Default Brownells Retro AR10

All the Retro models are on sale right now, and there's a code for an additional 10% off.

I really wanted to get the 5.56 M16 model, but...

I ordered the .308 AR10 in all black.

Such a poor attempt at a replica AR10. The look and function is NOTHING close to the original. Check out the Brownells brown polymer stock and then compare it to pictures from original Armalite AR10s. They look NOTHING alike. It’s as if Brownells got the cheapest Fischer Price stocks they could in a flat, pale color.

A good idea on paper but the execution is horrible. But I guess folks do not care, so it is what it is.

I think it's cool. Many of the retro guns being made today are similar - not exact replicas.

Weren't the original stocks fiberglass? That would be hard to replicate for the small amounts needed for this run of guns.

More importantly, what's the extra 10% code?

It was PTB and was on their page at the top, but I don't see it now.

You can try it and see if it still works.

I like them. Even if they aren't exact recreations, they do have a nostalgic look to them, and I like old stuff I guess. My SP1 is my favorite AR, is it my best? Probably not.

Had one also- on a Central Ky Arms receiver, milled steel and my god was it heavy. Stocks had been painted green- sold it for a lot of coin.

About 20 years ago our department surplused the upper halves from its SP1s and M16A1s to replace them with M4 upper halves, since the M16A1s and SP1s were a bit too long to fit in weapon racks and were not ideal patrol rifles.

I bought one of each and eventually put them on NoDak Spud NDS-16A1 lowers. NoDak Spud makes the forgings for the Brownells retro rifles, but I'm not sure who does the machining and finish work for Brownells.

Back when I built mine, NDS had retro lowers in stock. Now they are a back order item and the back order time has been 6-8 months for a few years now.

Both of my rifles will shoot 5 shot 1.5 MOA groups at 100 yards with Hornady 55 gr FMJs at M193 velocities and they are two of my favorite AR-15s. The original M16 and M16A1 rifles were, light, well balanced, accurate and ballistically efficient, capable of first round hits on torso sized targets at 350 meters (382 yards). I was strongly biased against the M16A1 when I was issued one, but it grew on me over time, and these builds satisfied my desire to own something similar.

I also built this using another slick side upper. With M16A1 style triangular carbine length hand guards, a 16" pencil barrel and a carbine length entry stock, it ends up weighing 5.6 pounds with empty magazine and sling - about as light as you can make a 16" carbine without going with a polymer lower.

With a .22 LR conversion kit and magazine in addition to the .223 bolt and magazine, it makes a very versatile survival rifle:

The Hornady 55 gr FMJ is longer with a decent BC for its class like the "Type B" bullet stoner developed with Sierra for .223. Those bullets are in contrast to the shorter and less efficient "Type A" bullet that Remington designed for the XM193 ball ammo, in order to avoid going from a 1-14 to a 1-12 twist in the M16.

That change to a less efficient bullet with a lower BC resulted in the XM193 round losing excessive velocity and failing the steel helmet (10 gauge steel plate) penetration requirement at 500 yards.

That led to the powder and pressure issues as Remington tried to increase muzzle velocity to meet the penetration requirement, while staying under the maximum average pressure limit. They failed and had to get a waiver of the pressure requirement for the production M193.

The irony of course is that the US Army switched to 1-12 twist anyway, and if they'd just stuck with the Stoner/Sierra designed bullet they would have avoided years of development and pressure issues.

Mine was quite light!I know that 2 countries gave orders for original AR10(Congo and Portugal)and both were made out of alum alloy(somebody correct me if wrong).
By the then standard, they weren't heavy. Now,of course if you compare with a 5.56's weight, that's another game.
Are you sure it was an original AR10(not poking you in the ribs!I'd just like to know).

Picked up the AR10 from the FFL today.

Initial impression is that it's well put together. Well, I'm no expert but it looks, feels, and functions great. It's tight like a new gun but not so tight it takes two hands to operate the charging handle.

The finish was cause for some alarm but I figured it would wipe off with some oil, and it did. A quick wipe down with some CLP and the withish haze is gone.
