Default Ruger MK II Stainless Target

I was visiting with an old friend the other day and the subject of Ruger Mark II's came up. I had stated that it had been a long time since I had seen a decent Mark II for sale at a gun show or gun shop. My friend asked if I really, really wanted one. I said, "well, sort of", and he went back in his safe and pulled out this new 5 1/2" stainless Target Model. I haven't seen one of these for sale in years! I'm glad my friend was willing to sell it to me.

They took a hit, value wise with the intoduction of the mkiv. But I still think they are the best of all the mk series. Plus mkii's come in so many cool variations. My personal favorite is a little 4in bull barrel. My 5-1/2 inch bull is my second favorite. Unfortunately mine are blue, I prefer stainless,.

Nice gun OP, your friend did you a favor.

I find the trigger to be decent but I highly recommend a Volquartsen trigger kit. You will truly love it. Have about 30000 rounds through it. I added a mount for an Ultradot Matchdot.

Once you learn how to field strip it, and you learn the proper sequence to reassemble it, then you're good to go. Watch a YouTube channel to do it. It's not hard. It's necessary to clean as 22 LR is quite dirty.

If you want marked accuracy and reliability, CCI, Eley (anything), Lapua and Wolf match.

It's a great plinker. My friend and I shoot at golf balls at 25 yards. It's quite fun and challenging.

Very nice. Congratulations!

I have a Mark II Competition Target (or is it: Target Competition?). 6 & 7/8" slab-sided bull barrel, but otherwise, it's the same as yours. I love it! I bought mine new 20-some years ago, and changed the grips (the plastic checkering was too sharp for my hand) which caused feeding problems. Now mine wears the Hogue rubber grips Ruger sells - so no more feeding problems, and fiber-optic sights. I also put in the Volquartzen 'Competition' kit and the extended safety and LOVE it. What a great gun. Enjoy yours!

Thanks. I'm well versed in takedown procedures on the Mark II. Not so much on the newer Marks although I own both Mark III's and one Mark IV. I don't think I'll be modifying the trigger on this particular Mark II Target; it's the best I've ever encountered on a stock Ruger automatic!

Just yesterday I had the conversation with a friend that I do not see many MKII handguns for sale
Especially when you consider how many of them were made

It's because most people who actually do shoot them, enjoy them. Someone offered to buy mine. I said, "Absolutely not."

The beauty of the gun is the inexpensive cost of spare parts. I bought spares of the internals. I have had to replace my spring/rod once, already. It's not hard to fix.

I'd never trade it for the newer ones, especially the Mark III. My next 22 LR would be a S&W Revolver, but it's hard not to want to shoot this Target Competition pistols. It's way more accurate than I am.

I checked my trigger weight, and it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.2-2.5 lbs. It's no hair trigger but for Precision shooting it's super fun.

Your post made me curious enough to go pull out my Lyman Electronic Trigger Pull Gauge and take some measurements on my new Mark II Target. An average of ten pulls resulted in a reading of 3# 4.3 oz. Now granted, that's not what most would consider outstanding, but I will stand by my earlier statement that it's the best stock Ruger automatic trigger I've personally encountered. It is extremely crisp and consistent.

That's a beauty! Congrats on the acquisition. I have blue one like that for many years. Wouldn't care to trade mine either. It's a keeper.

If it's good enough for you, then it's all that matters.

Enjoy. It's one of the best.

Federal bulk, Federal Match and Remington Thunderbolt are not accurate through my experience. They have a high rate of bad primers, too. Eley and CCI are two of the best.

The Ruger MkII's are solid guns that can take a high round count.

When friends come over, we always shoot the Ruger MK's,,

Mine is on top, the other one is my wife's.

She does not like the "heavy" steel MK,,,

Most bang for the buck of any of the .22 handguns, no not a K22 or Diamondback, but not nearly the $$$ either.

When someone ask me about their first handgun, a Ruger .22 is always my suggestion.

Default ruger MKII

That's a really nice MKII-enjoy For over 50 years, I've always owned at least one Ruger .22. My current most favorite pistol to shoot is this 10 year old MKIII with many thousands of rounds of enjoyment, and a few "goodies" added over the years

D Brown:

Your friend did indeed do you a favor by selling you that piece. I have its twin purchased NIB about 35 years ago - my first Ruger, as a matter of fact. I used it to win quite a few silhouette matches back in the day.

I also used it to introduce my son to pistol shooting, and we used it in box stock condition to enter steel challenge matches. At our first match, we were standing behind the line waiting to be called up when some lady walked by us. She was wearing a tricked out Ruger Mk? in a competition rig, and she must have had every accessory and doo-da ever made on or about her. She looked at the unloaded Ruger Mk-II laying on top of our shooting box, sneered and said: "Oh, what a cute little shiny gun". My son looked at me and I told him to remember that it's seldom the equipment, but the user that gets the best results, and to concentrate on the basics - presentation, breathing, sight alignment, trigger press, follow-through, etc. On our first match we placed in the top five (I want to say 2nd and 3rd place, but my memory is fuzzy and my notes aren't here). The lady with all of the fancy equipment - I don't know where she placed, but it sure as heck wasn't in the top ten.

I hope you have half of the fun and enjoyment I've had with mine.

Regards,

Dave

I do bullseye competition with a blued Mark III with the VQ kit in it, which removed the magazine safety, and added an Ultradot 25. I LOVE this thing. Also have a spare 6 7/8" stainless Mark II comp slab-side upper with a 2x6 scope on it.

My backup is an original 22/45 with the 4" bull barrel and a reworked sear.

Are their better pistols for bullseye? Yes. Are they more expensive? Yes. Will most shooters be held back by a well tuned and maintained Ruger .22 semi auto? No.

I've seen a lot more of the MkII's for sale since the IV's came out. I actually found a target model with the 10" barrel for a very reasonable price. I've been looking for that deal for years but the gun shop people screwed me around so much I left without even looking at the gun. I waited in line for 15 minutes and they waited on someone before me that had just walked up. That really ticked me off and I put down everything I had picked up to buy and left the store. I won't be going back even though I consider that particular pistol to be among the best shooters ever made. My friend has one that is crazy accurate. I have been looking for one since I first shot his about 10 years ago. They only wanted $250 for the one in the gun shop. Great deal but terrible service. Considering how much money I've spent there on guns, ammo and accessories it was a big boneheaded play by them.

I have an MK II and MK IV. I really like both.
A friend came over to my house back in the late 80's I guess it was and he asked if I wanted a MK II for $100 and I bought it. I still have it and I doubt I will sell it even though I have thought about it since I bought the MK IV. I thought I really don't need two MK 22 guns. But I still have it. I wouldn't sell it for under $250 - $300 anyway.

My MK II was shot many times over at least ten years without being cleaned and it never failed to fire. Thanks to You Tube I finally founb out how to clean it.

When I got my MK IV I bought a brick of Aguila .22 super extra standard velocity 40gr lead bullets. I kept getting jams that the bullet wouldn't hit the feed ramp right. It usually happened with the first 3 rounds of any magazine I tried. So I tried my KM II that has never jammed and dang if it didn't do the same thing and jam. I can use any other 22lr, even Thunder duds and not ever jam these guns. The Aguila will have to be shot in my revolvers only from now on.
