Mastodon Ivory for my daily carry Colt
Always wanted to put Ivory on my daily carry 1957 vintage National Match. Could not justify or in my mind risk a $400 to $600 set of grips that will probably get cracked or chipped in everyday use. Found this set of Mastodon Ivory at little online gun auction. Left grip has a crack repair at the top screw hole. Who ever had these originally probably did not fit them prior to tightening the screws down. Three minutes with sharp knife and they fit perfectly. $58 total cost that included my low bid (did not dream that it would win) & 20% internet bid fee & insured postage. I like them allot.

Besides the beauty of the mastodon ivory, there is the fascination of how old it is. I'd love to have knife with scales of that material.
Very nice indeed.

I actually have a knife with Mastodon Ivory. Not really scales but a big solid piece of a tusk for the handle. A little large for daily carry.

I would like to hear a little about your barbeque gun. I assume you are using 185 great bullets with the lightened slide and all. My understanding is heavier bullets will crack the lightened slide. What are the specs on the spring that you are running? What brand and type of ammunition are you using and has it been reliable?

I purchased the Colt NM in the 60's used. As far as I can tell it is still stock out of the box. I have always shot (for the most part) factory Remington or Winchester target ammo in it. It has been shot countless thousands or rounds over the years. I also shoot & carry it with factory Remington Golden Saber ammo. Never had a failure to feed or any issues with it. I just keep it clean and shoot it. I do only run Colt Factory pre Pony 7 round magazines. I know allot of folks that are really into 1911 platform pistols that have boxes of parts and springs that they change out in order to get smaller and smaller groups. My NM will hold a better group from a Ransom Rest than I have ever been able to duplicate shooting off hand. Yes the blue is well worn and the collector value is gone but it was purchased for less than $50 and I bought it to shoot not as a collector. With the new grips I may have to upgrade my old worn (really worn and ragged) Bianchi holster to something nicer. Will be really hard because it is very comfortable and I do not worry about scuffing it.
