I can't seem to stop picking up 22s! It's like I'm a magnet when I get near a nice one.
Oh, look! I've always wanted one of those since I saw my friends' in high school.
Bada Boom. Money gone, 22 bought.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining, just trying to figure it out. Are they good investments? Nostalgia? Good shooters? Or, hopefully, all of the above!
So far I'm covering most of the major manufacturers.
I keep asking myself, do I really need that?
But then self says" what? You saving it to buy your casket or something?"
So I bid.....

I don't imagine anyone will actually suggest a number that would be "too many" .22s!

I've also picked up quite a few .22s, since ammo got pricey. I have a rather significant stash of .22 ammo that I picked up before the "shortage", so I began seeing a lot of folks divesting themselves of their .22s, since it was no longer cheap to shoot them, many of them said it was almost as cheap to shoot 9mm. Since .22 ammo has become more readily available, and prices have come down *a bit*...perhaps that particular buyer's market is going away.

At one point, I was also debating whether there was any purpose in buying any more .22s. I decided as long as I had room in the safe, and the price was right...why not? I always figure if I decide I don't care for a particular gun, or it turns out I need to raise a little cash...so long as I can at least break even on selling something, what's the harm of buying it? I've gotten some really good deals that were hard to walk away from!

Ive got 5. An STG-44/22, an MP-40/22 two Rough Rider 22's and a 10/22. When I get all the stuff out of the way I need to get? ill be getting more Rough Riders and another 10/22.

This is an obvious trick question like "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" Every .22 I have ever had was fun to shoot so never too many.

If we are talking handguns I've only got 5 or 6! If we are talking rifles, that falls into a few categories. First and Highest: Top Quality Target Rifles, you probably shouldn't have more that 3 or 4 per shooter in your household (There are exceptions!) I was at 3 for a long time but unexpected forced retirement happened, and I sold my best 2 along with other 2 rifles and a couple 3200 20x scopes, These fine rifles paid off my Credit cards, paid for my last 3 trimesters of college and gave me pocket money for 6 months. You pay plenty for good ones, even used, but they just keep going up in value! So I'm down to 1!

Next for me is Premium Sporting Rifles. I have a Kimber of Oregon Varminter, and Weatherby Mark XXII bolt action (Anschutz action). So that's 2 (and not enough!)

Next is Modern Decent Quality sporting rifles. I have a Ruger 10-22 Deluxe from 1974 and some Winchester and Remington bolt guns. I'm Good!

Next are daily woods & field guns. I pick up any I see at a good price! My favorite is a Savage 24 Camper 22/20gauge. I have 7 or 8 and still searching! I have 6 grandkids currently And hopefully more to outfit!

Just junk guns! I don't know why but I've come up with 1/2 dozen of these to play with.

Lastly, Antique Guns. Older pumps, bolts, and single shots. These could be junkers up to priceless artifacts. Personally, I feel that there are not enough in my collection.

Take 30 or 40 years and figure out how many you can acquire, then tell me if that is enough! (unless she agrees with you, the wife's opinion probably shouldn't be used as a guideline!)

But of course nothing at all wrong with duplicates in any or all categories!

I had more than a dozen at one time. Shoot, now that i think of it, I had a half-dozen 10/22's. I was a real sucker for those DSP stocks. There were at least a half dozen 22 handguns.

These days I'm down to only four. A 10/22, a Single-Six, a High Standard 101 with a 2 1/2" barrel (in pink), and a 1948 K-22.

Two. Ruger 10/22. Ruger Single Six 22lr-22mag convertible. Three, if you count the 22 conversion unit for my 1911. Four, if you count my Henry 22mag. lever action.

I liked the way those kept adding up Donn.

Only 3 so far.

1) '50s era Colt Challenger: old hand me down from inlaws, started me in this hobby. Doesnt go out to play much but still a nice little shooter.
2) Buckmark w/ Coco grips: when i wanna be good at the range.
3) SW compact .22: when i wanna have fun at the range.

After seeing some other posts, I'm feeling a little inadequate in the qty column.

When I read this thread I had to check my inventory just to see how many I actually have.
I have twenty two .22s! That sounds just about right.
But I certainly won't rule out adding some more.

My policy has always been:

.22's are so cheap to shoot if you see one that looks like fun, buy it! I have a couple dozen fun .22's

Truth be told I could have stopped after my first three and been perfectly happy. Marlin 39a, Ruger stainless single six, stainless Ruger MkII target.

