Default Full Size 9mm for Home Defense ?'s

Full Size 9mm Pistols for Home Defense
As stated these will be for inside the home self defense . For CCW one might arguably want a smaller gun . As of now I've 4 .357 mags in that role that I wish to replace . If you've ever had the need to cut loose with a .357 indoors you get my point . Rest of the uninvited guest greeters will be 1911's in 45acp .
My criteria is full size , 9mm +p capable , visible good sights , a decent trigger & it must fit my hand & not a 1911. Subjective as most things are about a handgun . Not crazy about DA/SA nor do Glocks fit my hand . What I've found so far :
1) Walther PPQ M2 5” upgraded Dawson sights , damn good trigger for striker gun .
2) Canik TP9SF Elite 4.5” , Warne Tactical sights , even nicer trigger than Walther . Have heard these have problems with breaking firing pins , plus they're imported by Century .
3) HK VP9 4 or 5” . Haven't had the chance to check one of these out yet , but have heard they're nice .
4) Steyr L or M9 , again aint had my mitts on one either . Low bore axis , different sights for sure . Have heard grip is like trying to hold a 2 X 4 .
I'm sure there's other choices , but I don't want to have to do action work , replace sights etc. to get what I want . Any suggestions ?

Since it's going to be a home-defense gun and not necessarily a carry gun, the Sig 320 XFive is super nice, and the M17 also fits your requirements (this is a sweet shooter IMHO). Also, the 2.0 M&P is excellent, but if you don't want to change your sights you are limited to the Tru-glo TFX sights, 4.25" model right now.

I have a Tristar C100 (made by Canik) and it is a genuinely great pistol. It was my bedside pistol for a while, but lately I've been buying up some of the .40s folks are giving away right now - $385 for a H&K USP Compact is hard to pass up, and I paid under $300 for a SIG P226. The P226 is taking over bedside for the Canik.

Anyway, my point is I vote for the Canik. I don't even like striker fired guns and I'll likely end up with a TP9SF at some point.

The gun I'd recommend that isn't on the list is the king of all 9mms - the Browning Hi Power. My #2 would be a CZ75 (or the Tristar C100!) - I know you said no DA/SA, but it can be carried cocked and locked so DA/SA operation isn't a requirement.

For me, it's a Glock 17 considering what's currently available. I would try to adapt to it if I could. Regardless, being polymer, it's pretty easily modified if desired.

Something to consider...

Hold off on the H&K VP9 and get the -B version, which has an American magazine release, thus fixing the VP's biggest flaw.

Or grab a 9mm 1911 if you can't have a Glock 17 or 34.

I edited down your post to the essential information.

I've owned 3 of the 4 pistols on your list.

Canik TP9SF = Sold off because I owned a HK VP9. Triggers on both were excellent. Canik held more rounds in it's standard capacity magazine.

HK VP9 = Sold off because I still shot a Glock 17/19 better. I learned to shoot semi-auto pistol using a Glock 19. Excellent trigger. Excellent design and engineering went into the grip & customizable grip panels. Cocking ears on the rear of the slide are nice.

Styer M9 = Sold off because I never shot it often and it was another polymer framed, striker fired handgun. The grip is quite comfortable. The grip angle and grip radius allow for a very low bore axis. The trapezoidal sights worked well. The slide is quite wide for a 9mm. It's as wide as a Glock 20/21.

I have shot a Walther PPQ M2. I liked it, just not enough to buy it. Out of the 4 mentioned, I'd rank trigger in order of preference:

1. Walther PPQ M2.
2. HK VP9.
3. Canik.
4. Styer.

I have medium sized hands. For contextual reference to qualify my opinion, the only reason I can shoot a full size Glock chambered in 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 Sig, .45 GAP is because I learned to shoot semi auto on that size frame. I shoot the Gen4 and Gen5 without any backstraps. Otherwise the full size pistol grip that feels overall the best in my hands is a CZ75. Of the 4 you mentioned, I'd rank grip in order of preference:

1. HK VP9
2. Walther PPQ M2
3. Styer.
4. Canik.

Of the 4 you listed I'd knock the Styer and Canik out of the running. Neither the Styer or Canik are at the level of an HK VP9 or Walther PPQ M2, nor do the Styer or Canik enjoy as much after market sight support as the HK VP9 or Walther PPQ M2.

If you have medium sized hands go for the HK VP9 because the grip is more customizable. If hand size isn't a factor, go for the Walther PPQ M2 because it has a slightly better trigger. Handling, controls, perceived recoil are a wash between the two.

