38 Special +P In A 357 (newbie question)
Hello everyone. Thank you for the help in painting my front sight. It is now bright green. I have a question. I recently bought my first revolver. It is an EAA Windicator in 357. Help me understand something. Both EAA in an email and the owners manual tell you not to shoot 38+P in the gun. The gun is a 357 which is more powerful than 38+P. Why can I not shoot 38+P in that gun?
Copied from email:
We do not recommend using +P ammo with any of our firearms. (Please see pg 19 of your owners manual.)
From owners manual:
AMMUNITION (CARTRIDGES) NOTICE
We specifically disclaim responsibility for any damage, personal injury or death occurring in connection with or as the result of the use of European American Armory Corp. revolvers with faulty, nonstandard, remanufactured, Super-Vel, +P, hand-loaded or reloaded ammunition, used cartridges or cartridges other than factory cartridges for which the firearm was originally chambered.

I never heard of this before so I am also interested in the reason for this.

It’s just a general manual covering all caliber chambering’s in that model. I think it is simply a blanket warning, not instructing you to avoid .38 + P in your .357. .357 mag is loaded to far greater pressures than .38+P rounds.
I took some screen shots from the manual that I attached. Congratulations on your first revolver.

Shoot all the .38 Special, +P or not, that you want through that gun. Recognize that you might need to do a little extra brushing of the cylinder holes in order to eliminate a possible build up of crud from the shorter .38 Special case. Not a problem, just something to check on from time to time.

Thank you very much. I bought this revolver because it was what I could afford new. My two dream revolvers are the S&W 642 and the S&W 686 3 inch.

You have good taste—my 2.5 686 is probably the best all-around revolver I have. I have read good things about the EAA revolvers. For the pricing they are hard to beat.

If you read that warning a bit closer it's mainly about "other than factory cartridges", ie: some super hot reload that goes well beyond factory specs.
I guess similar to Glocks warnings about lead boolits.

Thank you all for the support. Here I am with an EAA revolver and yet not one person here has given me a hard time about it. Great community.

Oh my - an EAA... just kidding. Congrats on the new wheel gun. I'm guessing it will serve you well.

That paragraph was written by a lawyer, not an engineer.
You will drive yourself to distraction trying to find the logic, except for "if your gun blows up and takes part of your hand, we will try our best to blame the ammunition so we don't have to pay you."
Notice the warning includes all handloads.

They're Back !!!!
Not headed by Lee Jurras but he gave his blessing for them to use the " Super Vel" name.
How well I remember loading the original 357 , 110 gr. JHP's over obscene amounts of 2400 and Unique powder , a Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag. and shooting water filled gallon milk jugs... the exploding jugs were Spectacular ! Great fun .

Good choices. As said before, clean the cylinders where the shorter .38s leave a carbon ring before shooting .357s again and you'll be fine. The EEA is a sturdy gun, you'll be fine. Congratulations on starting your love affair with revolvers!

Alright, so in summery forget the lawyer talk, shoot LAX range grade ammo in it because it is $90 for 500 rounds, shoot whatever will fit in the gun, and do not try and hammer in rounds for the S&W 500 magnum. Ok got it. LOL It sure did not make since to me about the 38+P ammo. The gun is a 357 so it should handle any lesser ammo just fine.

Congrats on the new revolver. I shoot 38 spec+P in my 357 mag all the time, I'd agree with the other posters, it's more about 357 +p than anything. Enjoy your new adventure.

Freedom Arms has a similar warning, at least they did when I was looking.
They may be concerned about bullets hitting the start of the throat. This would be the same for all MGN revolvers. FA revolvers are as strong as any. They want the user to order a 38 SPL Cylinder for those cartridges. Costs about as much as some complete revolvers.
Best,
Rick

May I ask what you paid? I won't say any more about the gun.
I'm just wondering what options there might have been if you'd compared Taurus or a good used gun of a major brand. I understand that if you are unfamiliar with handguns, you'd be hesitant to buy used.
I realize that financial limitations make for difficult choices.
I hope that your finances improve, and in the meantime, you can learn a lot about revolvers here.

Yup... the other guys have covered it. Eaa or someone else in the line doesnt want to pay an editor to change verbiage for each gun. 99.5% of my shooting is done with 38+p. out of guns built for .357. If you dont reload it could be a fair cost savings and I dont find it necessary to beat up my gun or myself with .357 for all my shooting. I iwll usually end each session with 2-3 cyclinders of 357 and the rest all 38+p. Enjoy!!
Mastering a revolver will soon be like mastering a stick shift car. You will be one of those dudes in the Know!!

I've been shooting +P and +P+ in many .357 guns;I guess I'm in for a lot of problems coming up....after all these years doing so,maybe the problems will catch up with me someday.Guess I'm better not hold my breath until they do.My face might turn blue.
