Does anyone have a general price range that this C&R Colt D.A. 38 mfg in 1899 might be worth? Blueing is brownish blue, lock up "fairly tight" and grips are pretty decent with one small chip. Might it have any collector value in this condition or would it have to be in exceptionable condition?

It is a decent example of a commercial New Army and Navy .38 DA. It is not a high demand collector's item at present; the period military issue guns go for more but are usually well-used. Perhaps $400 or so?

A friend had the 1903 variant. A .357 Magnum round will fit in the cylinder. But DON'T fire that load in them!

That answers my question. Thanks. I saw it for $300 and a Colt Commander w/US Army stamped on grip frame about 1900 mfg date for the same price. I guess old doesn't always=value. I'll pass and leave it for someone else. At my age I shouldn't be acquiring any more stuff I won't use.:)

I had a case where an armed robber had one from the mid 1890s. He was using .38 Super +P ammunition in it. Funny thing, the cylinder didn't split, but the barrel did.

The armed robber; he ended face down on the pavement with the old Cold revolver in one hand and a sawed-off shotgun in the other. His mother filed a lawsuit against the city claiming that the Police Department had been harassing her son for years, as evidenced by his long criminal record. Just for your amusement.
