I saw a Winchester 94 in 30-30 with a 16” barrel for sale recently.

I’m not familiar with these at all, but believe that the 16” barrel model is referred to as the Trapper.

This one has been shot, but seems to be in good shape. No box or docs.

Are these desirable?

I couldn’t locate a comparable item on gb so I have no idea what they might be worth.

I’d appreciate any info the forum can offer on this.

In my area of the country they don’t sit in the sales rack long. They are $600-700 here used. I have the 44 mag pre safety. All of my buddies kids have taken the first deer with it. I’ve turned several Marlins in 30-30 into trappers for the same kids. Great guns light and fast handling.

Seems very handy compared to other 94’s I’ve used.

Since it’s a Winchester, it’s not amenable to a scope. It does have an aperture sight installed.

I just looked yesterday on GB for a Win 94 16" barrel 30-30. I think there were six. It is the only configuration I want.

*there are eight on GB. Some old, some new prices all over the place. One used AE model in decent shape has a BIN of $629. $1700 for a new old stock one. What price is it listed for if you mind?

If it is an AE model it should be drilled/taped. I am assuming it is not

I don’t know how to identify the AE version. This has the saddle ring and no safety, standard dimension lever.

They have it miss marked: they think it’s a Marlin 336. They sell black guns, primarily. They’ve got a $500 price on it.

BUY IT! See if they are still open and meet you there.

Not as many 30-30 trappers. Even a later version in good shape would be worth $500. That would not last a day here.

It says 94AE on barrel under rear sight if it is an AE.

You can easily mount a scope; the receiver is drilled and tapped from the factory but I can't see a scope as very practical on such a gun. I bought one of these guns new thirty years ago. Mine is in .45 Colt. I've yet to figure out what it's good for, but it shoots cast bullets so accurately, I can't part with it. Sighted in at 50 yards, the 255 grain bullet drops about 5" at 100 yards, probably not much flatter shooting than a handgun in the same chambering. A .30-30 should have a slightly better trajectory.

If it a top eject without a button safety on the frame, it’s an excellent gun. I’ve wanted one ever since I missed one years ago by going to the gun store a day late. I like them because they look like a SRC Trapper 94 that might have been special ordered in the old days with a shotgun butt. I see them online for $700-$800ish.

Mine is a 357 magnum. In have also seen 45 Colts, but never a 30-30.

Its accurate as heck and easy shooting. If I was to get a 30-30 I would want a long barrel. The Trapper, IMHO, is more suited to a handgun round.

I have two of the AE versions, one in 357 and the other in 45 Colt. Had one in 30-30 but it got away, don't remember if it was AE or not. Nice rifles and if I found an AE in 30-30 for $500 in nice shape it would go home with me. Very handy rifles and surprisingly accurate; I've made head shots on turkeys with the 357. Good luck.

They are very nice. It was my first 94 30/30. Got it in '81. Right in the time frame when Winchester was becoming US Repeating Arms. The box said USRA, but the rifle says Winchester.

I always take precautions

Yessir, buy it - I sold my Winchester M94 "collection" off some years ago to but other things but I did keep three pre-USRAC guns, a .375 Winchester Big Bore (pictured below), an old, pre-64, I think, rebarreled item in .25-35 (flattest shooting thing I ever saw!), and my first, pictured here, a M94 with a Williams peep sight. I think "aperture" sights are the way to go on these rifles if you don't want to use the basic buckhorn sights.





One thing I should note - Model 94s have a very long lever throw from the get-go; using pistol calibers you MUST make sure you throw that lever all the way, hard, or you'll probably create a jam.

I just got a Model 94, only it's the Sears Ted Williams Model 100. Still seems like a pretty decent rifle for $250. It has the scope mount, but no scope. My dad's 94 Win is at my sister's in Texas; she's bringing it up this summer for me. They're nice guns. Very little difference between the one made for Sears and the regular ones. I don't think I did bad for $250.

I recently purchased a 70 year old M94 in .30-30 from a friend. What a classic rifle - and sooo fun to shoot!

What does AE stand for as it pertains to these rifles?

Angle Eject. Otherwise the brass hits the scope upon ejection.

Nice one, and I think 1950 is the very last year with the longer forend in front of the front band. They were noticeably shorter after that.

I’ve got a Winchester 94 .30-30 Trapper with the (ugly & unnecessary) crossbolt safety as a truck gun. Haven’t needed it (mostly carry it in case I hit a deer) but it is a handy little carbine to have around.

I have a few Marlins and a couple of Henry's, but you guys have really got me thinking about a Winchester now. I don't need anymore 30-30's 44's, 35's or 45's, but I could maybe warm up to a 22 WMR or a 32 special.

I can't think of a gun that's any more fun to shoot than a good ole lever action rifle. Now another 32-20 in a Winchester might hit the spot too!

I swapped the wood out on mine. With the more traditional carbine stock and long forend. A Lyman tang sight and folding barrel sight were added then as well.

I love the 16" Trapper lever guns. Very handy and quick handling.
I have three. A pair of Winchester 94s in .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. And an early (pre-safety) Rossi 92 in .357 Magnum. All are great rifles.
I've had a standard 20" carbine 94 in .30-30 for many years. Never seen any need to get the Trapper version. I really think this round does better with the slightly longer barrel.

So!?? We have been waiting with baited breath? Surely we have goaded you into buying a gun you don’t need in a caliber you don’t want!?

I went back this morning.

It’s not a AE, it was manufactured in 1982.

They only realized it was a Winchester 94 and not a Marlin 336 as they were entering the transaction on their books.

After some additional haggling, they convinced me to get it: $400+tax.

I’ll try to post a photo later today.

I had a 16 inch trapper in 357 I shot 2 times...worked fine.. pie plate at 100M ..traded for 200 1964 Kennedy half.

My photography leaves a lot to be desired compared to most on the forum.

Glad you got it for a good price. I bought mine last year, a 1980 built trapper in 30-30. Wanted one for years. It’s a great little gun and packs quite a punch and kick in that caliber

I would also have that one. I have a few levers. Two in 30-30, one in .357. I think a 16-18” lever action is the cat’s pajamas.

Wow. At least $300 less than most asking, and probably gettin’ prices today. Fantastic score. Oh, by the way, I hate you!!!

My son has a couple of the ‘80’s vintage 30-30 Trappers. He discovered almost by accident that they are the perfect length to roll up inside a bedroll, whether for horse packin’ or carried on the motorcycle. So he could carry a longarm rather than just a pistol and have it well concealed and protected yet not too hard to get to. Just one more example of just how versatile these things really are.

Congrats on getting a great deal on the Trapper. These are '80 and '81 models. A peep sight is perfect for these. I wouldn't let either go for $500.

I don’t have a Win 94 Trapper but have the Marlin in 30/30. A 1895 45/70 on top with 1894 44mg under it. This rifle was made back in 60s.
