Default Knife Cut Off

What's your cut off range on price wise ? Mine being on a forced early retirement(health wise ). My bottom line for E D C carry knife is $ 100.00 max and would and have in the past stayed in $50.00 to $ 75.00. Range. Even when working I never really gave it any thought to spend more than that on a knife. What say you ?

CRKT Drifter, under $30.
Nice solid knife, takes and holds a good edge.
It's my EDC.

I have a custom made Damascus blade with mammoth ivory grips, file and scroll work and mosaic pins. It cost more then a lot of firearms that I have. I don't have access to a camera at the moment but I will post up a picture of it tomorrow it's truly awesome.

Personally I don't see paying as much for a knife as a gun would cost. If I can get my blade out fairly fast and the blade stays locked in position and the blade won't bend or break off that's all I care about. Okay so I am cheap by some standards but to me $50 is a high dollar knife. Anything costing more than that is a collector item and needs locked up in the safe. I don't collect knives but I do have a few inexpensive ones laying around. I do carry a 2" switchblade in my pocket that sometimes the button gets pressed and the blade quickly flies out. LOL good it is only a 2" blade or I might hurt myself.

Since Texas repealed the knife carry laws I have thought about getting a knife for defense but I don't want a big sort of heavy knife to carry around. I really am not thrilled about having a knife holster on my belt either so I don't know what I want. It will be interesting what some here carry for defense.

I have a lot of knives. All under $100. Most under $30. One of my favorites is an Old Hickory 8" butcher knife that I paid $0.50 for at an estate sale.

Most of my folders are under $100.

I do have a few fixed blade knives that were between $150 and $200.

My state recently removed a ban on carrying auto knives and the one I have my eyes on is around $300.

I never had an official cut off - I just have to feel that the knife is worth the asking price. My EDC is a USA made Marbles Gladstone 2001 Limited Edition Large Stockman (1/50 if memory serves - with carbon steel blades which I prefer) with Sambar Stag Scales that I paid $150 for straight from the Gladstone MI Custom Shop when it was operating. I thought that was a lot back then, but it has proven to be one of the best knives I've ever owned and they are now selling (if you can even find one) for double or triple what I paid in new condition. Most who purchased them probably never use them - I do and now feel it was worth every penny I paid.

I also have a Kershaw Leek that was given to me as a gift. It is all stainless steel and probably cost under $50 buck although it is 100% USA made. It is also a vey capable knife that I deem well worth the coin.

I DID seriously look into purchasing a Chris Reeve Sabenza knife for $500 bucks and while all the reviews were terrific, I just could not bring myself to plunk down $500 bucks on a pocket knife - therefore I passed on it. Not that I couldn't afford the price, but I just don't think it will do anything that either my marbles or Kershaw won't for a whole lot less. It did not have Ivory, Sambar Stag, exotic scales, etc and to me it just didn't justify the cost. I'm sure it's a very well built knife, but I'd rather put it towards something else that floats my boat.

For the money, a Case knife is still made in the USA and still a very descent quality knife for a very reasonable price if you are into traditional style pocket knives. If you want a more modern style, look at Kershaw's USA made line-up.

A Buck 345, made in the USA. Just bought it, still on trial, I think I gave 26 dollars for it. I have a couple of nice folding knives that I have had for many years. They didn't cost anything close to $50.00, probably less that $20.00.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I'm not a knife aficionado, so I picked a $25 Gerber Paraframe 1 knife from LL Bean, since I had points there which made it free. Had it 2 1/2 years and still like it. Solid and it's still very sharp even though I use it as a utility knife.

I do understand but look at this way it's my BBQ knife that goes along with my BBQ gun, no different than a really nicely engraved revolver and a set of leather that cost 400+ it's just what I wanted.

I like the Kershaw assisted opening knives , can be found in the $30 to $60 dollar range. If they cost too much , it hurts when you loose one.
I have several custom Randall Made knives that only go to BBQ's , most of the time they stayed put away . I would be very upset to loose one of those.

The Benchmade Griptilian series is a good value. Especially when you consider lifetime knife sharpening at no to you.

My limit is between $150-$200 although I have spent more. Just depends on the knife.

