Talking Ol'Reliable

Well, this morning I'm out pounding 50 rounds of 00 Buck (ugh it's a luv- hate relationship lol) thru ol'reliable, my Remington 870 Police.

The Hornady American Gunner "Reduced Recoil" 8 Pellet load functioned perfectly, cycled smoothly, and was manageable enough to allow for accurate double and triple taps. For a defense load I liked shooting it much better than the full-bore 9 Pellet loads from Federal and Remington that I also shot (my shoulder still isn't speaking to me lol). Still, after 50 rounds, I'm done lol.

I use the 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buck. Does the three inch shells have 12 / 00 pellets?

I just put a 18" 12ga riot barrel on my maverick. Home protection. I did purchase a 30" barrel for bird hunting.

Generally speaking yes, 3" Magnum 00 Buck will have 12 pellets.

Mine is 18" barrel with front bead sight that I like painted bright white, strictly a buck shot defensive tool. The bright white bead really jumps out, at least for my eyes, against dark backgrounds.

Nice job setting up your Maverick for home defense.

Back when I used my personal 870 on patrol, I used the 3" magnum 00 load. I think it carried 15 pellets.

Never felt the need for 3 inch for home protection. I use an 870 MK1 with a 20 inch barrel. I shoot nothing but 00 Buck and slug. The first couple in the chamber are 00 Buck, then slug thereafter.

That is the way my Winchester 1897 is loaded.

I used it for patrol for a few years. One time, we were doing shotgun quals and we were supposed to shoot slugs at 50 yards, followed by 00 buck at 25 yards. Well, I messed up & shot my buckshot at 50. I told the range officer and he laughed, saying I probably only have a few hits at that range. He and I walked down to the target frame and I had put ALL of my buckshot in the silhouette. He was kinda shocked (so was I).

My 870 with 18" barrel sits at the ready loaded with Federal L.E. 9 pellet reduced recoil loads. The flight control wad is amazing. At 25 yards with that 18" cylinder bore barrel one round punched a fist size hole in a paper target. I figure at living room distance that would.. leave a mark!
After buying a Benelli for clays my Reming 1100 has been sitting, gathering dust. I have a couple of barrels for it and think I'll cut one to 18.5", get the gas ports sorted and park it next to the 870. Much easier on the shoulder!

Yes, there are most definitely 3" loads that pack 15 pellets. There's also 3.5" loads that pack 18 pellets...yikes lol.
