Picked up this Kragily thing
I love the smoothness of the action on these.
Been wanting to try one for a while.
This may be an arsenal rework to carbine but it works for what I want and can afford.

Kragily Thing
Lord what a gun! Love to have one, modified or not. You've got a great gun in a great cartridge. I'm assuming it's 30/40

Neat-o! Man, that looks like a lot of fun, right there! (I love the smoothness of the action on those, too. Have always wanted one, and have never quite gotten around to buying. )

Great, smooth action: unparalleled by anything available in contemporary bolt action rifles.
The 30-40 is largely a handloader’s cartidge, not so much to realize the cartridge’s potential but because contemporary ammo manufacturers don’t offer a regular supply. Keep your eyes open for ammo at gunshows and small LGSs.
Note that the action isn’t one you should load very hot loads for.
That said, the 30-40 has taken all North American game with no problems.
The initial load was a 220 gr bullet which was lighted later to 150 gr chasing the high vel Mauser 7mm. Handloaded ammo with 220 gr bullets is pretty stout stuff.

I am old enough to remember when gun shops had barrels of these and 03 Springfields. Your pick. Wish I would have bought the whole barrel.

60 years ago I was elk hunting with my Dad and a couple of other guys.
One had a Krag. We were in camp after supper and two fellers from CA came wandering through camp. They was cold and lost. After a couple of cups of coffee they thawed out a bit.
One noticed the Krag leaning against a tree. He said, "would you sell that rifle?"
The owner said he wasn't interested in selling it.
The guy dug out his check book, filled it out and signed it but left the amount empty.. He said, "fill it out to suit you."
Owner said, "Nah, he didn't want to sell it."
I got a whole new outlook about old surplus rifles that night.

That may be a Benicia Arsenal rework. Check Flayderman, if you can get a copy. Prices will be out of whack, but the descriptions are still good. The arsenal, in California, reworked rifles into a more or less carbine configuration. On some, you can see where the cleaning rod fit under the forearm. I believe the front sights were one of the 03 Springfield sights. According to Flayderman, they are considered a secondary military, although I believe they were sold through the DCM, never issued.

I did have some other pictures Dave.
The barrel is 22" as a carbine should be.
Can definitely see the filer......... it is well done and old.

I had my son, almost 17 now, working the bolt.
He was impressed.....then I told him the guns age.
I was cleaning and oiling it and the bore was pristine....really hoping It's a good shooter.

Man, I'll bet it will be a sweet shooter with cast bullets and 2400 in some gallery loads. Not to mention nice, heavy bullet handloads for the field.

The Krags, my opinion, have the smoothest actions of any of the military bolt guns. The cam angles for the bolt and frame were very carefully designed for ease of use. The Krags had their limitations, but difficult operation was not one of them.
For comparing an original Krag carbine with the conversions, here is a pic of a Model 1896 carbine - identical to those used by Teddy's Rough Riders in the Spanish-American war.

A great rifle with a super smooth action.
Just remember not to use heavy reloads in that 30/40 Krag.
The locking lug can only hold so much pressure.
It works on deer and Elk at reasonable distances with the 180 RN ammo
if you do that sort of thing.
It was my first rifle that I took a California Black Tail Buck with
up near Napa, north of San Francisco, at age fourteen.
Enjoy.

Just FYI, that upper band is on backwards. The "U" stamp should face the muzzle, i.e. right-side-up when viewed with muzzle up (it is the upper band, after all).

Nevada Ed I do reload...thanks for the help.
My son's name is Hunter so yes I do that sort of thing :-)
I won't be pushing this one.
I even have some factory 180 RN to try.
Bullet choice on this one will take some study.

For bullets you might look up the Sierra RN Pro-Hunter or the
Speer Hot-Cor in the 150gr weight with the Remington 150
Core-Lokt with a little higher BC if you do BC in your loads.
Any 30-30 RN will also work to duplicate the old ammo but
the new "Power Point" designs and plastic tips can also be used.
A 150 at 2500fps or a 180 at just 2100 is plenty for deer size game
with the large .30 Cal dia. bullets.
I also shot the little 100gr Plinker with the Hornady #3005 over the Speer #1805, for accuracy......
for the kids to shoot and kill paper at a low price.
I was lucky enough to have some SR4759 for this task.
Just keep these cases separate from the "Big Load" brass.
I heard or read this, so made it a habit.
Safe loading.

Slug your bore ! I had a 99 carbine that wouldn't shoot into any less than about 14" @ 100yds. Found the bore heavily worn to .3105". Loaded up with Sierra 180 grain .303 spitzers @.311" over 42.0 IMR 4350, and shot 'em into about 4". Bullet fit is everything !

Searched for years looking for a krag with a nice bore. Found it in a small gun show for $180 bucks. Took it home and cleaned it up and was rewarded with a slightly worn but shiny bore. Some remington 180 grain core lokt's factory ammo shot very well. After my move from NY to Louisiana shot it occasionaly at the local gun club. About the time the movie "The rough Riders" came out and had a bunch of offers to sell it. resisted temptation for two reasons. it shot great and I'd never be able to replace it for what it cost me way back when. It's been sporterized as in the barrel has been cut down and a sporting ramp front sight added but the military rear left intact and the forend cut back to before the barrel band. Thanks for sharing yours. Frank

Slug your bore.
I'll do that if it doesn't perform well Larry and thanks for the info also.
The rifling in this one looks great so I'm anxious to shoot first and ask questions later.

I brought it out today to just give it a function test along with a muzzle loader I had to reaffirm zero on before tomorrow. I ate up that old box of ammo. In the box were 3 spritzer style that looked like old silver tips and they fed fine.....yeah. The rest were 180 round nose no problems with those either. I wasn't set up for an serious shooting but I could tell the bore was good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "Kettle Hill" just another name for "San Juan Hill"? Seems I remember that from the 3 years I was stationed aboard CVN 71.
