Looking on some input for setting up my Marlin 1894 .44 magnum. It currently has the factory buckhorn (?) Sights.
I see the peep sights most install with the factory front sight, but I was thinking a small fiber optic would make it easier to find that front sight faster.
Anyone play with these carbines and already have the sights all figured out?
 
There are several makers of peep sights. I went with Skinner for my 39a. They offer taller front sights if needed. They also offer a fiber optic front sight. I did not go with the fiber optic, but in my old age, I can see that is probably pretty handy.
 
The original sights are still on my 1894 but my old tired eyes require a 4 power scope.
 
Skinner sights have a large following for the 1894 but they tend to require a taller front sight. Ranger Point Precision just came out with a new peep for the 1894 that sits low enough that it uses the original front sight. I installed one on my 1894CS and it had plenty of adjustment range with the factory front sight.
 
I was just about to recommend RPP, for front & rear. I have an 1894 32-20 with front & rear FO, William's makes them I think. One of them has a Skinner rear and a FO front, one has Ghost ring rear and standard front. They all work better than the factory sights with my eyes.
 
Mine came with a rail installed by previous owner, so I put a cheap red dot tube sight on it and works really well. For me just about as easy to pick up as quick as the open sight and much more accurate
 
The nicest thing is most models of Marlin 1894 come with the receiver already drilled and tapped for just about every sight system made!

On my Guide Gun, I use an A/O Scout rail and can add peep sights anytime I desire them. On the 1894 CL, I have a Tang sight by Lyman. My best friend has the Williams receiver type of peep sight.

I put a Burris Fast-Fire on mine works great, my 90yo father gets a kick out of shooting it, the Burris is just the thing for old eyes.
 
I have 3 Marlin levers I hunt with. A 1895 & 336 Marauder. Both
these don't have ramps. They both have Lyman reciver sights
and Marble Patridge fronts. My 1894 also has Lyman reciever
sight and I changed front to a blade and removed the hood. My
eyes aren't the best but plain blade is easiest for me to see. I
can't do fiber optics. They are "fuzzy" to me- optical illusion I
guess. I got excited when we got rifle deer season and scoped
the 94 & 95. They shot well but I decided I didn't like scopes on
levers and went back to reciever sights. For deer hunting in
thick cover a reciver sight is hard to beat, with whatever front
that you can see well.
 
I installed Skinner sights on my Marlin lever guns. They are very rugged, and have a ramp that fits existing receiver holes. My front sight is a 3/32" brass bead, which is easier to see than the standard 1/8" size. You generally need a taller blade, based on where the rifle shoots with the OEM blade.

A FO front sight would be more visible under more conditions, but somewhat more easily damaged. I would have gone that way, given more thought, and less devotion to "authenticity."

I also replaced the floppy OEM trigger with one by Wild West.

I have the factory sights on the 16" TALO 1894 I've owned for about 20 years. Were I interested in changing, I would strongly consider those Skinner aperture type sights. In any case, I've mounted a Leupold M8-4X compact scope on mine;)

I recently picked up a used 1894. It’s a 2017 production. I have only shot it once and it seems plenty accurate if I do my part. I struggled picking up that front sight so I ordered up the Skinner rear sight with their bear buster with white face front sight. The sights arrived and I hope to get them installed this weekend along with a Ranger Point Precision medium loop lever.

I’m not sure that I’ll have time to get to the range this weekend but definitely by the following weekend. I’ll report back with my impressions.
 
I like tang sights but don't like them on my levers I use for
deer hunting. With the exception of Savage 99 & Rem 14-141s.
The behind the hammer position is award for me to shoot running
deer. Might be because I got poked under the eye once with a
tang sight.
 
I have a Williams Foolproof on my 1971 vintage 1894 .44 mag. Presently using the factory front sight but I'd like slightly larger ivory bead set in a post front.
