I think the new Python will effect the market for "shooter grade" older Pythons. The newer ones should be more "practical" shooters.
The market for really pristine older examples should still be there. As others have said, they were special guns in terms if fit, finish and historical American revolver manufacturing.
This is just my guess. Worth what you paid for it. Only time will tell.

I’ll likely buy a new python just because. However, my final decision will be made after I Inspect and shoot one at the SHOT Show media day.

While reading through this thread couple of thoughts have occurred to me.
I've long lusted after a 2.5 or 3" L-frame .357. But they're hard to come by, damned expensive and often have that stupid hole. If Colt builds their 2020 Python with a 2.5 or 3" barrel, I'll likely be a buyer.
If Colt wants to bring back the snake guns, my vote goes to the Diamondback. I love these! I have a 4" .38 and a 6" .22. If Colt was to make a 2" .38 and a 4" .22, I'd buy 'em in a heart beat!
See that Colt! Are you watching this?

All the Colt talk on the forum got me itching to take the OP to the range. Hadn't shot it a while. Took it out today. Shot some 158 gr lead round nose and some 130 gr FMJ. It is a great shooter. Lighter recoil than my K frame S&W .38s due to larger frame. When I first bought mine it had set for some time from previous owner. A little flitz bought the Colt bluing back nicely.

That just means that there will be more financial incentive to create "NIB" older Pythons that are actually shooter grade with a refinish, and fake box and papers from Sparta, TN.

What "historic provenance" attaches to a Python made in 2019/20?

The "Python" is a model that is iconic and dates back to 1955.
That's what the new one is based on.

The name Python dates back to 1955. The 2020 Python is an altogether different gun. It just looks like its predecessor and carries the old name.

That little barcode thingy won't bother me in the slightest, and I'm 60 years old.
If it does, I'll polish it out. There's still a serial number on the gun for those of you afraid of an ATF SWAT team fast roping into your house.

Well sure, we're all aware of that.
But it looks EXACTLY like the gun made in 1955 (on purpose)......Except it has a QR code on it.......kinda lame.

I'm not afraid of anything related to tracking or conspiracy theories.
I just think it looks like **** and serves no purpose on a gun known for its beauty.
It's like a nice leather jacket that has a barcode on it that you can't remove! It serves no purpose for the function or aesthetics of the gun! And it will probably be old tech way before the gun's life is over.

I have a buddy that has bought 4 of the new Pythons. They are unfired in the back of his safe. He is sure that Colt will discontinue them in the next few years. He plans on adding more Pythons every year. He is sure that once Colt discontinues them they will double in value overnight.
I tried to tell him about the stock market - he is a non-believer.

There are 6” 2020 Pythons on GB starting at $1,699 already bid over $2,200
Makes no sense to me.

Your friend may not realize that Colt needs civilian cash to survive as a business.I think Colt may soon be stormed with orders and request for more barrel length and more finish options.I can’t see a struggling company with such a long heritage like Colt discontinuing anything that is selling in the civilian market place.

I think Colt's return to the DA revolver market may just be the shot in the arm that company has desperately needed. Their wheel guns are selling.

My local guy is a Colt dealer and is working his distributors for one for me. He quoted $1475, just under MSRP. We’ll see how he does.

Mine came in today. With my military discount, it came in well under MSRP. It is an incredible piece:

I like th Packys better than the Lammys (laminated) stocks. Call me a “Goodyear Man” if you must. I swapped them the minute I got home. I’m no fan of laminated grips on revos.

Awesome! Congrats and most importantly, thank you for your service.
What do you think of the finish? I can't seem to tell in digital photos or videos....Is it really polished or just a semi-sheen?

Buy it if you like it. Don’t expect its value to rise, I doubt older ones will hold their present value either.
They won’t lose value like plastic guns, though. My prediction.

Tell him that the first time Colt came out with the Python it was cataloged for over 40 years!

At SHOT Show media, first in line to check out the new python. SWEEEEET!
Very smoooooth, no lock, refined and trigger and hammer are made from bar stock.
The only thing I found odd was lock up doesn’t happen until right at hammer fall.
After the dust settles, I’ll be looking for a 4.25 incher

Lockup at hammer fall is typical
of the Colt design with the
V-spring, i.e. the Python,
Detective Special, Diamondback,
etc.
I'd like to believe that the 2020
Python. will handle fast and "furious"
double action shooting on a regular
basis. But I doubt it.
I still don't think it'll be as rugged
as Smiths and Rugers.

Python Showing Off
CH4 - thank you for the Mini Range Review and nice Pictures.
I'm waiting for the Python 357Mag 4.25"bbl. I'm also waiting for
all to simmer down, and newness to wear off.

I dont ever hear anyone ever breaking a V spring, but I'll be the only one again, and say I have.
What a horrible design. Coil springs work so much better and I've never broken one.
Coil springs on an install are much easier too. As I've installed V springs and their tolerances and compression are different.
But what do I know. I just chute!

No one's mentioned the issues Colt Pythons are having yet? (i.e. light primer strikes and cylinder failing to revolve...) Or are members not aware of them?
