I bought a Ruger Security 9 a couple years ago, pretty cheap @ $300 or so new. It's not a target pistol as you guys know, but it's never failed that I can remember. It does fit my hand pretty good and shoots nice at 20-25 yards. It has a rail in front of the trigger guard so I thought what the heck! I found a really cheap laser sight/flash light combo online for like $40. (Yeah, top quality!) Anyhow, it's called DefendTek and would fit on my pistol. Has anyone ever heard of these and are they any good at all or should I just save my money and leave the pistol alone? Or is there something else I could consider? I kinda like the idea of a light on the gun. Heck, it even has a strobe mode "to confuse the attacker." The money doesn't mean much, but I wouldn't spend more than $80-90 on an inexpensive pistol, but $40, perhaps a couple cases of beer would be a better investment? Thanks! Jeff

Leave the gun alone.

I went through the gun mounted light/laser phase years ago. Reliable gun mounted lights and lasers are expensive and in mind don’t justify the expense.

Lasers can help in certain situations but not all and can become a crutch. In most self defense situations you will find your attacker extremely close. Too close for a laser to be effective. Point shooting in such an event will enable you to prevail.

A handheld light is better IMO. A strobe will blind you as well as your attacker in low light.

Keep it simple.

FWIW, I put a laser on my duty sidearm at the time, a Glock 21C, and never really used it even with qualification.

The primary goal was to turn it on (if possible) to intimidate a suspect. I did not get another when I changed to my S&W, as I did not think it was practical.

I hope you find this helpful.
