Default Coonan?

Why hasn't Coonan made a semi auto 45 Colt pistol? The 357 seems to sell, and they make it in 45 Acp now. 45 Colt seems like a logical step. It's the same length as 357 magnum, and the same diameter as the 45 Auto, so what gives. Could probably put some pretty hot loads through it with the pressure the 357 endures.

The 357 frame is larger. So they have to manufacturer standard 1911 frames. Maybe retool?

If they’re successful, why jump into an already crowded 1911 market?

Hmmm.......Smells like the kind of thing troubled businesses do to get people to stop asking questions for a while about where their money is. Sort of the same thing as a restaurant that closes "for remodeling", never to be seen again.

I hope not! Coonan has been around for a while, but I do think their market is rather small, so they might be in financial distress.

Coonan was advertising a 45 auto rated to handle 45 Super, which would be expected of the company who makes the 357 magnum autoloader.

The problem Coonan had and has is price-point. A lot of people would LOVE to have a 357 auto, even a 30 Carbine auto, and for sure on their long frame size, even a 5.7x28! But Joe Average simply can't afford the buy-in for such guns.

I think the OP was asking about a .45 Colt, not a .45ACP.

It would be seriously niche, and given the vast power spread of factory .45 Colt ammo, a headache. There's everything from powderpuff cowboy loads to bear slayers. I think I'd rather just get a .460 Rowland if I wanted that upper end.

Coonan is an acquired taste and I doubt they have enough of a market to capriciously expand their offerings.

Would be a real Shame if Coonan stops production again. I bought a Coonan classic .357 mag about 2 years ago and still love it. I agree they are over priced but I have absolutely no regrets with mine. It's been super reliable and gets plenty of attention at the range.