If you're willing to look outside the 4 listed, I'd suggest checking out a S&W M&P 2.0 and oddly enough a Ruger SR9.

I have done exactly that. A 19X and a G34. Both with factory steel night sights.

I'm just gonna throw this out there: Sig P250. 9mm; has optional night sights; can shoot +P; DAO trigger, so it's like a revolver's trigger (I haven't had a chance to try one, but revolver fans seem to like it).

A couple of downsides: 1) 1st generation guns weren't very reliable, but from what I've read the 2nd generation guns got the bugs worked out; 2) they're no longer in production, which means they may be harder to find.

I realize it doesn’t fit all of your criteria, but were I in your shoes, I would buy myself a nice P226 of whatever decorative flavor suits and be happy. They are great guns. If you want something smaller, maybe a P228 or P225?

And they use the same interchangeable frames as a P320, so you can easily mod it to be full size or compact.

I’ve got a full sized 9mm m&p 2.0 for house duty. The trigger is nice, 17+1 is a lot of bullets. The wife can handle it also. It’s a great shooter.
Good luck,
David.

The Canik is in my night stand with 2 20 round magazines. It takes turns with my M&P9.

M&P 9L, the 5" Canik or the 5" Walther would be among my first choices. I own a Steyr M9 (one of the originals from the early 2000s) and I shoot it very well. Any of the recent Ruger polymer guns will likely work for you, although some say the rear of the frame on the American interferes with their grip.

A forum member posted a photo of his CZ 75 type pistol, with a silencer and 18 round mag. Seems good for that use.

The newer Glock pistols such as the 17 Gen 5 or the G45 without the finger groves may fit your hand better.

The CZ 75 can be found in single action only. The EAA Witness Elite Match is a full size all metal gun in single action with a grip like the CZ. Fine gun.

Ruger’s Security 9 is a good gun at a great price. And then there is Springfield XD series which also a good gun.

+1 on the Sig 226. I have the tacops with 4-20 round mags. It’s a great pistol that is reliable that I would trust my life with. If you don’t like the DA/SA, go with a DAO 226 or 229. My 2 cents.

Sounds as though a trip to the rental gun range (or trying examples from your friends) is in order. No bad choices mentioned but you have to get along with it.

boatbumm101 Maybe a Mossberg 20ga super bantam would be a better choice for home defense that can be handled by kids and women that are not handgun folks . I'm all for keeping as much the same as possible for any one that dare ask " What They Should Buy " and since you want to replace a lard butt 357mag revolver for carry how about a M&P 2.0 9mm compact for carry and a 2.0 5" for home or just the compact for both . Big boys should be able to figure this out rather than ask the masses and throw out a pile of choices . Go shoot some gun and big boy up and pick what YOU like .

I've got a 6906 that's with me all the time possible. 12 rds 124 gr HST moving @ around 1000 fps should be adequate except for the occasional Mongol horde. Things getting dicey up in the Central time zone? Joe

Well this is just my opinion. My opinion is based on my experiences and peoples experience differs. So moving forward for home defense why not just stick with one of the magnums? If you're more concerned about hearing loss because you shot a magnum indoors vs a 9mm then perhaps you haven't shot guns long enough...
I have participated in indoor & outdoor IDPA and USPSA matches for many years. I have personally witnessed guys "forgetting" to put on their ears and within the first few shots, realizing they forgot something.

I've seen their reactions from a 380 up to a .45cal and they all winced the same. Hahahaha.

Ok lets be serious..... For home protection I am a big fan of double/single action pistols such as the Beretta mod 92 or CZ75. Ect... With these types of pistols you can tell visually by looking at them if the hammer is down or "cocked N locked". To me, a double/single action pistol makes for a great home defense because of the "safety" feature of that first heavier double action trigger. For that same reason I say, stick to one of the magnums and load up with Remington Green & White box 38 special 125gr +P JSP.

If you’re determined to rule out DA/SA pistols, then I suggest the S&W M&P9 2.0. If, however, you’d consider a good DA/SA then I suggest a CZ 75BD. It has a decocker instead of a 1911 like safety- and you seem to want to rule out 1911s. The 75BD decocks to half cock and the DA starts from half cock giving a shorter pull. Plus the SA has more than average take up which means the pistol was designed so the DA and SA were more similar in pull than many DA/SAs (Sig or Beretta). It took me a while to figure that out. At first I thought the SA was an unreasonably long pull, but once I understood the designer’s intent, as similar a pull for DA and SA as possible, it made perfect sense. Plus the 75 is an all steel frame pistol that is known for its accuracy and - most important for HD in my opinion- reliability. The out of the box triggers on new 75BDs can be a bit rough. However the triggers wear in after some shooting and become great triggers. You’d want to practice with your HD guns anyway- right?