I would say this is about where I'm at. Nowadays, I'd say $100 is probably my upper limit for an EDC knife. Fortunately, I'm a big fan of the Spyderco Delica, which I've gotten for around $60 each, new. I have two, so far...I would like to eventually get at least one in each handle color option. I would also like to get the Kahr 2.5" version, which I've seen for around $85-90. I'd also like to add an Endura at some point.

However, I've also had 3 Emerson folders which served as EDC knives, each of which were somewhere in the $100-225 range, IIRC, and I would say they were worth the price. Of the Emersons, my favorite was probably the Mini-Commander (I also had the Mini-CQC7-BW and the SOCFK).

I don't have a "cutoff". My CRK 21 Sebenza and Umnumzaan both cost around $425-$450. I've got others that cost less but would bring more on a good day on eBay.

Knives are like guns for me. I buy what I want if and when I can afford it.

My Kershaw Leek has filled any requirements I have ever had for it. Carried the same one since 2006.

My cut-off is a C note too. Said it many times, a knife is a disposable asset. They get lost, stolen, broken, lent and not returned, and/or confiscated. If any of the above happens, I want something I can depend on, but also something I can replace next pay day.

Been packin a Sog Trident Tanto the last couple years. $59 at Dicks. The Buck Alpha folder is also a solid performer and comes with a nylon pouch for carrying. Many choices out there and steel types are sure plentiful. Like spring assist myself.

I don't have a cut-off. Most of my daily carry folders are in the $50 - $100 range. I also have a few auto's that go more in the $300 - $400 range. My most robust, hold an edge, can't kill it is my CRKT M16-04 with plain edge & tanto point. It was gifted to me about 20 years ago and I have no idea of the price range then or now. Damn good knife.

I guess I've just been lucky. I don't loan knives, haven't had one stolen, confiscated and only misplaced one for a few years. Not sure I've broken one either. Seems like all the worries you apply to knives would apply equally to a firearm. Any "cutoff" on those?

I'm carrying a Randall Made Knife or a Buck 110, folding hunter. So $35 to $375.

I have no knife fighting fantasies so don't carry a knife as a defensive weapon.

I do carry a Camillis Stream Line pen knife made in the 1930's.

Does everything I need done. I've even gutted a deer with it.

You could probably find one on e-bay for under $50.00.

Good point Richard Simmons I thought about that on the firearm thing while starting this thread. A cut off for firearm is most likely out there for all of us. For me all my firearms are all carry arms. .32, .380, .38, 9mm, 40, & 45 Acp. The higest was the 40, 45 around $ 500.00 to $600.00 To answer you cut off on a firearm for me would have to be $1.000 and it would be a must need lol.And as this thread is going as I expected most have (all have ) a price pont cut off at some point. And btw this coming from a guy that spent more money on his last new motorcycle than some did on new car go figure

I have gone over a hundred bucks a couple of times, on a Benchmades and a GEC harness jack, and I have received a couple of knives as gifts that had to go over a hundred. A lot of my knives are Case or Rough Rider slipjoints. The latter go for $10-12, the Cases anywhere from $20-60.

A lot of my knives are low-buck ethnic working folders, often with wood handles and carbon steel blades, like Opinel, Filmam, Antonioni, Okapi, or Swedish and Finnish fixed blades like Mora and Marttiini. Those tend to run between ten and thirty bucks.

My favorite price for a knife is ten bucks. I have quite a few at that price, and none is junk.

"Must not think about buying knives. Do not want to sleep on couch. Leave the knives with the dealer. Let's go look at T-shirts." Gun show/Sporting goods store/cutlery corner mantra , it works, I only bought two knives last week.

$100.00 is generally my upper limit, most of the time less. I did exceed that 20 years ago on my Benchmade 710. Still carrying it on duty daily.

I tend to lose them long before the get damaged. I was carrying a Buck but the spring got wonky and it wouldn't stay closed. I always have a folder and a flashlight. Both from Walmart and under 35. I like the assisted opening Kershaw. Wish they were made in USA.

My cutoff is "Will it do what I want, and can I afford it right now . . . "

Some of the assisted Kershaw are US made. Check out the 1670, 1870 and 1776 for example. All good knives.

All I think I want to say here is that I have owned very expensive knives and used some.

