As you know, our hobby can get expensive. Lately, rather than buying a high-end condition Smith, I've been buying practical plinking guns for nice days here on the hobby farm. Now that 22 LR is more or less back, it's a fun way to enjoy the sport with my wife and enjoy some degree of marksmanship.

I recently bought a Savage Model 64F for $125.00 OTD brand new. Ya, the trigger takes getting used too. I need to order a few additional mags. But, boy. This thing is a nice little plinking gun.

No sense in posting a picture of a brand new stock gun. However, please feel free to share your cheap rifles that may not cost a lot but are practical. Best, TH:)

This should only fuel the fire for a fun lil .22. I've got a 15-22, but been thinking about adding a little bolt action 22, hopefully with a threaded barrel, if they exist..

Spanish Mauser in 7x57. I'm in it less than $100, loaded with ammo.

I picked up this sporterized Enfield fo $60 at an auction a couple of weeks back.

Traded 2 Ambassadeur reels for this nice JC Higgins model 28 semi auto. Think it's a High Standard. :)

Last year I bought a Winchester M60, circa 1930's for my then 9 year old granddaughter for $140.00.

Hard to match the quality today for twice the price.

I have a thing for Winchester model 67's. My dad started with one in the 40's, I started with the same one in the 70's. My son started with the same one in the 2000's. When I run across them cheap ($150 or less) I buy them. About full up right now, but I love sharing these with the Boy Scouts and new shooters. Hard to find a better built 22, that is ultra safe, accurate, readily available, cheap to feed, and a fine example of quality built American history. When I see guys looking at and asking about the chipmunks and other new single shot 22's for starting their son or daughter, I often share my knowledge on the model 67. I have given more than one new shooter a great deal on one from my stock pile.

Do love the quality of those old 22's like the Rem 550 and Winchester 75 myself. But would be happy to locate a Mossberg 640 Chuckster like the one I shot back in the 70's. Some good ole nostalgia.

Cut down 1891 Argentine Mauser with a nice Williams ramp front sight and the original military rear. $75 about 3 years ago. The salesman said the gunsmith said it wouldn't shoot because the barrel wasn't crowned properly. I guarantee he never shot it. Once I get a receiver sight mounted to match the ramp, it will be my pig gun.

Can't remember exactly what I paid for a 10/22 on sale couple years ago, maybe $170. Was going to get a fancy stock and .920 Barrel but decided just keep as is.

Remington 582 with a weaver scope for less than $80 in the 70s.The scope is no longer usable, but that rifle will still put 3 rounds into 5/8" at 50 yards

One comes to mind, A Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow 30-06. $250 with a cheaper Tasco Varmint scope. Very poor Camo paint job including the scope.. A lot of elbow grease and Acetone. Came out to be a very clean stock rifle, a $40 CDNN original Winchester FW stock and it shot MOA with many loads. Gave it to my SIL the Marine.. (Retired Navy LOL )

About 10-12 years ago a local guy on another board took in a Rossi 62A on a trade with the sole intention of reselling it. He asked $200 and no takers. $150 and still no sale. After a couple of months he just posted that if someone would give him $60, they could have it. I figured why not?
I guess he never shot it because if he had, he never would have sold it. This little sucker is a tack driver! This rifle and a set of swingers makes for a great day. :D

Last year I took in a little Mossberg 702 on a trade. They're actually made by CBC in Brazil. Good Lord! This thing was awful! The trigger was long, gritty and about 10 pounds. Constant feed jams. Its a very cheap gun. :(
But, I saw some potential there and decided to make a project out of it. With a bit of judicious stoning, a reduced trigger spring, a set of sling swivels and a cheap Academy scope, this little sucker is now completely reliable, has a smooth, slick 4 lb trigger and will consistently shoot 1/2" or less with just about any ammo.
I guess you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. ;)

I have my first firearm, a Winchester model 190 semi-auto in .22LR. I bought it new at K Mart (remember them?) for $54 when I was 18. AND it was a package deal, so I got a tasco scope with it...for free. I could never get the scope to work right, so I believe I tossed it, but I still have the gun.

I bought a rather cool old bolt action Mossberg .22 with a tube magazine a few years ago. I can't remember the model #, but I believe it came originally with a more or less full length stock (ala Enfield), if that helps. The stock had been cut down on my gun. I think I paid 120 something or 130 something for the gun a few years ago. It works ok, but it may not be as accurate as my other .22 rifles.

My best "deal" is a .22 Stevens Buckhorn rifle that was given to me by my dad several years ago. It was one of his first rifles, and he bought it new in 1935 or 36, when he was about 15 years old. I wish I knew how much he paid for it - I'm guessing it was a $10 rifle back then. Very plain, with a very stiff trigger, but it's more accurate than the Mossberg. My dad is still living - 96 years old.

Picked up this clip fed Remington Nylon at a gun show close to 40 years ago I think for $40. Rode for over 20 years behind seat of my pickup. Still shoots like new.

I had a customer give me a mint 1948 Remington 514, free. He later brought me an Uruguyan 1871/94 Mauser Doviitis. I need to find someone to repair the firing pin on this one, as it was clipped. It too is a really nice condition rifle. Also free.
