ran away from home at 16 and ended up in Alaska. Carried it back to Alaska 4 years later when I went up to work on the pipeline. After retuning I gifted it back to the man I had bought it from. In all the miles I carried it, I only shot 2 deer, one bear, a coyote, 3 flying ravens and a few snowshoe hares. Beautifully built rifles from an era when gunmakers took pride in their work.

It's a Lyman Alaskan 2.5x.

Looks like it could be a Model 30-S Express.
Does it say Model 30 / Express on the left side of the front ring?
Or does it say Model 30-S / Express..
They had Model variations for just about everything including factory mounted optics and specialty aperture rear sights.

Model 30S (S-Special) was a variation of the Express. It was their Deluxe version of the rifle. In the early 30's it was changed to Model 30SL.
Lot's of options. They even had different Model designations for the rifles ordered w/factory installed optics and specialty aperture sights beyond the standard Lyman.

I'd say a 7x57cal is a real find,,can't recall ever seeing one in the flesh myself. Usually 30-06, a 25Rem made over to 257Roberts or a cobbled up rechambered HV modern magnum conversion of some sort.
That Lyman Alaskan is a beauty too,,not an easy scope to find anymore in nice condition.

It's actually a Model 30-S Express. That and the unusual caliber are what made me want to grab it!

It is the original stock but it isn't the original finish on the wood. I believe the bluing is original, and it's still in pretty good shape. I shot it a bit this morning, and it did about 1 1/2" to 2". That's about as good as I can shoot with that old Alaskan. I think it will do just fine this Fall.

The model P-14/1917/P-17 is my all time favorite. I'd have snapped that one up in a minute. I have a few as issued service rifles and one custom on a P-17 Eddystone action in 30-06 (1:12 twist barrel). The 06 makes for easy loading and reloading (I usually shoot nothing but cast lead in any of them) but I'd sure have taken the 7mm if there had been a choice.