As far as a reliable (again my no 1 criteria) pistol, Sig P226 CPOs are a great value. If you can find a DAK model DA/SA becomes a non issue.

My three favorite 9mms for ergonomics are the Browning HP, the S&W Model 39-2 and the Kahr Arms Model T9. I'm also very pleased with my recently acquired Beretta M-9 although your hand size should at least be medium for this gun. The latter gun can hold up to 18 rounds without an extended magazine. I would not want to find myself at the wrong end of any of these handguns.

The newer commercial Beretta 92s ( from about 2000 onward) with the radius'ed backstrap ..... combined with ultra-thin G-10 grips; feels much smaller in the hand and has a shorter trigger reach. If you have large hands the regular G-10 grips may be better.

Check out Mec-gar's flush fit 18round mag for the Beretta92..... another great upgrade!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have a 915 or 59xx try the straight backstrap grips.... to me they give these guns more of a Browning HP feel in the hand.

Check out Mossberg's 510 Youth model; 20gage, 3+1, short 18.5 inch barrel, short 34" OAL and short LOP (10.5-11.5")......I like the EZ-reach forearm, and tang safety.... add 5 extra rounds on the butt (3 buck 2 slugs) True-Viz Fiber Optic front sight and you've got a great family friendly home defense or truck gun.

S&W M639. Mine has a very smooth trigger-out of the box.

My bedroom pistol is a Walther P99QA.
The trigger pull is always 5.6 lbs.
qa stands for quick action.
All Walther and Smith&Wesson needs are now in Ft Smith, Arkansas.

Agree with the Hi Power.

For what it's worth, Browning doesn't make the High Power anymore and used guns are currently going at a huge premium for some reason.

Out of your list, I suspect the HK VP-9 will fit your hand better. I have multiple Glocks - full sized (17) fit my hand better than sub-compact (19) and comparing it to the HK - the HK fits better. The issue with the HK is the mag release is at the trigger guard and you push down. If you train and are in a stressful situation, you are going to rely on muscle memory and you won't find that mag release. It's the only reason I am considering selling mine.

Honestly, I really like the Glock 43 with night sights. Yeah, it's only 6 rds out of the box for CCW, but you can get extended magazines and grips that have 9 rounds - that seems to be enough to get me to my safe for other options.

The only way you're going to find what fits your hand is to go to a range that rents multiple options, and give them a try.

While my favorite full size 9mm is the SIG P210-6, my favorite home defense 9mm is the SIG Sauer P226. While mine are DA/SA, they do make a single action only version of the P226 Legion.

Small detail. Browning never made a Browning Hi-Power.

Sounds to me like you pretty much got home defense covered already.

According to your criteria, about all that's left are striker fired plastic and Hi-Powers. I have no doubt which one I'd choose.

C'mon now, be honest. I think you're just looking for an excuse to buy a new 9mm ain't ya?

If those are the only pistols that fit your hand, which is the only variable I see outside of good firearm judgment, get a barbed wire wrapped baseball bat . . .

You don't need to worry about the effect of the noise decibel level in the house if your fight or flight meter is pinging at max because of an armed intruder, so scrapping the 357s for 9mm isn't necessary.

Buy the gun you want; but first, update your home security.

Deadbolt locks with longer bolts and strike plates secured with 3" screws along with better exterior and interior lighting are better home security investments.

Motion sensor nightlights are much better than night sights when placed in the hallway and just inside the BR doorway when you are roused from sleep in the middle of the night.

A simple, inexpensive door stopper security bar on the BR door can add seconds or minutes to your personal space defense plan that give you time to call the police and arm yourself.

My choices are the S&W Governor and S&W model 3953 because they are simple to operate when I'm stressed to the max.

M&P with a 4.25" barrel, a newer 1.0 with the better trigger or a 2.0... My 'house gun' is a used M&P 1.0 that I paid $325 for, tossed on some night sights and a crimson trace laser grip I bought on armslist on the cheap... My EDC is a M2.0 4" compact or a Shield 9mm, I like to keep all my defensive guns similar.... I would like to add a surefire light on the rail at some time down the road... I keep the gun in a fast access safe in the bedroom closet... So my wife can use it if I am away or if the s really hits the fan I guess I can dual wield and fight my way to the gun safe to get my 870 and Bushmaster...

A handgun only serves as a back-up to a pump SG which is my main HD gun.
