LGS has an HP in .40 for sale at $929. I have two "HPs" remaining (I had 4 at one time): one an FEG I had a real good local gunsmith do a bunch of work on and the other a Practical that's almost ANIB.

I just added .40s&w to the safe via a Beretta 96 Centurian and S&W 4006TSW CHP. I'd really like a BHP in .40 as I really like the platform. This isn't for carry or duty, just a shooter for me.

There were two real good recent threads on .40 HPs on the HP section of the 1911 Forum so I have no worries about getting one, I ain't gonna wear it out.

I do have a question about the price of this one....is it fair?

$929 is kind of steep if you ask me, especially for one without the original grips, which I've seen go for $800.

Heck, there's a guy in another thread who is considering buying a .40cal BHP which he's been offered for $500.

Hmmmph! I haven’t seen one of the new production guns with that style of hammer very often. JMHO but I’d say that price is fair, maybe a bit high, but that particular version is not common. If you want it...

Maybe look around the web and see what other .40 Hi-Powers have been going for. Also, maybe the LGS would be willing to negotiate a lower price. But given that I've seen 9mm Hi-Powers go for $1000+ after Browning announced they were discontinuing them, and that .40 Hi-Powers are pretty rare, that price doesn't seem outrageous to me, if the gun is in good shape. I'm not sure I'd buy one at that price, though.

If you can afford it & you want it then problem solved. As far as the price I don't know if it's high or not..

I picked up a BHP Practical (just like the OP except adjustable sight version) last fall for $850 out the door... but with them now out of production they have been going up at a pretty steady pace... and in case you are interested Barsto makes a 9mm conversion barrel..

The BHP is one of the few pistols that I feel was re-engineered properly for the .40.

Those are the original grips of the Practical.

I've seen them at gun shows in the $700-900 range. But they don't sell. The .40 version is a niche gun with a small following. Very few want them.

I sold one here for $850 a few months back. Polished blue & walnut grips, box and all the goodies. FWIW it sold quickly so maybe I priced it too low.

Please enlighten me as to what "original grips" it should have come with then, as mine most certainly came with "those" grips.

I recently sold one just like that for $1100, so if you want that one, I’d jump on it pretty Quick.

I have the BHP in 40. Also have a KKM 357Sig barrel for it. Love it. Someone famous once said, "He who hesitates is lost". So here is a big KITA to get you off the dime.

They go for $700-$800 if you can find one here in NM. That's the Ford version with the hard plastic grips, by the way.

Oh, by the way, TC. If all you want is a Hi-Power and don't care about it being an official Browning Hi-Power, Tisas still makes a fantastic Hi-Power clone called the Tisas Regent BR9 which goes for roughly 1/3rd the price.

The standard plastic grip panels which commonly come with BHPs, not Pachmayr rubber wraparound grips. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never seen factory new BHPs with those grips on them, nor have I seen them advertised with shch grips on Browning's website.

There's not a lot demand for BHP's in 40 caliber. If I was considering one, $750 would be my limit.

929.00 is way high for a .40 cal BHP... the cal kills the price although I have no issue with the .40 cal.

That price is "fair" for the gun. Sure, you might find it a bit cheaper if you take the time to search the country but the real question is - do you want the gun? If the answer is YES, then I say BUY IT.

Redcoat, Yes it's a bit high. BUT, it is out of production, appears to be in excellent condition, AND it is the much less common Practical model. Were I in the market, I would not hesitate.

BTW, soon after they were introduced I bought a standard .40 Hi Power. An excellent pistol. And if one wanted a really heavy duty 9MM, the .40 is an excellent platform to make that happen....

I closed the deal yesterday, I'm trading a gun I no longer shoot, that's worth about the same as the BHP (but I paid less for it a year ago) and I avoid the 10% sales tax (about $100) by doing a trade instead of a sale.

Now I gotta wait the 10 days for WA state approval and then I'll be at the range.

(And this spring/summer was for .40acp. I took delivery yesterday of a .40 S&W 4006TSW CHP. It was in beautiful shape at a very fair price and I really am excited about having one. Many thanks to the member who reached out to me about it.

Now, however, between the two there ain't no doubt I'm gonna make more muscles hefting the 4006 than lifting the BHP. That gun weighs a ton...and I have great sympathy for the CHiPs who had to carry it on a duty holster all day. Whew.)

I traded a model 4046 for a HP practical in 40 cal. several years ago. Never regretted the trade! I paid too much for the 4046, I gave too much boot to get rid of it, but I'm happy with the end result.

Top gunsmiths that work on .40 Hi-powers like to convert them into top flight +p 9mm fighting guns. They are much stronger than a standard Hi-power.

For what its worth, I just bought a NIB .40 High Power from a Forum member for $975. I thought that was a fair price...

As much as I would prefer a regular 9mm Hi-Power (if I were going to get one), I've been intrigued by the .40 Hi-Powers converted to .357Sig, like RedCardinal mentioned. I remember reading an article several years ago about a bodyguard who had a custom 9mm Hi-Power built specifically for long-range accuracy. It seems to me that a .357Sig Hi-Power would be especially well-suited for such a purpose.

I think I'm going to leave that 40 BHP just the way it is. Well, except for removing the mag safety and maybe a little attendant trigger work.

I've got enough firepower in .45acp for carry (4513, Shield, and Sig 245) and the nines I carry (CS9, PX4 compact, and HK 2000SK LEm) could probably handle +p...but I figure regular 9mm self-defense rounds are probably enough.
