More Swiss shooting
Been busy shooting here in Switzerland, while the season is still nice. End of fall and winter is all about indoor shooting.
Saturday a few friends from our shooting club and I were invited to a shooting challenge organised by the shooting society of the Lausanne police corps (Lausanne being a city in Switzerland).
5 warm up shots (2&3) and then 4 X 5 shots in 5 minutes, 50, 40 and 30 seconds on the ISSF speed target at 25 meters for a total max of 200 points (warm up shots being used in case of a tie)
My weapon of choice in the ordnance division is my trusty Sig P210-1 in 7.65 mm parabellum (.30 Luger). Note the vintage ammo, still accurate.
2 warm up shots, great
3 warm up shots, still ok
Time to load up for the scoring shots
1st pass, ouch
2nd pass, better
3rd pass, agonisingly missing the 10
Last pass, finally a nice one
Total score of 181 (the secretary struggles with additions)
Yesterday I went to another nice shooting range for some rifle and pistol practice
300 meters open sights with a milsurp Sig 510-1 (StGw 90). EDIT 550-1, not 510-1
I am on lane 7, they closed one out of two lanes for social distancing / Covid
The contraption on the side is a brass deflector
A couple of 80/100
Then I fiddled with sight adjustment a bit
And finally turned in a decent score despite a 6 and a 7
Finally some 25 meters pistol practice next door
CZ 75
I’ve been struggling a bit with this pistol so I asked the gunsmith to improve the trigger a bit, he deburred some parts and it improved it quite a bit.
Sig P220 (ex Lausanne police)
Colt Mk IV 9mm Luger
Milsurp Waffenfabrik Parabellum 06/29
Milsurp Sig P49 (210-2)

The slashes are the cuts to insert a fresh center replacement on the target*.

Right on Kurusu, the last set of pictures / targets show a rubber band, same principle (although I managed to shoot the rubber band twice yesterday).
And thanks, but I didn’t shoot many competitions in my 30 + years career as a leisure shooter, and I regret it now, as the pressure of competition makes one a better shooter I believe, makes you focus more when there is a score and/or a position on the line.
Oh well not too late to learn and improve, most importantly I am enjoying myself tremendously

You should demand bonus points for shooting the rubber band. It's a very challenging target.

Tried that, all I got from the range officer was “dump it on that pile of broken targets, I’ll fix it later”

Understandable. Most of my shooting practice is self-defense oriented, so instead of changing targets I'll just tape a 8.5x11" sheet of paper over it, or a 3x5" adhesive mailing label if I want to shoot something smaller. For more precise work, sharpies make a good X on white paper.

When training I just use paint masking tape to cover the holes.

From an early age I was taught “Waste not — Want not.”
So to conserve on tape, targets and felt tip markers . . . I make sure to put all my shots through a single hole.

It's more fun to say you shoot at repair centers because that's the only part of the target you use.

We had a Swiss pistol match here last week. I qualified for both medals, shooting a Swiss & Wesson 686.

My buddy, who holds dual Swiss and USA citizenship, ha invited me to an event held by the local Swiss Rifle Club. The point of the event is to shoot some of the same rifles that Swiss citizens keep in their homes as part of their universal military service. I have no idea what rifles those are, but I guess I will find out. For ten bucks plus ammo, there is a shooting match at the end of the event. Should be fun.

The Swiss only used 3 (or 4) infantry rifles in the last 100 years +
K11 / K31 with GP 11 ammo (7.5 X 55)
Sig 510-1 (assault rifle 57) with GP 11 ammo (7.5 X 55)
Sig 550-1 (assault rifle 90) with GP 90 ammo (5.56 NATO)
All the two digits military numbers being the years of introduction
I am sure you’ll have fun, especially if they shoot 300 meters open sights

That pair of older rifles was the first thing I saw, mounted on the wall opposite the front entrance door, at the first Swiss home I entered.
My friend the homeowner was a widow, and she had prominently mounted her late husband's rifles because he had been so proud of his military service.

Very impressive shooting and shooting facilities. Are all the firearms pictured owned by you or are they "club" weapons?

Those are my weapons. Those ranges / club do not have weapons, everyone brings his own.
Commercial ranges have rentals.

I have a SIG P210-6. Very nice gun; my wife loves it even for than me, but it has one problem, the rear tang is much too short and I get severe hammer bite. There is a solution; a tang extension is made the the P210 that nicely eliminates the problem.

Nice. I'd love digital target displays like that. It's tiresome walking the length of the range with targets and clothes pins on a hot summer day.

