Winchester 63
Today I went to buy a new battery for my lawn mower and ended up with this Winchester model 63 from 1949. I've had a few over the years but they always had extra holes and a lot of wear, couldn't pass this one up at a friend's shop. I'll be breaking it in this afternoon.
I had no idea lawn mower batteries were so expensive.

Yeah, those are neat. I need to find one to go with my M62, but never see them around here.

Winchester Model 63
I've had my Model 63's for over 45 years, absolutely fantastic shooters. Went to a LGS last weekend. An exhibitor had one for sale for $350, 4 digit serial number, later 30's mid 40's side mount weaver scope, bunch of extra holes, finish was about 50%.
That was the 1st. 63 I have seen, at a show in about 2 years.

Went out back and she shoots great. Didn't even have to move the sights. Dinked metal out to about 65 yards in the snow.
I think that most of these were well used and thus people tailored them for their use. Hard to find one in original condition for sure.

Very nice! It's amazing that a .22 rifle can make it almost 70 years and still be like new. Everything I see looks right as rain.

Lucky find.
With that white stuff on the ground, you won't need the mower battery for a few more months. The 63...you need that right now!

That's pretty close to the one I found in a local auction last fall. 1946 vintage. Looked great, chamber was gunked up with old dried up oil, but once cleaned it shot flawless. Still need to get it out and get zero settled at 25 yds, but it should be real close. Maybe the weather will break soon.

Fun little rifles. That one is in beautiful condition!
I sold one of mine off after plinking with it for quite a few summers.
I had restocked it with some nice wood but never got around to finishing the rest of the project up.
Finally did that and now I don't own it anymore.

I have the Taurus knockoff of the Model 63. It's well made but not quite up to Winchester's standard. But it works fine. I bought it maybe 10-12 years ago. The wood on it was very plain and not well finished. I sanded it down, re-stained it and applied some Tru-Oil. That made it look much more like a Winchester. I don't think Taurus made very many of them. The last one (Taurus) I saw at a gun show had a $600 price tag on it. I think I paid around $200 for mine.

That 63 looks absolutely perfect. I wouldn't have been able to pass it up either. Prices have gone out of sight on original untouched examples. I was fortunate enough to get this one several years ago. I was told it was factory scoped, but was dropped and damaged the original scope and was replaced with this Redfield. I wish it could be lettered, but those records were destroyed. It is a 1953 model and yes it has been drilled and tapped as they weren't grooved until the last few years models. All the barrel roll marks are correct and there are no dovetails for iron sights cut in the barrel. It can't be authenticated, but I feel it is original. I love Winchester .22s.
The very light scratch that can be seen running down the center of the receiver in the last picture is it's only defect.

I don't have anything against black guns but one thing for sure, they never will have the charisma these old ones made out of wood and blued steel have.
Nice find;congrats. Now I think I'm going in my garage to see if my lawn mower needs something!