My EDC is a Swiss Army knife in a trouser pocket, usually a Victorinox Spartan. Today, just for variety, it's a blue-handled Wenger of which I don't know the model. It's marked as a give-out knife for a company called Deloitte. I bought it for maybe five bucks, used and confiscated, at a gun show. But I went through every knife in three buckets of them before buying several that had seen little or no use. This Wenger was among them, and I had it re-honed professionally and shined up the blade with Simichrome polish. The closed length is 84 mm and it has about the same sort of blades as does the Spartan.

On my belt is a Benchmade Model 710, a great favorite. It's in a plain black Cordura sheath that most people probably assume is a cell phone.

I don't dress like a truck driver or drug store cowboy, so don't wear floral-carved sheaths for folding knives. Yes, this knife is partially for defense, but can double for other cutting needs. The Swiss knife handles most of those, though.

When I carry a briefcase, it holds a Vic. SwissChamp in a fine black leather SOS kit. I think I've used every blade on it at one time or another.

My son gave me a Vic. Hunter model SAK earlier this year and I see it as a jacket pocket knife or for a belt pouch. It's longer and heavier than most Victorinox knives, and the blade locks open. A utility knife that can double for defense...

While I can appreciate a really nice knife, the ones I carry are just simple tools. They get used and abused a thousand different ways. I wouldn't spend more than maybe $50, more like the $25 range.
My EDC is a 2 1/2" S&W SWAT that I've had for probably 15 years. I believe I paid about $25 for it way back when and its served me very well.
Back when I was still working, I was notoriously hard on knifes. It might be used to open cans, cut hoses, strip cables are even as small pry bar. So I tended to carry something pretty cheap. I bought a 3" Buck 285 at a gun show for I believe it was $14. It survived my last 5 years of work and is still used today. I'm really impressed by how well its held up despite the constant abuse it got.

My EDC varies on weather, NC there is no conceal of a fixed blade, only pocket knives. I found a rusted air force survival knife with rotted handle. Pulled off leather handle, boiled blade turning it black, and put a bamboo handle on it with a Indian nickle pommel, sheath is made from an old belt.

Cost 5 cents.

The old hickory pairing knife would make a great fixed blade EDC, just need a sheath. Opinel are good folding knives, but they are not one handed openers. Svord peasant knife opens with one hand.

OH 4 inch pairing knife under $10

Opinel number 8 folding knife under $20

Svord peasant knife under $20

My cutoff is at $80. I do own a few that cost me that much but they're rarely carried.

The two knives I use and carry the most are a Buck 110 ($34) and a Buck 285 Bantam ($15). I find that the more you pay for a knife the less you want to actually wear it out.

Thanks, I really like the way the stabilized fossil ivory turned out. Not the kind of knife you would want to abuse but it has field dressed a couple of deer. You really have to clean it up quick because the Damascus is really subject to rusting in a hurry.

The Delica comes with many blade configurations and steels. Handle colors add many additional configurations. Do not think you are getting off cheap if you get hooked on Delicas. The ZDP-189 steel British Racing Green handle (upper right in picture) runs about $100 at best. I get iffy paying over $100 for a knife. If I have to have it, it can be had, but I'm old enough to know that I will continue to live without it.

Buck 345 as stated by at least one other. Less than $30 and if I lose it I'll feel dumb but not poor. I've got a 110 and a 119 that both exceeded $30 but I can't wear them in the office! I'm trying to spend enough time in the woods to make them look used before I die. They strap down and are harder to lose, leaning back in a chair with a knife in dress pants is how I lose them. I admire people's $100-$300 custom knives but that gets into the price range of interesting old guns (like a 32 short revolver that is so old it was pre-smokeless for $125. Much cooler to me than a custom knife with mastodon scales.).

$0.15 is as high as I'll go.

Found a rusty but trusty Buck at a yard sale. Cost me a dime after some haggling, told the guy it looked like it had blood pitting on it. Been my EDC since. I see no reason to pay more than about $0.15 for a carry knife.

I like Buck or Gerber I can get a nice folder, made in USA, not too big, for about $20. Easy one handed opening and stay sharp.
I tend to lose knives especially if they are expensive. I once found a nice Buck 112c with leather pouch by in my yard by the road. Found it with the lawn mower, the holster got cut up but not a nick on the knife.