And some 25 m shooting with a few Sig P210
This is a 210-4 from the German border protection, made in the early 50ies (52 maybe) with Sig wooden sports grips
A Swiss milsurp 210-2 which I had hard chromed
And a first year delivery 210-1 from 1949

I was going to mention my two Swiss k31’s. Awesome straight bolts. I have the gp11 ammo to go with them. The Swiss recommend lubing the bolt cams with moly.

A lot of nice shooting going on there.
Here in Reno, when I think of Swiss, I think of the post #17 rifle
that is used by several shooters in the stock events...... at the metal targets that some of us shoot, at our meets.
This rifle looks weird, but they sure can shoot.

I love my two W+F Parabellums
06/24 from 1923
06/29 from 1934
But in the meantime, I missed a very nice 1917 DWM Luger for $ 1400 (sold hours after it was advertised), still kicking myself (until i get a chance to kick the LGS).

Too bad about the missed 1917 P.08. Looks like a good one.
But, as a shooter, I do prefer the Mausers from the 30s and 40s, they are younger, and I shoot a lot. my P.08 from 1915 almost never goes to the range.

Nice toys across the pond you have. I have a Swiss k31 straight pull bolt rifle. I managed to get some match quality GP-11 7.5mm ammo for it, sweet action. I waited many decades to get a 9 mm pistol. I chose a CZ85db it’s amberdexterious cz75, another sweet gun.
Congrats you have a nice selection of shooters.

I’m surprised you don’t have a Swedish lathi m40 in 9 mm luger or a Swede 6,5 mm Mauser. The Finnish mosins, the Swiss k31, the Swede Mauser are suppose to be tops in the surplus market. I don’t know how much is available there gun wise. I picked up a Swede Husqvarna m40/9 mm and it’s heavy.
For the ones who never seen or heard of the Swedish m40,

Well I can’t have them all. So far I’ve not been particularly attracted to the Lahti or the Husqvarna, or even the Vis Radom. And a lot of my acquisitions were opportunistic and impulse buy.

I did some "Swiss" shooting myself yesterday. I went to the range to test and sight some guns in and the last one I shot was a Sphinx AS2000. The first shot at 10 yards went high and I adjusted the rear sights until I was on target. The results encouraged me to bring the target out to 15 yards and despite the 115gr Geco red box ammo, the five shot offhand group was pretty good.
It makes me wonder why the OP does not have one of those very well made early Swiss Sphinx pistols. The trigger is as excellent as in my P210-6 and I honestly had not thought that possible with the CZ75 platform.

Looking for some range work with revolvers, they are my favorites. Very nice hardware. I have a K31 that I enjoy a lot. It’s too cold here to shoot now but I do have access to a couple of indoor pistol ranges. Great photos

Well more like shooting US guns this time
Indoor range 25 m pistols and 50 m rifle
I put fresh springs in the three USGI pistols. I won’t shoot them much but I had to make sure they function well and go bang
Colt 1911 (1913)
This one was hard work, the trigger breaks at 10 lbs
Colt 1911A1 (1943)
Remington Rand 1911A1 (1943)
ArmaLite AR-10 (1958)
Springfield Armory M1A (2011)
And some rapid fire at 50 m
First time firing this new to me rifle, worked flawlessly with 3 different brands of ammo, and felt great. The mass of the rifle absorbs the recoil nicely, especially compared to the light AR-10 which kicks noticeably more

Nice toys to play with. Is it true there it’s the law that every Swiss citizen is a trained marksman and owns a gun in every household? They can all shoot accurately.

No, none of that is true, though conscription means that the majority of males get military training and service, with the opportunity to buy their service weapon at the end of service.
What I found when living there, is that the Swiss believe in expertise at what they do, and extensive training, so I'd bet that good shooting skills are common in the sport's participants there.

30 years ago it was very difficult to avoid military service and the Swiss army was supposedly able to mobilise 600’000 men within 48 hours (in a country of 6 million people back then). Nowadays and with the end of the Cold War, the army was reduced to 150’000 men.
Marksmanship depends a lot of each individual’s ambition and I have a lot of friends who were in the army (since it was compulsory) but who have no interest in guns or shooting.
Nevertheless it is still a very popular sport or hobby so I’d guess that we have a good number of capable shooters.
Also in the past in was very natural to keep the rifle or pistol at the end of the service, so attics are filled with K11/K31 and Stgw 57 and 90 as well as Swiss Lugers, P49 (Sig P210) and P75 (Sig P220). But the new generation is less interested and many leave the weapon with the army now.