I've heard guys saying that they've "outgrown" .22's, and I don't think that's even possible for someone who loves to shoot, and has an honest appreciation for nice firearms.

My count is at five, but I just came up with a reason for #6. (Like I need a reason!) Right now, I'm "in between" Ruger 10-22's. Not too long ago, I found this beautiful old walnut stock, along with a like-new stainless barrel, for 65 bucks! Now I just need a receiver...

The new stuff does not interest me much plastic just does not do a firearm justice in my opinion, glad I lived in the time I have and been able to enjoy so may years with the great ones. I love the old Winchesters, Remingtons, walnut or even pine stocks. Smith & Wesson 22s are always a delight.

I guess I failed to provide numbers justifying how many is *not* too many, in my opinion...

As far as rifles...an H&K HK270, a Sabatti heavy barrel (a 10/22 clone), a Sig 522, a Romanian M.69 military trainer, a Taurus Mod. 62 take-down in S/S, a well-used-and-abused Winchester Mod. 250 lever-action, a Charter Arms AR-7, and multiple examples of various utilitarian Marlin/Savage-Stevens/Remington semi-auto tube-fed & bolt-action rifles.

I'd still like to get a Henry lever-action or a Win. 9422, and one (or more) of the CZ bolt-actions, and possibly one of the Henry AR-7s, as my Charter Arms has seen better days. I'd also love to have a H&K HK300 in .22 WMR, to go with my HK270...but I'm loathe to spend the $1000 or more that they bring!

In handguns, I'd still like to find a 4" M.2206 & M.622, a M.2213 & M.2214, & a M.61, and a Ruger MKII Slabside in blue or stainless. I'd also like to acquire another revolver or two...preferably a DA S&W or Dan Wesson, but I wouldn't turn up my nose at a Ruger or Taurus.

.22s lay bare all your faults. "One ragged hole" with a .45 ACP becomes "an unsatisfying pattern" with a .22. You can't blame recoil or flinching. And even the most inexpensive target pistols produce minuscule groups, thanks to the fixed barrels of their blowback actions.

The below is a 10-round, 50-foot group, shot one-handed bullseye style. The 10-ring is .9" across, a hair smaller than a quarter. The two 9s and an 8 were 100% my fault, all shots I should not have taken.

The gun is a...well, not inexpensive .22. The lower is a home-built 1911 frame. The upper is a Larry Nelson conversion, priced at $425. Total is about what one would expect to pay for an okay Model 41.



And no, I don't shoot this well very often .

I have several .22s. I suppose it would be fair to say I have too many in the context that my two favorites are used about 99% of the time while the others hold down the safe.

I was just trying to count up in my head. I got confrused when I got to 15 or 16. Don't think I counted anything twice, but I'm sure I missed one or two. That's counting handguns and .22 magnums.

I work in a pawn shop. We have some interesting stuff come in, and it's hard for me to resist sometimes. There is a Sig Mosquito in the used handgun case right now that I could get at a very good price.

This was my last failure to resist temptation. Marlin 995 with good looking wood, and just a few minor finish issues. How could I not take it home for $100 OTD? Need has nothing to do with it. Tell me you would have passed on it.

One of the most accurate little 22s I ever owned.

On a cold day do you throw one or two wood stocked rifles in the fire? When you build a staircase do you use them as ballisters? When a pot breaks do you weld a pistol on as a new handle?. Do you use them as paperweights?

I am 22 "poor" myself. The newest rifle I have is 77/22 from'1st
year out and 10/22 from 60s. I have all classic 22 rifle & pistols.
I'm 67 and can't get over the prices some of the run of the mill
22s from the 60s & 70s are selling for. The post 64 Win line of
22s and Rem 66s as well as most Savage products of the time
were very low on the totem pole in the world of 22 rifles. The
Rem & Mar bolt actions weren't fancy but good 22s. In fact these
meat & potatoe 22s that cost $69 in the day are better guns than
they are making today, not to mention the costs. Many of today's
22s are over priced novelties made to detonate a 22cartridge, if
you are lucky. The bean counters steady march to the bottom
line has ruined American made 22s. I guess that is the reason
for $250 Nylon 66s. The Ruger American and the new Savages
shoot well but have no class.

I wish you guys would stop making me count what I have.... (It's hard to explain to the wife why I need so many....)
Currently the count of .22 rimfires stands at 19. (2 rifles and 17 handguns.)

Oops! make that 20. I just found another handgun....
