A good friend of mine is wanting to sell his 1975 Colt Agent. It's a nickeled gun, and from the photo he sent, it appears in good shape. He's asking $600. I know nothing about these, and I don't know if the nickel or shrouded ejector adds to the value. A search of auction sites brings no help. What's a fair price for me to offer him?

Hard to tell from just a photo. Looks like it's been carried a lot from the wear on the finish. What operating shape is it in? Is the action in time? Is there any end shake? Is there any rust under the grip? I would pay less for a carry piece than for a collector's item.I might go $450, but then again, I don't really want it and certainly not in that shape. But that's me. YMMV.

Value is what the good friend wants/needs for it, and what you
are willing to pay. This is probably not a lot of help, but I would
not take $600 for my old parkerized Agent.

Now THAT, Phil, is what I call a carry piece!! I wouldn't give it up for $600 either. May seem ridiculous to some, but things that I've had and used for decades somehow become 'friends.'

Phil, is the front sight removed or is there a blemish on the photo? Good shooting!

P.S. FWIW, I saw a NIB old-style Agent at a show for $700, but that was 4 years ago, IIRC.

If you want it, $600 is not a terrible price. Personally I would not go that high as I am not fond of the later DS and Agent revolvers with extractor rod shrouds.

I’ve been offered $500 for my 1968 Cobra (unshrouded ejector rod) that I turned down if that helps. It’s blued and in great shape w/the exception of the bobbed hammer which detracts from the value. I don’t want to sell b/c this was my first off-duty gun that cost me the princely sum fo $85 in 1968.

Agents came Parkerized. So this gun has been modified, in not a good way. It wouldn't have collectors value anymore, and if bought, should be thought of as a shooter. This looks to be maybe a $400 gun, tops IMO. Good luck.

Agents came parkerized after 1982. Prior, they came blue or nickel plated.

I remember when they first came out. Really Rough finish from what I remember. The Chief Special was to me a much nicer gun (back then we had names for them, like Combat Magnum, Combat Masterpiece and Chief Special) The Agent was to us a really cheapened down Dick Special. The Combat Masterpiece also came in .22 LR we didn't know they were Model 18's back then .
The Model 27 was the "357 on the .44 frame". This was late 60's early 70's when Super Vels were da bomb and all the cops carried Combat Magnums with target grips with the NOPD steel butt plate on the bottom. a "Model 66" was impossible to get (for some reason they never called them stainless Combat Magnums). The disenfranchised had to make do with the 15's , 10's and 67's. Dad bought himself and all the boys (4 total) 67's. I had to take **** from my friend who's dad bought him a 19.

What’s condition of nickel ? If it’s 95% or better overall I’d buy it.

The nickel finish does not look that good, and the hammer looks dull, perhaps from rust. Check cylinder timing, dry fire the gun and see if there is any movement in the cylinder before releasing the trigger. If there is any movement in the cylinder while the trigger is held back, the timing is off, and gun will need to be repaired, probably by Colt. Also, remove the grips and check for rust. If the gun passes these tests, I'd offer no more than $400 for it. If the nickel is flaking, it probably isn't worth that much.

It was made in 1960 and shipped to a dealer in Lima. The Blue Book states the Colt's Agent's were first made in 1962. My letter states otherwise. I'll try to get a pic of the letter and post tomorrow.

The Colt Agent was introduced in 1955. The first generation with the exposed ejector rod was produced until 1972.

Neither removed or blemish. I have a small red insert in the
front sight ramp and it kinda blended in with the background
making it look as if it was gone.
