Well it's certainly been asked before. He understood the confusion based on ATFs definition. But a shotgun shell cannot be shot out of a rifle. And if the rifled slug guns were considered rifles, they would have to be regulated by the NFA, as are all rifles chambered for over .50 caliber. He did recommend you ask your local authorities too. Commonsense logic is not the law. And laws are interpreted differently, so unfortunately, you might want to check often.

A little advice folks. Don't get too worked up about simple things. If it does get you worked up, just ignore the situation. Not just on forums, but in life. My question and other's answers shouldn't have any impact on your life that's negative in nature.

When Sabot slugs were invented there really weren't any rifled slug bbls per se..The concept was in the works The Sabots were just like the foster slugs at the time weight heavy forward but they were much more aerodynamic for better range and supposedly more accurate. There were more than one type of sabot rounds.. The Police rounds were made of a very hard alloy and were absolutely marked to be used in IC or cylinder bores The hunting rounds were listed to be recommended for less than full chokes but would not hurt full choke guns. Just reading from the instruction on the boxes. The darn things were pretty accurate..more so than Foster slugs for certain. When the rifled bbls were introduced the sabots really came into their own. Foster slugs(rifled slugs) really didn't spin much as the rifling was so shalloow it had very little effect on the darn things. Most Foster slugs rattled down the bore of a shotgu as they were usually sized on the order of .680-.690..in 12 ga of course...the bore size of 12 ga measures approx .729...They were essentially the same size as the old pumpkin ball at about .680. They were more accurate as they were hollow based and had the majority of the wieght up front...think badminton shuttlecock. When they came up with the idea of the sabot they were following the lead of the military. The Tank guns were or are smoothbores shooting sabots...so don't think they are inaccurate in a smoothbore bbl

Default HEARING ALOT OF TALK ABOUT...

When things were introduced/invented/commercially available/ or played around with by a gun crank tinkerer or wildcater. Not to mention dimension variations gun to gun, mfgr to mfgr, country to country. Lot's of THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS comments stated by several "that's the facts Jacks" going on, assuming they have fired EVERY ammo type from EVERY shotgun ever built. Shotgun standardization of chokes/ammo came on the scene "fairly recently" GUESSING app 1920's ??? Some fun "facts" I've found quickly from a simple yahoo search, if you want to believe everything on the net to be true.
1st rifled barrels app 1498 (Kentucky rifles), 1st rifled slugs app 1849 (truewestmagazine.com), Breneke RIBBED slugs (if you want to consider ribbed to be rifled) Germany 1898, Foster slugs 1931 patented in 1947. I found no info on the intro dates of RIFLED SHOTGUN BARRELS. Seeing as how rifling has been played around with since the 1400's, IDK & would not venture A GUESS as to when the first rifled shotgun bbl was made by a wildcatter, let alone became commercially available. SO to make a sweeping blanket statement then declare it as FACT, without so much as a link to the reference source, "as far as I know, IMO, to the best of my knowledge" raises a red flag for me & has my Bull squat meter in the red zone.

As a side note and a bit off topic, I find it interesting that states which were "always" shotgun only states for deer such as Iowa, Ohio and I believe Indiana have now progressed to allowing rifles chambered in straight walled "pistol" cartridges. This stems from, I assume, the fact that shotguns were considered limited range weapons. Funny how rifled shotgun barrels using sabot rounds has turned that all on ear. Here in Wisconsin, the southern 60% of the state was shotguns with slugs only. Then handguns were allowed in shotgun zones about 10 years ago. Forging ahead, about 5 years ago the entire state became open to rifles with a few local government entities excluding them. Rifles in Wisconsin are not limited to straight walled cases incidentally. Guess what! There have been no upticks in accidental shootings in the former shotgun only zones. How about that!! This is because the notion of shotguns being "limited range" weapons and therefore inherently safer in actual field situations is both outdated and even more importantly, BOGUS. The controlling factors are hunter awareness and almost as importantly, terrain. Here in Wisconsin, as in Michigan, we have approximately 550,000 hunters hitting the woods. This makes for a pretty good test sample over the years.

It's funny how things almost evolve in a circular course. Also, how sometimes the people in charge of the troops are generally about three steps behind the learning curve.

Bruce
